Guy Ritchie has exited as the director of "Road House 2."

It's not yet clear why Ritchie has parted ways with the Amazon MGM project, which sees Jake Gyllenhaal reprising his lead role as Dalton. The film is set to begin production this September.

Will Beall ("Bad Boys: Ride or Die," "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F") is writing the script for "Road House 2." Plot details remain under wraps. Producers include Atlas Entertainment's Charles Roven and Alex Gartner, as well as Gyllenhaal for his Nine Stories Productions with Josh McLaughlin. The cast was shaping up to include new faces like Dave Bautista, but it's unclear if the directorial shake-up will affect the call sheet.

2024's "Road House," a reboot of the 1989 classic starring Patrick Swayze, followed Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter struggling to get by. He takes up work as the bouncer of a Florida Keys bar, finding himself roped into a war of outlaws, bikers and a developer determined to build a lavish resort for the ultra-rich.

The movie was viewed as a success for Amazon MGM and the studio announced a sequel was in development last summer during its inaugural Upfronts presentation. The film launched on Prime Video last March and broke records for the streamer — attracting nearly 80 million worldwide viewers in its first eight weeks to become the studio's "most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis," per then-studio chief Jennifer Salke.

Director Doug Liman expressed frustration over the streaming release of the 2024 "Road House" movie. Last year, he told IndieWire that his discontent stemmed from not being properly compensated as "Road House" was initially conceived as a theatrical release for MGM, but distribution changed when MGM was acquired by Amazon. Amazon previously indicated the film was greenlit for streaming.

Ritchie's directorial credits include "Aladdin" (2019), "The Gentlemen," "MobLand" and, most recently, "Fountain of Youth." He has collaborated with Gyllenhaal on "Guy Ritchie's The Covenant" (also at Amazon MGM) and the forthcoming action thriller "In the Grey." He's next set to helm the black comedy "Wife & Dog" starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike and Anthony Hopkins.
