White wandered over to the billboard very soon after it was unveiled, where he had a "very beautiful, private moment" with himself

"And before the whole world got, you know—" White began, and Fallon cut in, "—their private moments with you"

Jeremy Allen White is (like the rest of us) cherishing his Calvin Klein campaign!

The Bear actor, 34, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, June 26, and opened up about his recent ad for Calvin Klein. For the campaign, White posed in the brand's underwear and baggy jeans, reclining shirtless on a couch.

According to Fallon, the campaign "broke the internet."

Mert Alas

Jeremy Allen White for Calvin Klein.

Fallon then produced a snap of one of the campaign's Houston Street billboards, which saw a black-and-white shot of White, again shirtless and sporting white Calvin Klein briefs.

White grew up in Brooklyn, and watched a rotating stream of Calvin Klein models grace that billboard his whole life. Before White's ad reached the internet or social media, he checked it out with his childhood friend Gabriel Gomez.

"It was fresh up for maybe like 30 minutes or an hour," White recalled. "And it was like this very beautiful, private moment I had with myself."

"And before the whole world got, you know—" White began, and Fallon cut in, "—their private moments with you," and the audience giggled.

Fallon then revealed his own Calvin Klein ad, made during his stint on Saturday Night Live — complete with the dramatic stare into the camera, the lounging poses, a questionable explosion in the background and the CK logo. The only thing missing, Fallon pointed out, was actual Calvin Klein underwear.

The Bear recently debuted its fourth season on Wednesday, June 25.

Fireworks will light up this Fourth of July. Next year could be different if tariff talks fizzle

-

 • Fireworks will light up this Fourth of July. Next year could be different if tariff talks fizzle

SUSAN MONTOYA BRYAN June 28, 2025 at 12:04 AM

FILE - Fireworks burst above the National Mall and, from left, the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol building, during Independence Day celebrations in Washington on July 4, 2023. (AP Photo/Stephanie Scarbrough, File)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Like clockwork, Carla Johnson sends out letters every spring asking for donations to help pay for the annual Fourth of July fireworks show that draws tens of thousands of people to New Mexico's largest lake.

And she has no reservations about doling out verbal reminders when she sees her patrons around town. There's too much at stake to be shy about fundraising when donations collected by Friends of Elephant Butte Lake State Park are what make the tradition possible.

But even Johnson's ardent efforts as the group's fundraiser might not cut it next year if the U.S. and China remain locked in a trade war.

With nearly all of the aerial shells, paper rockets and sparkly fountains that fuel America's Fourth of July celebrations being imported from China, volunteer groups like Johnson's and cities big and small have been closely watching the negotiations.

A 90-day pause on what had been massive tariffs brought some temporary relief, but industry experts acknowledge that the tiff has lit a fuse of uncertainty as the price tag for future fireworks displays could skyrocket if an agreement isn't reached.

Not the first time

There were similar concerns in 2019 as trade talks between the U.S. and China dragged on. Industry groups had called on officials then to exempt fireworks from escalating tariffs.

The American Pyrotechnics Association and the National Fireworks Association reignited the lobbying effort this spring, noting in letters to President Donald Trump that fireworks play a crucial role in American celebrations. The groups say the industry is made up mostly of family-owned companies that are often locked into long-term contracts that leave them unable to raise prices to offset cost surges brought on by higher tariffs.

And there are few options for sourcing the more than 300 million pounds (136 million kilograms) of fireworks needed to feed demands. China produces 99% of consumer fireworks and 90% of professional display fireworks used in the U.S., according to the APA.

"I think overall it's the uncertainty," said Julie Heckman, the APA's executive director. "Yeah, we have a 90-day pause, but are the negotiations with China going to go well? Or is it going to go sky-high again? You know, triple digits. It's very hard for a small business to plan."

How it began

Fireworks have their roots in China. To ward off evil spirits, people would throw bamboo stalks into a fire, causing them to pop as the air inside the hollow pockets heated up. These early firecrackers evolved into more sophisticated fireworks after the Chinese developed gunpowder in the 9th century.

By the 15th century, Europe was using fireworks for religious festivals and entertainment. In 1777, they were used in Philadelphia and Boston for what were the first organized Independence Day celebrations.

Now, fireworks are synonymous with the summer holiday and with ringing in the new year. Shows have become elaborately choreographed displays that are often synced to live music. In Nashville, the Music City's award-winning symphony orchestra puts its own spin on the festivities.

In New York City, organizers of the Macy's show will fire off 80,000 shells, with some reaching heights of 1,000 feet (304 meters). The National Park Service promises a spectacular show on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

At Elephant Butte in southern New Mexico, they're going old school and will light the fireworks by hand. Charlie Warren, vice president of the Friends of Elephant Butte Lake State Park, said it's like spectators are getting two shows at once as the colors reflect on the water below and the loud booms reverberate off the lake.

Johnson, who also serves as the group's treasurer, gets emotional describing the experience.

"Oh man, in my heart and sometimes out loud, I'm singing the Star-Spangled Banner. I'll sing it out loud to the top of my lungs when I watch that show," she said. "It makes you proud to be in this country, and we're celebrating our freedom, and I'm going to start crying now. Don't get me started."

Stocking up before the tariffs

Organizers in Nashville ordered fireworks for that show over a year ago so they weren't affected by the tariffs. It was the same in one of New Mexico's largest cities, where Rio Rancho officials planned to spend a little more to go bigger and higher this year.

In Oklahoma, Big Blast Fireworks supplies nonprofit groups so they can fundraise by setting up fireworks stands. The company received its first container from China in January before the tariffs hit. The second container arrived in February and was subject to a 10% tariff. The third container was put on hold to avoid the highest tariffs, meaning inventory could be tight later this year if nothing changes.

"As a small business, we are passionate about watching our price points and intentional about passing along as much savings on to customers as possible," said Melissa Torkleson, a managing partner at Big Blast.

With some orders on hold, industry experts say Chinese manufacturers throttled back production as warehouses filled up. The backup in the supply chain also has resulted in competition for shipping space aboard ocean vessels, and Heckman, the APA's director, said it will take much more than flipping a light switch to ease either situation.

If the trade war drags on, she said, there are ways that show organizers can adjust and spectators might not notice. A minute or two could be shaved from a show or certain types of fireworks could be substituted with less expensive options.

As for this year, Warren said the price tag for the Elephant Butte show was unchanged and he and Johnson can't wait to see spectators lining the shoreline, on the surrounding hillsides and on boats bobbing on the lake. The mission every year is to make sure "that the T's are all crossed," Warren said.

"Because this community would not be happy if this show didn't come off," he said.

Protesters gather in Bangkok to demand Thai prime minister's resignation over leaked Cambodia call

BANGKOK (AP) — Hundreds of protesters gathered in Thailand's capital on Saturday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, part of the brewing political turmoil set off by a leaked phone call with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Paetongtarn faces growing dissatisfaction over her handling of a recent border dispute with Cambodia involving an armed confrontation May 28. One Cambodian soldier was killed in a relatively small, contested area. The clash set off a string of investigations that could lead to her removal.

Protesters held national flags and signs as they occupied parts of the streets around the Victory Monument in central Bangkok. A huge stage was set up at the foot of the monument as participants sat and listened to speakers who said they gathered to express their love of the country following the intensified border row.

Many of the leading figures in the protest were familiar faces who were part of a group popularly known as Yellow Shirts, whose clothing color indicates loyalty to the Thai monarchy. They are longtime foes of Paetongtarn's father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Their rallies at times turned violent and led to military coups in 2006 and 2014, which respectively ousted the elected governments of Thaksin and Paetongtarn's aunt, former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Outrage over the recorded phone call mostly revolved around Paetongtarn telling Hun Sen, the current Cambodian Senate president and a longtime friend of her father, not to listen to "an opponent" in Thailand. It's believed to be a reference to the regional Thai army commander in charge of the area where the clash happened, who publicly criticized Cambodia over the border dispute.

Hun Sen on Saturday vowed to protect his country's territory from foreign invaders and condemned what he called an attack by Thai forces last month.

At a 74th anniversary celebration of the foundation of his long-ruling Cambodian People's Party, Hun Sen claimed the action by the Thai army was illegal when it engaged Cambodian forces. He said the skirmish inside Cambodian territory was a serious violation of country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, despite Cambodia's good will in attempting to resolve the border issue.

"This poor Cambodia has suffered from foreign invasion, war, and genocide, been surrounded and isolated and insulted in the past but now Cambodia has risen on an equal face with other countries. We need peace, friendship, cooperation, and development the most, and we have no politics and no unfriendly stance with any nation," Hun Sen said in front of cheerful thousands of party members at the event in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh.

There is a long history of territorial disputes between the countries. Thailand is still rattled by a 1962 International Court of Justice ruling that awarded Cambodia the disputed territory where the historic Preah Vihear temple stands. There were sporadic though serious clashes there in 2011. The ruling from the U.N. court was reaffirmed in 2013, when Yingluck was prime minister.

The scandal has broken Paetongtarn's fragile coalition government, costing her Pheu Thai Party the loss of its biggest partner, Bhumjaithai Party. There already was a rift between Bhumjaithai and Pheu Thai Party over reports Bhumjaithai would be shuffled out of the powerful Interior Ministry.

Several Bhumjaithai leaders also are under investigation over an alleged rigging of last year's Senate election in which many figures who are reportedly close to the party claimed a majority of seats.

The departure of Bhumjaithai left the 10-party coalition with 255 seats, just above the majority of the 500-seat house.

Paetongtarn also faces investigations by the Constitutional Court and the national anti-corruption agency. Their decisions could lead to her removal from office.

Sarote Phuengrampan, secretary-general of the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, said Wednesday that his agency is investigating Paetongtarn for a serious breach of ethics over the phone call with Hun Sen. He did not give a possible timeline for a decision.

Reports said the Constitutional Court can suspend Paetongtarn from duty pending the investigation and could decide as early as next week whether it will take the case. The prime minister said Tuesday she is not worried and is ready to give evidence to support her case.

"It was clear from the phone call that I had nothing to gain from it, and I also didn't cause any damage to the country," she said.

The court last year removed her predecessor from Pheu Thai over a breach of ethics. Thailand's courts, especially the Constitutional Court, are considered a bulwark of the country's royalist establishment, which has used them and nominally independent state agencies such as the Election Commission to cripple or sink political opponents.

Investigation into Florida condo collapse is expected to finish in 2026

CURT ANDERSONJune 28, 2025 at 12:05 AM

1 / 3Building Collapse Miami Things To KnowFILE - A giant tarp, bottom, covers a section of rubble at the Champlain Towers South condo building, July 4, 2021, in Surfside, Fla. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky, File)

More than four years after a Florida condominium collapse killed 98 people, federal investigators have yet to make a final determination of the cause — but they do have some leading theories.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology, the agency handling the probe, said this week it hopes to conclude the investigation in 2026.

"We intend for our investigation of this failure to have a lasting impact, save future lives and ensure this never happens again," NIST investigator Judith Mitrani-Reiser said in the agency's latest report.

Most residents were asleep in the 12-story Champlain Towers South when the beachfront condo building in Surfside, Florida, collapsed into a huge pile of rubble at 1:22 a.m. on June 24, 2021. As the investigation continued, a Miami judge approved a more than $1 billion settlement for personal injury and wrongful death claims from the disaster.

Meanwhile, a new luxury condominium is going up at the Champlain Towers site, a few miles north of Miami.

What caused the collapse?

NIST has zeroed in on what it calls three "higher-likelihood" scenarios, all related to construction flaws that date to the beginning of the 40-year-old structure.

"These conditions existed from the time construction was complete, 40 years before the partial collapse," said Glen Bell, co-lead investigator on NIST's National Construction Safety Team.

One possibility is the failure of a connection between a building column and the pool deck slab that never met building code standards. Another is that steel reinforcement "was not placed where it should have been," which meant the column and pool deck were far too weak.

And a third theory is that work done later around the pool — when heavy planters, sand and pavers were added — increased the weight load on a deck "that was already functionally and structurally inadequate."

The NIST report also notes that support columns in the building's basement parking garage had been exposed to frequent flooding, which causes corrosion in steel reinforcements and concrete deterioration.

Are there other theories?

Investigators did not find evidence of voids in the ground under the building, known as "karst." Using satellite data, the NIST team found there was no sinking or settling underneath Champlain Towers, which would indicate existence of karst.

In addition, investigators found the limestone upon which the condo was built was "sufficient to carry the building loads" and that testing of the concrete supporting Champlain Towers had "adequate material strength."

One challenge for investigators was the lack of any available records from the original building construction and not many from its earlier years.

How are other condo buildings handling new rules?

After Surfside, state legislators enacted a law in 2022 requiring condo associations to have sufficient reserves to cover major repairs. Some residents were caught off guard by hefty fees imposed to cover years of deferred maintenance expenses required to bring their buildings into compliance with the law's standards.

Gov. Ron DeSantis this week signed new legislation allowing some condo associations to fund their reserves through a loan or line of credit. It also gives residents more flexibility to pause payments into reserve funds while they prioritize needed repairs. It extends the deadline for condo associations to complete structural integrity studies and exempts some smaller buildings from those studies.

"Now it's time to make the change," state Sen. Ed Hooper said. "Elderly people are losing their condos because they could not afford to make the increase in their monthly HOA fees. That's just wrong."

What is being built on the site?

It's a luxury condo building, dubbed the Delmore, with 37 "mansions in the sky" and a starting price of $15 million. The site was purchased at auction by Dubai-based DAMAC International for $120 million.

According to the company, there will be amenities such as a see-through swimming pool, an indoor pool, an outdoor kitchen, a fitness center and a meditation garden.

The new condo is expected to be completed by 2029.

Will there be a memorial to the victims?

A design for a memorial to the 98 victims and that honors their families was approved earlier this year by Surfside officials and a family committee. But the city's planning and zoning board objected to its appearance and recommended that alternatives be considered.

The existing proposal envisions a tall "wall of water" and exhibition of materials from the collapsed building. Surfside officials say they want to keep the project on track but will consider additional input, especially from the family committee.

"I understand the urgency. But this memorial is going to be here long beyond anyone in this room," said planning board chair Lindsay Lecour at an April city commission meeting.

(Alex Kormann/Star Tribune via AP)

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris will join the mourners Saturday at the funeral for former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, who was killed in a pair of attacks that authorities have called an assassination and that also left her husband dead and a state senator and his wife seriously wounded.

Biden also paid his respects Friday as Hortman, her husband, Mark, and their golden retriever, Gilbert, lay in state in the Minnesota Capitol rotunda in St. Paul, a few hours after the man charged with killing them while disguised as a police officer June 14 made a brief court appearance in a suicide prevention suit.

The service

The couple's private funeral, at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis, is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday. It will be livestreamed on the Department of Public Safety's YouTube channel.

Neither Biden nor Harris is expected to speak. Harris expressed her condolences earlier this week to Hortman's adult children, and spoke with Gov. Tim Walz, her running mate on the 2024 Democratic presidential ticket, who extended an invitation on behalf of the Hortman family, her office said.

The scene at the Capitol

Hortman, a Democrat, was the first woman and one of fewer than 20 Minnesotans to lay in state at the Capitol. It was the first time a couple has been accorded the honor, and the first for a dog. Gilbert was seriously wounded in the attack and had to be euthanized. The Hortmans' caskets and the dog's urn were arranged in the center of the rotunda, under the Capitol dome, with law enforcement officers keeping watch as thousands of people filed by. Many fought back tears as they left.

Among the first to pay their respects were Walz, who has called Hortman his closest political ally, and his wife, Gwen. Biden, a Catholic, visited later in the afternoon, walking up to the velvet rope in front of the caskets, making the sign of the cross and spending a few moments by himself in silence. He then took a knee briefly, got up, made the sign of the cross again and walked off to greet people waiting in the wings of the rotunda.

Lisa Greene, who lives in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Park like Hortman did, but in a different House district, said she came to the Capitol because she had so much respect for the former speaker.

"She was just amazing. Amazing woman. And I was just so proud that she represented the city that I lived in," Greene said in a voice choked with emotion. "She was such a leader. She could bring people together. She was so accessible. I mean, she was friendly, you could talk to her."

But, she went on to say admiringly, Hortman was also "a boss."

"She just knew what she was doing and she could just make things happen," she said.

A hearing takes a twist

The man accused of killing the Hortmans at their home and wounding Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, at their home in nearby Champlin, made a short court appearance Friday for what the acting U.S. attorney for Minnesota, Joseph Thompson, has called "a political assassination."

Vance Boelter, 57, of Green Isle, surrendered near his home the night of June 15 after what authorities called the largest search in Minnesota history.

An unshaven Boelter was brought in wearing just a green padded suicide prevention suit and orange slippers. Federal defender Manny Atwal asked Magistrate Judge Douglas Micko to continue the hearing until Thursday. He agreed. She said Boelter has been sleep deprived while on suicide watch in the Sherburne County Jail, and that it has been difficult to communicate with him as a result.

"Your honor, I haven't really slept in about 12 to 14 days," Boelter told the judge. And he denied being suicidal. "I've never been suicidal and I am not suicidal now."

Atwal told the court that Boelter had been in what's known as a "Gumby suit," without undergarments, ever since his transfer to the jail after his first court appearance on June 16. She said the lights are on in his area 24 hours a day, doors slam frequently, the inmate in the next cell spreads feces on the walls and the smell drifts to Boelter's cell.

The attorney said transferring him to segregation instead, and giving him a normal jail uniform, would let him get some sleep, restore some dignity and let him communicate better.

The case continues

Boelter did not enter a plea. Prosecutors need to secure a grand jury indictment first. According to the federal complaint, police video shows Boelter outside the Hortmans' home and captures the sound of gunfire. And it says security video shows Boelter approaching the front doors of two other lawmakers' homes.

His lawyers have declined to comment on the charges, which could carry the federal death penalty. Thompson said last week that no decision has been made. Minnesota abolished its death penalty in 1911. Boelter also faces separate murder and attempted murder charges in state court that could carry life without parole.

Friends have described Boelter as an evangelical Christian with politically conservative views. But prosecutors have declined so far to speculate on a motive.

Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk appeared on Fox News Friday to discuss what he says is the "biggest fight" President Donald Trump will face in his second term.

During an appearance on "Jesse Watters Primetime," Kirk said that the Democrats' primary methods of resistance have relied heavily on lawsuits and injunctions. Kirk predicted the final battle will be waged through bureaucratic resistance from within the very structures of the federal government.

"The last remnant of Democrat resistance will be the administrative state. So the first kind of vanguard was these lawsuits and the injunctions using Article III. The last remaining one is the administrative state or the deep state," Kirk told Watters. "They're going to try leaks. And we saw that this week, Jesse. It's very important. They're going to try to leak on everything President Trump does."

The FBI is investigating a leaked Defense Intelligence Agency report to CNN that assessed the impact of President Trump's strikes on Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth criticized media coverage of the leak and said it misrepresented the operation's success by suggesting the strikes failed to fully destroy Iran's nuclear program.

Kirk warned that this resistance will manifest through a variety of tactics, some of which are already underway.

"President Trump has to be careful. Are they listening to your phone call? Are they recording you secretly? I don't want to try to introduce paranoia, but they are going to be very desperate after this decision from the Supreme Court," Kirk said. "They're going to have defiance. They're going to walk off the job, and they're also going to do something more subtle. They're going to try to slow walk the bureaucracy. They are masters at this. They try to run out the clock."

Kirk said that these bureaucratic delays are not accidental but rather a strategic effort to stall Trump's agenda.

"You want an executive order on this thing on the border? We'll get to it next decade. You see the bureaucracy. They are experts at trying to delay and trying to slow down. President Trump, he is going at Trump time," Kirk added. "He's going at high velocity and high speed. And so the last fight, the biggest fight of this entire presidency, which will determine whether or not we the people are in charge or whether or not an unelected shadow government in charge is that against the fourth branch of government."

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to limit the ability of lower courts to issue nationwide injunctions blocking Trump administration policies. Justice Amy Coney Barrett said that district courts had exceeded their authority by issuing universal injunctions, which likely surpassed the power granted to federal courts by Congress.
Several prominent Democrats, including House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have opposed nationwide injunctions in the past. Since President Trump's return to office, however, these same leaders are rallying behind the use of nationwide injunctions and leveraging them as a legal tool to block policies from the Trump administration they view as harmful.
