All eyes were on Bill Belichick and North Carolina football as the first-year head coach made his college coaching debut against TCU.

The Horned Frogs quickly spoiled what was supposed to a celebratory game for Belichick, as the oldest coach in college football kicked off a new chapter of his illustrious coaching career. Coach Sonny Dykes and TCU defeated North Carolina 48-14 on Monday, Sept. 1, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

"I think we all felt a little disrespected, maybe, coming in. There was a lot of conversation and none of it was about us. I think we all were highly motivated. Our players were certainly excited to play."TCU coach Sonny Dykes after TCU's 48-14 beatdown of North Carolina. pic.twitter.com/KE43WKBzbg

Dykes, who led the Horned Frogs to the national championship game in 2022 in his first season with the program, said TCU felt disrespected due to the national attention surronding North Carolina leading up to the Week 1 matchup.

"I think we all felt a little disrespected, maybe, coming in," Dykes told ESPN's Holly Rowe after the game. "There was a lot of conversation and none of it was about us. So, I think we're all highly motivated, our players are certainly excited to play.

"Thought we did a great job of – North Carolina came out and executed really well on the first drive, we got down early and it looked great for us. Our guys just hung in there and we really prepared well. Really proud of our guys, they put a lot of work in and it showed up today. "

The Horned Frogs won six of their final seven games to end the season in 2024, and kicked off the 2025 season with a big season-opening win over North Carolina, showing they might just be among the top contenders for a wide-open Big 12 championship.

TCU returns third-year starter Josh Hoover, who's one of the most underrated quarterbacks in college football after passing for 3,949 yards with 27 touchdowns to 11 interceptions last season. The Horned Frogs also deployed a strong rushing attack against the Tar Heels, taking 35 carries as a team for 258 yards with two touchdowns.

Kevorian Barnes led the way on the ground with 11 rushes for 113 yards and a score against North Carolina. Hoover passed for 284 yards with two touchdowns to an interception in his first start of the season.

The Horned Frogs certainly had some fun with the win, given their perceived disrespect they felt, which was made evident by Dykes comments.

TCU even reposted a clip on X of Belichick and North Carolina's first episode of their upcoming Hulu docuseries similar to "Hard Knocks," making quite the joke after its huge win.

"When does episode one come out?" the Horned Frogs' X account wrote.

LONDON (AP) — England coach Thomas Tuchel has added Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jarell Quansah to his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.

AC Milan's Loftus-Cheek and Bayer Leverkusen's Quansah have been included after Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton pulled out because of injury.

Midfielder Loftus-Cheek has not played for England since November 2018 and has 10 caps.

Defender Quansah is still to play for his national team, despite being included in senior squads.

England plays Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday and travels to Belgrade to play Serbia the following Tuesday.

Preseason? Done. Training camp? Done. Fantasy football drafts? Done ... or finishing this week, if you prefer living on the edge. Between free agency, the NFL Draft, months of beat reports and dozens of preseason "highlights," the final "values" for every player have been set. But some of them moved quite a bit over the summer, and some expectations are much higher now than they were the last time you checked.

So here is a fantasy stock report on the most noteworthy hype trains of the 2025 offseason — a precursor to the weekly column I'll be writing here at Yahoo every Tuesday throughout the season! Are we all aboard ... or proceeding with caution? Enjoy, and good luck in the 2025 fantasy season!

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

Honorable Mentions

Before we get to the true hype machines of the summer, there's a hefty list of late risers worth flagging for early-season waiver wires. These players went undrafted in most leagues, so if you've got room on the bench — or if you can make room — consider tucking one away. Ollie Gordon II (Dolphins), Woody Marks (Texans) and Dylan Sampson (Browns) are three intriguing rookie running backs on unhealthy, unsettled depth charts. The way things are trending now, all three should be in the mix for early-season work and could play themselves into fantasy relevance out the gate. Speaking of rookies, wideouts Isaac TeSlaa (Lions) and Dont'e Thornton Jr. (Raiders) have been the darlings of the "diehard" fantasy community recently. With impressive preseasons and absurd athletic profiles, both receivers are packing sneaky upside if they can earn significant targets.

On the flip side, "Ol' Reliable" Keenan Allen has been a sudden late riser after signing back with the Chargers in early August — he has an established rapport with Justin Herbert and will likely join Ladd McConkey at the top of the target pecking order in Los Angeles. And if you're looking for a tight end to stash, Chig Okonkwo is one of the biggest risers of the last couple weeks, as something of a post-hype sleeper. He's reportedly found chemistry with rookie QB Cam Ward and could very easily be the No. 2 option in this offense behind only Calvin Ridley.

Spoiler alert: I've snuck extra names into almost all of these top "five" but they're thematic! (Please don't snitch to my editors).

5. TreVeyon Henderson & Omarion Hampton, Patriots & Chargers, RBs

Our first duo features the rookie running backs who cracked the top-four rounds of drafts by the end of August. Omarion Hampton was there a little longer, following his first-round NFL draft selection and Najee Harris's infamous July 4th eye incident. The reports around Harris's recovery have remained oddly blurry, and Hampton settled into the third round as a result. Meanwhile, TreVeyon Henderson saw a major August spike thanks to flashy performances in the preseason and unending positive reports out of camp. He climbed from the 5-6 turn at the start of August into the fourth round by the end of it ... and often sneaks into the third in sharper leagues.

I'm buying heavily into the hype on both rookies and would not be surprised to see both in fantasy RB1 territory by midseason. Hampton profiles as the lead back — and the far more explosive option — in Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman's offense. That's fantasy gold regardless of draft capital, but the front office also spent the 22nd overall pick on this kid less than five months ago. He's going to eat.

As for Henderson, he was picked half a round after Hampton, but is even more dynamic and versatile. His only roadblocks to stardom are the "healthy" Rhamondre Stevenson and the trustworthiness of the Patriots offense. The drumbeat out of New England suggests Henderson is already surpassing the veteran back as the team's RB1, and I expect the offense to improve with returning OC Josh McDaniels, Year 2 Drake Maye, a quietly healthy Stefon Diggs and Henderson himself leading the charge. And if either of these running backs starts the season slow — not uncommon for rookies — be ready to send out trade offers. They're going to hit big sooner rather than later.

4. Emeka Egbuka & Matthew Golden, Buccaneers & Packers, WRs

While they're not going quite as early as Hampton and Henderson, rookie wideouts Emeka Egbuka and Matthew Golden have seen similar hype over the last month. Both have risen quickly on their own depth charts amid strong showings and injuries around them. When the Buccaneers drafted Egbuka 19th overall, it looked like he might start his career buried behind Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and late-2024 breakout Jalen McMillan. But with Godwin likely to miss a month or more battling to return from multiple ankle surgeries, and McMillan out for the foreseeable future with a preseason neck injury, things have changed. Egbuka will now be starting alongside Mike Evans — who's 32 years old and might have lost a step or two last season — and could start the year well ahead of the WR3 price tag he reached in ADP. Over in Green Bay, Golden has essentially become the de facto No. 1 for Jordan Love with Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks and Christian Watson all dealing with injuries over the past month. The Packers drafted Golden in the first round to eventually fill this role, but the speed and security with which he's stepped into it has been impressive.

"Buying into" the hype for this receiver duo takes a little less than it does for Hampton and Henderson — the RBs went 4-5 rounds earlier in drafts. And their upside as overall fantasy players is likely more capped — both Egbuka and Golden could feasibly be high-end WR2s, but are unlikely to crack WR1 territory. Still, even after the rising multiple rounds through the summer, they ended up in low-WR3 to high-WR4 range. Between the draft capital, evident talent and open opportunity in promising offenses, that's hype worth buying into. While they won't crack every starting lineup to open the season, expect to see both in FLEX spots as early as Week 2.

3. Tyler Warren, Colts, TE

Warren cracked the final list of biggest ADP risers in our weekly column after rising 2-3 rounds in August. And it's not hard to see why. As a prospect, Warren combined Rob Gronkowski size and athleticism with Brock Bowers' production, and it landed him at the 14th overall draft pick to Indianapolis. Then Warren's biggest roadblock to an early breakout was removed when the Colts named Daniel Jones the starter over Anthony Richardson Sr. While Jones is no Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes, he completes 15% more of his passes than Richardson and has a better chance of supporting a fantasy-relevant tight end.

Still, while Jones is better than Richardson, that's not a particularly high bar and doesn't guarantee success for his pass-catchers. Evan Engram was Jones' tight end for three seasons in New York and was rarely startable over that stretch — he caught just five touchdowns in 30 games under the former Giants QB. Warren will also be competing with Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs for targets in a low-pass-volume Shane Steichen offense. While the young tight end has plenty of "top-12" green flags, projecting him for anything close to the production of recent rookie stars Sam LaPorta and Brock Bowers would be a stretch. He should land somewhere around Engram, Tucker Kraft and David Njoku near the TE1 fringe — rankings that have him in the top six or seven have gone too far.

2. Braelon Allen & Tank Bigsby, Jets & Jaguars, RBs

In a list consisting mostly of rookies, Braelon Allen and Tank Bigsby's hype comes from a different angle. Both are young backs who initially seemed "stuck" behind more notable starters — Breece Hall and Travis Etienne Jr., respectively. But over the past month, both have made significant noise as the potential leaders of more balanced committees. And both are excellent analogs for players from their new coaches' recent pasts. Allen is a 6-foot-1, 235-pound terror who draws occasional comparisons to Derrick Henry and has been tagged as the "David Montgomery" of head coach Aaron Glenn and OC Tanner Engstrand's new "Sonic and Knuckles" duo in New York. And Bigsby is a fitting replacement for Bucky Irving in Liam Coen's new home — Jacksonville — as the hard-to-tackle hammer alongside Etienne's receiving focus.

The question is: Without an injury to the "incumbent," can either of these young RBs carve out a significant enough role to matter for fantasy? And the answer is yes. Both are (arguably) the superior pure runners in their backfields, and both Hall and Etienne might be better suited for pass-heavy snap shares and fewer between-the-tackles carries. Allen and Bigsby's rise in prominence have contributed to trade rumors around both of their counterparts, and while they may not materialize early in the season (or ever), they may be indicative of shifts in the depth chart. RBBC (running back by committee) is the way of the modern NFL, and is extremely hard to avoid outside the first couple rounds. Where Allen and Bigsby ended up going — in the eighth or ninth — is a fine spot to find future fantasy starters in these "foggy" committees. Both could be contributors as early as Week 1 — and if the usage scales tip far enough from the start, could be strong RB2s all season long.

1. Jacory Croskey-Merritt & Austin Ekeler, Commanders, RBs

Without a doubt the biggest hype train of the 2025 summer belongs to Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt, the Commanders' seventh-round pick and running back of the future ... if you buy into the hype. There was excited talk about JCM's ascent even before Washington traded Brian Robinson Jr., but as soon as they shipped B-Rob off to the Bay, all (hype) hell broke loose. From his low point in the 200s (by ADP) all the way into the eighth or ninth round, Croskey-Merritt saw the most meteoric rise of the offseason and is widely being touted as one of the hottest "sleeper" picks in fantasy — if such a thing even exists anymore.

However, as I said in the Risers piece on Croskey-Merritt, I'm far less convinced. Remember, JCM was picked in the last round of the draft back in April. In the last 25 years, just one running back picked in the last round managed to crest 100 fantasy points as a rookie: Isiah Pacheco hit 128.5 to finish as the RB33 in 2022. The next best? Peyton Hillis for the Broncos in 2008, with just 95.2 fantasy points on the season. Historically speaking, it's really, really ... really unlikely that Croskey-Merritt becomes a regular fantasy starter. You know what's less unlikely? That a 30-year-old back who finished top two at the position in both 2021 and 2022, lost 2023 to injury, and then was quietly efficient and effective as a backup in 2024, might take the reigns in this Commanders backfield and be the actual sleeper for 2025. I'm talking, of course, about Austin Ekeler, who's also garnered some hype — though far less than Bill — after the Robinson trade. Out of 50 RBs with 100+ touches last year, Ekeler's 1.02 fantasy points per touch was third-most, behind only Jahmyr Gibbs and James Cook — ahead of Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley (among many others). Ekeler went a round later than JCM in ADP, but I would have taken him at least a round earlier (and did a couple times). It's not impossible Croskey-Merritt breaks all the rules of historical data, but I'm hitching my cart to the far quieter, but far more reliable Ekeler hype horse heading into the year.

🏈 Belichick era starts with a dud

The Belichick era got off to a horrid start on Monday night in Chapel Hill, where the Tar Heels suffered a blowout 48-14 loss to TCU.

From Yahoo Sports' Dan Wolken:

Since he took the job last December, having been thoroughly rejected by the NFL despite his six Super Bowl Rings, the football world has been wondering what 73-year-old Bill Belichick would look like coaching a college team.

It subsequently became a nine-month journey of interest in his personal life, a book tour, a series of awkward interviews and a branding initiative led by his 24-year-old girlfriend.

What we didn't hear much about was the football team he had to coach. Maybe now we know why.

North Carolina's 48-14 drubbing at the hands of TCU was evidence that $10 million for the most accomplished coach in the history of the sport may not go as far as it used to.

In the NFL, we can debate where Belichick ranks among names like Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh and Chuck Noll. As a college coach, Belichick's debut was more in the realm of his former Patriots assistant Charlie Weis, who once described his recruiting pitch at Kansas thusly: "Have you looked at that pile of crap out there?"

Belichick, of course, is too buttoned up to provide such a juicy sound bite. But his assessment of the proceedings Monday was direct and in character.

"They just outplayed us, they outcoached us and they were better than we were. That's all there is to it," Belichick said, speaking in front of a backdrop of balloons that seemed far too festive for the occasion. "They did a lot more things right than we did. Give them credit for being the better team."

While it would be imprudent to declare the Belichick experiment a failure already, you get this kind of honeymoon only once.

As kickoff approached Monday, idyllic Chapel Hill looked like something it has never been: A real college football town with packed tailgates and bars, Tar Heel celebrities like Michael Jordan and Mia Hamm jetting in to be part of the atmosphere and ESPN treating the game like a national event.

Instead, it quickly turned into a social media pile-on. After scoring easily on their first scripted drive to take a 7-0 lead, the Tar Heels played like they have the potential to end up one of the worst teams in FBS.

Did you enjoy the playoff games in Columbus, Clemson, Miami and Tallahassee? That's what they felt like. Big brands. Home stadiums. Exciting atmospheres. Perhaps we could see it all again come December.

Columbus, Ohio — The Arch Manning era got off to a rocky start, as No. 3 Ohio State's defense shut down the top-ranked Longhorns in a 14-7 victory, making Texas the first preseason No. 1 team to lose its opener since 1990.

Sportsbooks make bank: BetMGM's top five Week 1 bets by total money wagered — led by Texas +1 — all went the way of the house in a brutal weekend for the betting public.

Clemson, South Carolina — No. 9 LSU took down No. 4 Clemson, 17-10, for their first Week 1 win since 2019, when they went 15-0 en route to a national title. Could this finally be the year Brian Kelly and the Tigers break through in a crowded SEC?

Heisman Watch: LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier (28/38, 230 yards, TD) leapfrogged Manning to become the new Heisman favorite (+650 at BetMGM), just ahead of South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers (+700). Manning fell from +500 to +1600.

(Chris Arjoon/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Miami, Florida — No. 10 Miami hung on to beat No. 4 Notre Dame, 27-24, thanks to a clutch 47-yard field goal from newcomer Carter Davis with just over a minute left.

Highlight reel: CJ Daniels gave Miami the lead going into halftime with an incredible one-handed catch, pictured above.

Tallahassee, Florida — Fans stormed the field after unranked Florida State stunned No. 8 Alabama, 31-17, in convincing fashion. The Seminoles went 2-10 last season and entered as 14-point underdogs.

Trouble in Tuscaloosa? A mere 14 games into the post-Nick Saban era, Alabama football is in crisis. That's already four losses as a double-digit favorite under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

Despite the fracture, Griscti will not require surgery and is currently recovering at home

Professional Australian basketball player, Ben Griscti, is recovering after a backboard fell on top of him during practice.

The Adelaide 36ers player, 23, sustained a fractured vertebrae on Saturday, Aug. 30, after the hoop's backboard collapsed following a teammate's dunk at Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Arena in Canberra, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Adelaide 36ers basketball team.

On Monday, Sept. 1, the team confirmed in a press release that Griscti would be missing the start of the NBL season.

"Ben was injured when a backboard collapsed on top of him during the team's shoot around at the AIS Arena, ahead of the side's final NBL Blitz game," the release read.

The athlete reportedly waited for an ambulance for over 90 minutes despite the hospital being only five minutes away by car, according to ABC.

"There were a number of other emergencies in the territory at the time of that call," ACT Ambulance Service chief officer David Dutton told the outlet.

"As soon as we were able to dispatch a paramedic crew to that patient they attended, and they transported that patient in a stable condition through to the emergency department," he continued.

Dutton told the outlet that the case was reviewed, and "it was appropriately triaged as a priority two response for ACT Ambulance — so that is a non-lights and sirens response."

He added that Griscti was "conscious, alert and breathing the whole time" and was assisted by a team doctor before the ambulance arrived.

"There was no change in the patient's condition and therefore, no change to the priority of the ambulance response," he stated.

Despite the fracture, Griscti won't require surgery and has since returned home, according to his team.

"He has travelled home to Adelaide and a timeline for him to return to the court will not be set until he is able to get further medical advice to determine the next steps around the management of the injury," they concluded in their statement.

The NBL also said in a release they were "deeply saddened" about Griscti's "serious injury during training at the AIS Arena on Saturday, August 30."

"The NBL has been in direct contact to offer support to Ben, his family and the Adelaide 36ers. The welfare of all players and staff is our highest priority," they added. "The NBL is working with AIS Arena on the matter."

Griscti thanked everyone for "the messages of support and concern," adding that he'll "be back soon," per the NBL Instagram page.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Australian Sports Commission, the operator of AIS Arena, also told ABC that they would be taking the case "seriously" and "will be looking into the incident."

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Olympic champion Gabby Thomas will miss this month's track world championships with an Achilles tendon injury she's been dealing with since May.

Thomas, the American who won the 200-meter sprint in Paris and was on both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter gold-medal relay teams, said she exacerbated the injury in July.

"I understand that it will be disappointing for some track fans to hear this news, but I've finally come to the realization that it's OK to be human and take care of myself," Thomas said in a statement sent out Tuesday to announce the news.

World championships run Sept. 13-21 in Tokyo.

Thomas did not look in top form last month at U.S. nationals, where she rallied to secure the third and final spot in the 200 by .001 seconds. The 28-year-old Thomas said she plans on competing in 2026.

Families who lost loved ones in two crashes of Boeing 737 Max jetliners may get their last chance to demand the company face criminal prosecution Wednesday. That's when a federal judge in Texas is set to hear arguments on a U.S. government motion to dismiss a felony charge against Boeing.

U.S. prosecutors charged Boeing with conspiracy to commit fraud in connection with the crashes that killed 346 people off the coast of Indonesia and in Ethiopia. Federal prosecutors alleged Boeing deceived government regulators about a flight-control system that was later implicated in the fatal flights, which took place less than five months apart in 2018 and 2019.

Boeing decided to plead guilty instead of going to trial, but U.S. District Chief Judge Reed O'Connor rejected the aircraft maker's plea agreement in December. O'Connor, who also will consider whether to let prosecutors dismiss the conspiracy charge, objected to diversity, equity and inclusion policies potentially influencing the selection of an independent monitor to oversee the company's promised reforms.

Lawyers representing relatives of some of the passengers who died cheered O'Connor's decision, hoping it would further their goal of seeing former Boeing executives prosecuted during a public trial and more severe financial punishment for the company. Instead, the delay worked to Boeing's favor.

The judge's refusal to accept the agreement meant the company was free to challenge the Justice Department's rationale for charging Boeing as a corporation. It also meant prosecutors would have to secure a new deal for a guilty plea.

Resolving 'a difficult and complex' case

The government and Boeing spent six months renegotiating their plea deal. During that time, President Donald Trump returned to office and ordered an end to the diversity initiatives that gave O'Connor pause.

By the time the Justice Department's criminal fraud section briefed the judge in late May, the charge and the plea were off the table. A non-prosecution agreement the two sides struck said the government would dismiss the charge in exchange for Boeing paying or investing another $1.1 billion in fines, compensation for the crash victims' families, and internal safety and quality measures.

The Justice Department said it offered Boeing those terms in light of "significant changes" Boeing made to its quality control and anti-fraud programs since entering into the July 2024 plea deal.

The department also said it thought that persuading a jury to punish the company with a criminal conviction would be risky, while the revised agreement ensures "meaningful accountability, delivers substantial and immediate public benefits, and brings finality to a difficult and complex case whose outcome would otherwise be uncertain."

Judge O'Connor has invited some of the families to address the court on Wednesday. One of the people who plans to speak is Catherine Berthet, whose daughter, Camille Geoffrey, died at age 28 when a 737 Max crashed shortly after takeoff from Ethiopia's Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.

Berthet, who lives in France, is part of a group of about 30 families who want the judge to deny the government's request and to appoint a special prosecutor to take over the case.

"While it is no surprise that Boeing is trying to buy everyone off, the fact that the DOJ, which had a guilty plea in its hands last year, has now decided not to prosecute Boeing regardless of the judge's decision is a denial of justice, a total disregard for the victims and, above all, a disregard for the judge," she said in a statement.

The government says the judge can't deny its request

Justice Department lawyers maintain the families of 110 crash victims either support a pre-trial resolution or do not oppose the non-prosecution agreement. The department's lawyers also dispute whether O'Connor has authority to deny the motion without finding prosecutors acted in bad faith instead of the public interest.

While federal judges typically defer to the discretion of prosecutors in such situations, court approval is not automatic.

In the Boeing case, the Justice Department has asked to preserve the option of refiling the conspiracy charge if the company does not hold up its end of the non-prosecution deal over the next two years.

Boeing reached a settlement in 2021 that protected it from criminal prosecution, but the Justice Department determined last year that the company had violated the agreement and revived the charge.

Faulty sensor readings preceded crashes

The case revolves around a new software system Boeing developed for the Max. In the 2018 and 2019 crashes, the software pitched the nose of the plane down repeatedly based on faulty readings from a single sensor, and pilots flying then-new planes for Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines were unable to regain control.

The Transportation Department's inspector general found that Boeing did not inform key Federal Aviation Administration personnel about changes it made to the MCAS software before regulators set pilot training requirements for the Max and certified the airliner for flight.

Acting on the incomplete information, the FAA approved minimal, computer-based training for Boeing 737 pilots, avoiding the need for flight simulators that would have made it more expensive for airlines to adopt the latest version of the jetliner.

Airlines began flying the Max in 2017. After the Ethiopia crash, the planes were grounded worldwide for 20 months while the company redesigned the software.

In the final weeks of Trump's first term, the Justice Department charged Boeing with conspiring to defraud the U.S. government but agreed to defer prosecution and drop the charge after three years if the company paid a $2.5 settlement and strengthened its ethics and legal compliance programs.

The 2021 settlement agreement was on the verge of expiring when a panel covering an unused emergency exit blew off a 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight over Oregon at the beginning of last year. No one was seriously injured, but the potential disaster put Boeing's safety record under renewed scrutiny.

A former Boeing test pilot remains the only individual charged with a crime in connection with the crashes. In March 2022, a federal jury acquitted him of misleading the FAA about the amount of training pilots would need to fly the Max.
