A man left a party planning group chat after being told he must split alcohol costs equally, despite being a non-drinker

He offered to calculate his portion without alcohol and still contribute generously to the event, but was told "everyone pays equally"

The drama sparked a viral debate about fairness in friendships

A man turned to Reddit for support after a disagreement with friends over splitting party costs spiraled into a larger discussion about how non-drinkers are treated in social settings.

The conflict began when his friend invited him and his girlfriend to a surprise party via a WhatsApp group. In the invite, the friend stated that "everyone is going to split the costs equally, so even people who don't drink, please don't annoy me as I don't want to be bothered with any calculations."

The poster noted that he and his girlfriend are the only ones in the group who don't drink alcohol, and he felt uneasy about paying for something they won't consume. "I don't think it fair for both of us to pay for the alcohol (which is usually a significant chunk of the total)," he wrote in his post.

He explained that his "friends like playing drinking games that require a large amount of beer. Generally the cost of the alcohol is a significant chunk of the total cost (e.g. 30-60%)."

The situation is even more complicated because his girlfriend, a student with no income, was also expected to pay equally. "I wouldn't mind much paying a bit extra as I'm doing well financially, but it doesn't sit right with me that she would have to do the same, even more so because she usually drinks/eat very little," he wrote.

Getty

Stock image of friends clinking wine glasses.

Wanting to offer a solution, the poster replied, "Since I don't drink, I volunteer to make any required calculations," hoping to ease the organizer's worries about complicated math.

But the host quickly shut him down, responding, "No, you don't get it, this is a party and everyone splits evenly, it's not about the calculations. It's nothing personal. End of the question."

Feeling dismissed, the man decided to gracefully bow out, replying, "No worries, I'll pass," before exiting the group chat. The situation escalated when the host removed the poster's girlfriend from the group before she had a chance to respond, which he "felt was uncalled for."

Later, another friend reached out to him privately, suggesting he may have overreacted. "Man, I have to say that your reaction was excessive, we are adults and we can spare a few extra dollars each," the friend told him, but the poster remained unconvinced.

"I don't get it – if I was organizing I would never force people to pay for something they don't consume," he wrote, comparing the situation to "inviting a vegan friend to a barbecue and forcing them to split the cost of the meat."

He clarified that he's not trying to avoid contributing to the party, stating, "Even if I don't chip-in for the alcohol, I would obviously chip-in for all the other costs (food, snacks, soft drinks, decoration, etc.)."

He even offered to pay extra for the guest of honor, noting that he would "be more than willing to cover the alcohol costs for the person being celebrated."

While some commenters suggested there may be a "deeper problem," the poster insisted that he has "not been cheap with my friends in the past."

He also clarified that he only left the temporary WhatsApp group for the party, not the main group with all their friends. Despite the tension, he still wants to celebrate the birthday person and reached out to the organizer privately to make sure they knew he wanted "to contribute to their gift (or food/drink quota, if that's meant as the gift)."

The pal confirmed there will be a separate fund for the gift, and the poster plans to contribute despite not attending the party.

Now, he's wondering if his reaction to the request was justifiable.

Getty

Stock photo of tarot cards with crystals and candles

An influencer paid an Etsy witch to keep the rain away from her wedding, and another TikToker paid for a love spell — both of which had positive results

WitchTok and Etsy spells have grown in popularity as many turn to others to understand the world and possibly change their future

With social media and digital word of mouth, these services have only become more popular

It must be the season of the witch.

Recently, magic has been in the air for plenty of social media users. Influencer Halley detailed how her friend Jaz bought a weather spell to ensure it didn't rain on her wedding. Another woman bought a good luck spell to help the Knicks win. One woman asked a witch to cast a love spell on a man, only for the witch to DM her target and rat her out.

Two Etsy witches talked with PEOPLE exclusively about their work, as did a woman who bought a love spell that ultimately worked. With social media and digital word of mouth, these services have only become more popular.

One Etsy witch, who has chosen to remain anonymous, shares her experience, noting that when she first started selling, she wanted only to do "tarot readings, or shipping out crystals or witch boxes that I bless."

Getty

Stock photo of a sage and feather ritual

The witch shares that "Etsy technically does not allow selling 'spells,' but allows psychic and tarot readings if you send the customer a digital downloadable file. I send the customer a picture of the altar used during the spell casting or tarot reading, a signed certificate as a receipt and proof of purchase, and also a downloadable PDF with a note on how the casting went or the reading itself."

"I wanted to work with Etsy and send people tangible items. I quickly discovered that that is not what the customer base wanted and was surprised," the witch continues. "People wanted us to cast spells for them and hold rituals for them. Use our magical energy to shape their world. I started with what I thought would be the most popular: love, luck, wealth/success, protection, healing."

Some of the items offered in her shop align with these offerings: good luck castings, protections and healings. In the past, she has also provided services such as manifesting one's dream partner, altering aspects of one's physical appearance and enhancing brain power.

"People were most interested in asking me for spells that changed them or the world around them," she details. "My most popular spells are very fantastical. Spells to change your body and face without plastic surgery. Spells to transform you into a vampire or a werewolf. Spells to design your perfect love partner and attract them to you."

"For the spells to change how you look, I cast self-love and confidence magick. Customers see themselves as more beautiful and become happier after I do this," the witch shares. "Those who wish to 'build a boyfriend' — a strong love spell is in order, but they need to honor the important qualities they look for in a partner while letting go of ones that are less important."

The spells that are in the highest demand, the Etsy witch shares, are "honestly and sadly, spells that are to change some part of themselves."

Getty

Stock photo of a tarot deck with crystals and dried herbs

"People typically ask to look different, to turn into someone completely different, to swap bodies with someone else. Every single time, I bless these clients with self-love and self-confidence, and I wish them a great change," she reveals. "They don't need to change a thing about themselves, their mindsets and their environment."

One of the biggest challenges, the witch shares, is "keeping up with the messages" and "requests for guidance."

"Someone who ordered one thing from me a year ago is still messaging me, asking for advice. I enjoy helping them and reminding people with serious issues to consult with medical or legal professionals if needed," the witch shares. "The messaging is the biggest challenge of the digital shop, as it allows people constant access to me. As a spiritual advisor, I am let into a lot of very personal details of my clients."

"I wish people knew that even with witchcraft and manifestation work, nothing will come to you instantly and without effort from yourself. The act of casting a spell is like saying a prayer; it's a self-fulfilling prophecy," she continues. "I don't think a protection spell to keep you safe on your walk home will give you physical armor and a shield, but it may bring you a feeling of comfort instead of anxiety."

Alexis Tolentino asked a witch to put a love spell on a guy she wanted to date in 2019.

"We dated for four years," Tolentino, 28, shares. "I eventually told him, and we laughed about it. Who's to say if it worked or it didn't work? The way I see witchcraft in this realm is that it's low-stakes. If you're trying every possible avenue, why not try an Etsy witch spell?"

"Since then, I have dabbled in the occasional Etsy witch because it's fun. Worst case, you spend $10 or $20, and it doesn't work," Tolentino continues. "Best case scenario, you might get what you want out of it. There is a level of validity in the sense that it's a placebo effect, where if you believe that this will be helpful, then maybe things will end up working out in your favor. Since then, I've asked witches for career success, for a money influx and help with moving."

Tolentino, like many others, has shared her experience with the spells on TikTok. The anonymous Etsy witch notes that "social media has made practicing witchcraft much more trendy."

"I noticed an ongoing trend of 'curses' being very popular online, which I am averse to," the witch shares. "Cursing your ex to meet some unfriendly fate is very popular. But, social media has made witchcraft more popular and accessible. Witchcraft is being more widely accepted and is seen in a more positive light."

For Sarah Maher, owner of Village and Vessel and a specialist in online Tarot readings, her online readings are reflective of "nature, which is beautiful but can be cruel."

Sarah Maher

Village and Vessel's Sarah Maher, Etsy Witch

For her, the rise of 'witchtok' and social media "allowed me to meet other practitioners in other spaces and collaborate with them."

"Social media will always tell you what people need, and there is an answer back from people that is helpful," Maher, who has been practicing for 10 years, says. "Things are hard, and people are finding solace in energy work and the unexplainable. There's so much unexplainable stuff happening in the world, and we have to lean into the unexplainable and learn that we have some agency in that."

— sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Another WitchTok trend outside of people buying spells on Etsy is one that many casual scrollers have probably already encountered. Sometimes, practitioners will do general tarot readings on TikTok with no hashtags and no description, claiming the video was "meant to find you" if it appears on your For You page.

Maher says this is a "read for the collective."

"There are different types of witches, and there are people that can tap into the collective," she explains. "I have seen collective readings that hit me personally and felt very accurate for the collective."

Maher recently opened an Etsy shop to offer online Tarot readings, helping "people connect with the energy of the universe."

Sarah Maher

Village and Vessel's Home Healing Bundle

"Etsy works to create these sub-communities where people can find all the things they need," she continues. "They can find the tools they need, the spell tools, the spells, the casters. When I started the shop, I wanted to offer in-person readings, but I felt disconnected from the energy. I have to do online readings because we live in a global world now, and that's why I'm called to do it."

Similar to the Etsy witch, Maher's challenge comes from sharing someone's personal information and guiding them through challenging times.

"Tarot tells the story of a full life that has experienced all that a person can experience. When we pull these cards, which are pretty serious, it's sometimes difficult to be the channel to deliver that information. I will often be the channel delivering the information, but I don't want to hurt someone's feelings. It's a practice of understanding that the energy of the universe is inherently supportive. It wants to give us more information. For tarot, the difficulty that comes with the hard cards is an understanding that it's for the highest good."

A common misconception is that "witchcraft is evil, delving into the dark arts, and tapping into something painful," Maher shares.

"The energy around us is supportive, and it's for us to be open to the illumination of it," she explains. "Witchcraft is so community-oriented that if people could open their minds and hearts to the ideas surrounding witchcraft, they would find a wealth of support, community, love, kindness and learning. It's about supporting each other and getting into [a] space where we're interconnected again."

Roommate Realizes They're the Only One Cleaning Shared Bathroom. So They Stop

Stock image of someone cleaning the bathroom.

One roommate was pushed to their limit after realizing they were the only one cleaning their shared bathroom

Instead of confronting the other two roommates, they decided to stop cleaning — and using the bathroom altogether

The result was better than nothing

In many shared living situations, dividing up chores can quickly become a source of quiet tension.

Common spaces go neglected, dishes accumulate, and cleaning responsibilities often fall unevenly, especially in high-traffic areas like the bathroom, where lack of upkeep is hard to ignore.

One Reddit user's non-confrontational strategy showed how simply opting out can sometimes be the most effective form of protest.

Getty

Stock image of someone cleaning the bathroom.

The anonymous user, who lives with two roommates, found themselves in a familiar, yet frustrating role: the default bathroom cleaner.

"Some reason, I was always the one cleaning our shared bathroom," the poster wrote. "Toilet, mirror, sink, drain, all of it." For reasons unknown — but surely not unfamiliar to anyone who's shared a space — the other roommates simply didn't pitch in.

So, the user devised a silent but effective plan. They decided to stop cleaning and, more importantly, stop using the bathroom altogether.

Rather than confront their roommates directly, the Reddit user opted for total withdrawal. "Started showering at the gym, brushing my teeth in the kitchen, and using the bathroom at work or this coffee shop down the street," they explained.

Getty

Stock image of roommates arguing.

Since they already worked long hours, avoiding the shared bathroom didn't require much sacrifice — just a little strategic planning and, presumably, some top-notch bladder control.

Two weeks passed, and the unregulated and uncleaned bathroom descended into filth. "Moldy curtain, toothpaste crust, hair everywhere," they wrote.

The tipping point came when one of the roommates, no longer able to ignore the increasingly dirty conditions, addressed the issue directly. "Dude, can you clean the bathroom? It's disgusting," one of them asked the poster, who responded matter-of-factly, "Oh, I thought we were taking turns? I haven't even used it."

Getty

Stock image of roommates helping clean the bathroom.

What followed was a moment of silence — brief, uncomfortable, and apparently effective. Without further discussion, the roommates took the hint and the bathroom was cleaned shortly afterward.

While things are still far from perfect, the Reddit user admits the bathroom "actually kinda [gets] kept up with now." Most importantly, they no longer feel like they "need gloves just to pee anymore." A win by any standard.

Sometimes, the best way to force change isn't confrontation, but recognizing unspoken boundaries and the power of absence.

"Turns out cleaning a swamp sucks way more when you're the only one stuck in it," they concluded.

Federal lawsuit adds to allegations of child sexual abuse in Maryland youth detention centers

BALTIMORE (AP) — A federal lawsuit could open a new chapter in an escalating legal battle in Maryland, where officials are struggling to address an unexpected onslaught of claims alleging child sexual abuse in state-run juvenile detention facilities.

With thousands of similar claims already pending in state court, the litigation has raised questions about how Maryland will handle the potential financial liability.

The new federal suit, filed Wednesday on behalf of three plaintiffs, seeks $300 million in damages — an amount that far exceeds caps imposed on claims filed in state court. It alleges Maryland juvenile justice leaders knew about a culture of abuse inside youth detention facilities and failed to address it, violating the plaintiffs' civil rights.

A message seeking comment was left Thursday with the state's Department of Juvenile Services. The department generally doesn't comment on pending litigation. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General declined to comment.

An estimated 11,000 plaintiffs have sued in state court, according to the attorneys involved. Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson said Wednesday that he believes negotiations for a potential settlement are ongoing between attorneys for the plaintiffs and the attorney general's office. Officials have said the state is facing a potential liability between $3 billion and $4 billion.

Lawsuits started pouring in after a state law passed in 2023 eliminated the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse claims in Maryland. The change came in the immediate aftermath of a scathing investigative report that revealed widespread abuse within the Archdiocese of Baltimore. It prompted the archdiocese to file for bankruptcy to protect its assets.

But Maryland leaders didn't anticipate they'd be facing similar budgetary concerns because of claims against the state's juvenile justice system.

Facing a potentially enormous payout, lawmakers recently passed an amendment to limit future liabilities. The new law reduces caps on settlements from $890,000 to $400,000 for cases filed after May 31 against state institutions, and from $1.5 million to $700,000 for private institutions. It allows each claimant to receive only one payment, instead of being able to collect for each act of abuse.

Suing in federal court allows plaintiffs to sidestep those limits.

"Despite Maryland's recent unconstitutional legislative efforts to insulate itself from liability for the horrific sexual brutalization of children in its custody, Maryland cannot run from liability under Federal law," plaintiffs' attorney Corey Stern said in a statement. "The United States Constitution was created for all of us, knowing that some would need protection from the tyranny of their political leaders."

The three plaintiffs in the federal case allege they were sexually abused by staff at two juvenile detention centers. While other lawsuits have mainly presented allegations of abuse occurring decades ago, the federal complaint focuses on events alleged to have happened in 2019 and 2020. The plaintiffs were 14 and 15 years old.

The victims feared their sentences would be extended if they spoke out, according to the complaint. They accuse state officials of turning a blind eye to a "culture of sexual brutalization and abuse."

Stern said he anticipates more federal claims will be forthcoming.

Trump gets closer to naming his pick to replace Powell as Fed chair

Main Image

-

 • Trump gets closer to naming his pick to replace Powell as Fed chair

Jennifer SchonbergerJune 26, 2025 at 11:27 PM

President Trump is getting closer to naming his replacement for Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell as his patience with the central bank chairman runs out.

Trump told reporters Wednesday that he is down to three or four candidates. He could announce his pick soon, two people close to the administration told Yahoo Finance.

The possibilities, these people said, include former Fed governor Kevin Warsh, National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, former World Bank president David Malpass, and Fed governor Christopher Waller.

The Wall Street Journal reported late Wednesday that he could announce his final pick by September or October — or even this summer — to undercut Powell's authority for the remainder of his term ending in May 2026. The Journal also reported on the list of possible candidates.

"I know within three or four people who I'm going to pick," the president said Wednesday without offering specific names.

Steve Moore, a longtime adviser to the president, told Yahoo Finance that Trump does want to announce his pick sometime soon, and that he does view it as a shot over the bow at Powell. Warsh, Hassett, Bessent and Malpass are all under consideration, he added, but Waller is not because he voted to keep rates on hold at the last central bank meeting.

Another person close to the administration said late September is possible timing for an announcement, and that Bessent, Hassett, Waller and Malpass are under consideration but that the president is souring on Warsh.

A White House official said no Fed chairman decisions are imminent, although the president has the right to change his mind and he has many good options for the post.

This is not the first time that an early pick to replace Powell has been floated. Before Trump was elected, Bessent in 2024 floated the idea of naming a "shadow chair" well before Powell's term was up, ensuring that "no one is really going to care what Jerome Powell has to say anymore."

Bessent told lawmakers earlier this month he would like to remain in his seat until 2029, but he did not dismiss the possibility of becoming the next chair of the Fed.

Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent speaks with reporters on Tuesday. (Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images) (Tom Williams via Getty Images)

Bessent said he has "the best job" in Washington and is "happy to do what President Trump wants me to do," while noting that he "would like to stay in my seat through 2029" to help carry out the administration's agenda.

Council of Economic Advisers chair Stephen Miran in a Yahoo Finance interview Thursday dismissed the chances of any economic fallout that could come from such a potential move by Trump to announce a "shadow" chair.

"I don't know that I see risks to the economy from what the administration does on this stuff, as you know the Federal Reserve sets interest rates and so the primary risks to the economy are from what's actually going on with interest rates not from anything that we do or do not do on that front," he told Yahoo Finance.

The active consideration of Powell successors comes after a period of intensifying pressure from Trump as the Fed chair's guarded wait-and-see monetary policy stance continues to inflame tensions with the White House. The president has called repeatedly for rate cuts and lobbed a series of insults at Powell via social media, from "loser" to "fool."

Read more: How the Fed rate decision affects your bank accounts, loans, credit cards, and investments

Trump's comments on Wednesday didn't address the question of whether he is looking to fire Powell or announce his final pick quickly. Last week the president mused: "Maybe, just maybe, I'll have to change my mind about firing him?"

Powell has said he intends to serve out his term as chair and that he can't be removed by law.

"He goes out pretty soon, fortunately, because I think he's terrible," Trump added Wednesday.

President Donald Trump. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci) ()

The comments from the president came as Powell sat before Senate lawmakers for his second day of regularly scheduled testimony before Congress.

Powell told lawmakers that the central bank is "well-positioned to wait" on any interest rate adjustments until it has more clarity on how Trump's tariffs will affect inflation and the direction of the US economy.

Read more: What Trump's tariffs mean for the economy and your wallet

The president's attacks on Powell intensified at the end of last week as Trump called for rates to drop from 4.25% to 4.5% to between 1% and 2% and said of Powell and the Fed's board of governors, "I don't know why the Board doesn't override this Total and Complete Moron!"

Trump repeated some of those points in a Tuesday social media post, calling for rates "at least two to three points lower" and saying that Powell "will be in Congress today in order to explain, among other things, why he is refusing to lower the Rate."

"I hope Congress really works this very dumb, hardheaded person, over. We will be paying for his incompetence for many years to come."

On Wednesday, Trump reiterated his oft-stated case for why Powell should lower rates by at least one percentage point immediately, citing "no inflation."

U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell testifies before a Senate committee on Wednesday. REUTERS/Kevin Mohatt (REUTERS / Reuters)

He also recounted an earlier face-to-face meeting with Powell, offering a mocking voice for Powell, and repeated his personal attacks by saying "I think he's a very stupid person actually" and calling him "an average mentally person."

Trump is not the only one calling for lower rates following the last meeting on June 18-19, when all central bank officials voted to keep rates unchanged for the fourth consecutive time.

Even some of Powell's fellow policymakers — Fed governors Michelle Bowman and Waller — have said in recent days that they now see cutting rates as soon as the Fed's next policy meeting in July due to recent mild inflation readings.

But other officials have pushed back on that urgency and warned that it is too soon to know the true effects of tariffs on inflation.

Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond President Thomas Barkin said Thursday tariffs likely to push inflation up over coming months, even though "I don't expect the impact on inflation to be anywhere near as significant as what we just experienced" during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trump has even mused about appointing himself Fed chair. One lawmaker asked Powell on Tuesday if that was even possible.

"I don't know," Powell said, adding that it's "not a question for me."

Powell has not said if he also plans to leave the Fed's board after his chairmanship is up next May. His term as a Fed governor is not up until 2028.

And on Tuesday and Wednesday, he repeatedly dodged questions about Trump, Trump's policies, and the president's string of personal insults.

"All I want to do in what's left of my time at the Fed is to have the economy be strong and have inflation be under control. I want to turn it over to my successor in that condition."

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong's top American diplomat said Thursday that the policies of the Chinese and Hong Kong governments have curtailed freedoms, pointing to the case of jailed prominent activist Jimmy Lai and what he called "transnational regression."

At a reception for the U.S. Independence Day, U.S. Consul General Gregory May, who will join the U.S. Embassy in Beijing next month after a three-year term in Hong Kong, told reporters he is a "big fan" of Hong Kong, and that its people and spirit made the city a good place.

"Hong Kong is a great city. What is not great is the policies of the mainland Chinese government, the Hong Kong government, that have eroded freedom," he said.

Following the 2019 anti-government movement that filled Hong Kong's streets with protesters, Beijing imposed a national security law that it deemed necessary for the city's stability. Under the law, Lai and many other leading activists were prosecuted.

May said U.S. President Donald Trump was very concerned about the fate of Lai, who is fighting national security charges that carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Before he was elected Trump said he would "100%" get Lai out of jail.

May said Washington is also concerned about others, jailed for the peaceful expression of political views.

"The other friction point in my term here has been transnational repression, and it's very disappointing to see over my three years here, attempts by Hong Kong authorities to enforce the national security law within the borders of the United States against U.S. persons," he said.

He was referring to accusations by Hong Kong authorities against some overseas-based activists claiming they violated the security law and offering rewards of 1 million Hong Kong dollars ($128,000) for information leading to each of their arrests.

The Hong Kong government on Thursday night condemned May for what it said was his neglect of the spirit of the rule of law and his use of unfounded comments to deliberately mislead the public and smear the national security law.

In a statement, it noted that the U.S. also has national security laws. It said American politicians were criticizing Hong Kong's system despite the city's constitutional duty to safeguard security.

"This represents clear hypocrisy and double standards," it said, adding that no one should comment on Lai's case since legal proceedings are ongoing.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Consulate condemned the Hong Kong government for what it called repression of 4th of July celebrations after city education authorities reportedly cautioned teachers and students not to attend events organized by American diplomats.

May said he was disappointed over the move and that it was "pretty perplexing."

On Tuesday, the city's education bureau responded to media queries, saying schools have the responsibility to be good gatekeepers and to enhance the sensitivity of teachers and students to national security at that time.
