Martin Scorsese received exciting news on Tuesday morning.
The director behind iconic films such as The Wolf of Wall Street and Killers of the Flower Moon earned his first Outstanding Guest Actor nomination for his role in The Studio. Scorsese has been nominated and won multiple Emmy awards for his directing throughout the 2000s and 2010s, but this is his first time being nominated for an acting role.
Apple TV's comedy The Studio follows Matt Remick (Seth Rogen), a newly appointed head of Continental Studios who is desperate for celebrity approval. He and his executive team must juggle corporate demands with creative ambitions as they try to keep movies alive and relevant.
Remick has a meeting with Martin Scorsese (played by Scorsese himself) in the first episode of the series, who pitches an original movie about Jonestown, the mass murder-suicide orchestrated by cult leader Jim Jones, in which 900 people died by drinking laced Kool-Aid.
Evan Goldberg, the creator of The Studio, told Deadline that they specifically wrote the scene for Scorsese in the pilot episode and "to our absolute shock and bafflement," the film director agreed to do it.
Other nominees for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series include Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Ron Howard and Anthony Mackie, all nominated for their separate cameos in The Studio, as well as Jon Bernthal for his role in FX's The Bear.
As Emmy nominations were announced Tuesday morning, Martin Scorsese's daughter, Francesca, who is also an actress, shared a screenshot of a FaceTime call capturing the moment her father found out he had been nominated on her Instagram story. In the photo, the 82-year-old director is seen covering his face with his hands, smiling softly, while Francesca appears in the corner of the screen, beaming with pride.
