Nine attorneys – five men and four women – fill two tables in the courtroom for Sean 'Diddy' Combs.

Some are confrontational cross examiners, others take a softer approach to witnesses and a handful are focused solely on making legal arguments to try to get certain exhibits in and others out.

But they all answer to one person: Combs himself.

On Friday, Combs embraced his lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, after he finished an impassioned closing argument urging the jury to acquit Combs and "return him to his family."

Over nearly five hours Agnifilo, who paced back and forth, argued to the jury there was no conspiracy or crime. He said the case was about personal drug use and a "lifestyle" the women agreed to participate in. Agnifilo suggested prosecutors targeted Combs because of who he is, drawing a complaint by prosecutors, which prompted the judge to tell the jury who the government investigated and who a grand jury indicts is not their concern.

Weeks earlier, as another lawyer questioned Combs' former girlfriend Cassie Ventura, whose allegations are at the center of the criminal case, Combs scribbled on Post-It notes and passed one after another to Agnifilo.

The stakes are high.

Combs has pleaded not guilty to five counts, including one count of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted of the most serious charges, Combs could face as much as life in prison and a minimum sentence of 15 years.

During six weeks of testimony, the jury reviewed dozens of text messages and financial records and saw photos of injuries sustained by Ventura that were allegedly caused by Combs. Jurors also viewed graphic materials, which included sexually explicit videos during direct and cross examination of a witness.

Prosecutors called nearly three dozen witnesses. Two accusers testified that Combs forced them into having sex with male escorts. At least six people who worked for Combs testified about working long hours, getting drugs for Combs, being reimbursed for Combs' personal expenses and setting up and cleaning up hotel rooms where authorities allege sex trafficking took place.

A security officer for the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles, where Combs was seen physically assaulting Ventura on a 2016 surveillance video first published by CNN, testified that Combs paid him $100,000 to obtain what he thought was the only copy of the footage.

Sean "Diddy" Combs and Cassie Ventura are seen in security video in 2016. - Obtained by CNN

Prosecutors alleged Combs, aided by security guards, personal assistants and others at Bad Boy Entertainment, was involved in a racketeering conspiracy that involved forced labor, kidnapping, arson, sex trafficking, bribery, obstruction of justice and drug offenses.

Combs' defense made a strategic decision not to call any witnesses when it was their turn to present their case.

Instead, like most defense teams, they were trying their case since the start, attempting to cast doubt on the prosecution's case by challenging the credibility of the government's witnesses.

"You can't wait until your case to propagate your theory, you have to do it in their case, so every witness furthers your narrative" said Joey Jackson, a criminal defense lawyer and CNN legal analyst. "It's very difficult to defend against all of this horrific behavior," Jackson added.

To reach a guilty verdict, the jury of eight men and four women must find Combs reached an agreement with someone and at least two of those so-called predicate acts were committed within 10 years. The jury must be unanimous on the acts. Combs is also accused of sex trafficking Ventura and a former girlfriend who testified under the pseudonym "Jane" by force, fraud or coercion.

Combs' lawyers have pushed the opposite theory – that while he did physically assault Ventura and was a bad boyfriend, the sex acts were part of a consensual kinky lifestyle called "Freak Offs," "king nights" or "hotel nights." They sought to show the jury that Bad Boy was a legitimate business and Combs' wild side was part of his personal, not professional, life.

"Every single witness has to have a clear objective. I don't think it's about meandering or grandstanding, you have to get in and out," Jackson said.

The Legal Team

Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, who have known Combs for years, are leading his packed defense team.

Agnifilo started as a local and federal prosecutor but has spent most of his career in criminal defense.

Attorney Marc Agnifilo, left, and Teny Geragos, right, for Sean "Diddy" Combs, arrive at Manhattan federal court, Thursday, October 10 2024, in New York. - Yuki Iwamura/AP

He is currently representing Luigi Mangione, the accused killer of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, with his wife Karen Friedman Agnifilo.

For nearly two decades, he worked closely with criminal defense attorney Ben Brafman, who previously defended Combs in a case related to a shooting at a nightclub, and together they represented Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund who faced sexual assault charges but were later dropped.

Agnifilo has handled the cross-examinations of some former Bad Boy employees and law enforcement officials and is taking the lead when addressing the judge.

Geragos, the daughter of celebrity attorney Mark Geragos, left Brafman's firm to join Agnifilo, when he opened his own firm last year. They are an experienced trial duo, teaming up in past years to represent Nxivm founder Keith Raniere and former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng.

At the Combs trial, Geragos delivered the defense's opening statement and handled the days long cross-examination of "Jane."

Appellate specialists Alexandra Shapiro and Jason Driscoll are handling legal arguments over evidence, and Anna Estevao, who crossed examined Ventura, who until May worked at a law firm that is defending dozens of civil lawsuits against Combs that were filed in the wake of Ventura's 2023 lawsuit. Combs has denied any wrongdoing.

Brian Steel, attorney for Sean "Diddy" Combs, arrives at court for Combs' sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy trial at U.S. court in Manhattan, in New York City, May 29. - Eduardo Munoz/Reuters

On the eve of trial, Combs brought in three more attorneys to his team - Xavier Donaldson, a criminal defense lawyer in New York, and two trial attorneys from Atlanta, Steel and Nicole Westmoreland, who recently represented rapper Young Thug and a co-defendant in a criminal racketeering trial.

As the trial was underway, yet another lawyer appeared: Jonathan Bach, a colleague of Shapiro, to exclusively handle the cross examination of a government expert witness, psychologist Dawn Hughes. He's since been absent from the courtroom.

Cross examination: BFF and the 'Perry Mason' moment

Each lawyer on the team has their own style. Some are more aggressive in their cross examination, while others tapped into what some legal analysts call the "best friend" approach.

As Estevao cross-examined Ventura, who was more than eight months pregnant at the time of her testimony, the attorney asked about Ventura's accomplishments at age 21 when her relationship with Combs was starting.

"Fair to say that you were a celebrity in your own right?" Estevao asked, before adding, "And you're very beautiful and charming?"

Lawyer Anna Estevao cross examines Casandra "Cassie" Ventura as Judge Arun Subramanian presides during Sean "Diddy" Combs' sex trafficking trial in New York City on May 16, 2025 in this courtroom sketch. - Jane Rosenberg/Reuters

Those type of questions can be disarming and lower the guard of witnesses, making them more agreeable, attorneys say.

Ventura testified it was "always in the back of my mind" that Combs could physically hurt her if she didn't participate in certain sex acts or try to blackmail her by threatening to release videos of the "Freak Offs." When Estevao asked Ventura if part of the reason she participated in "Freak Offs" was to make Combs happy, she agreed.

"The school of thought can be a female can go a bit harder because in a sense optically, it's not a man crossing that line of what may be victim shaming," said Misty Marris, a criminal defense attorney.

Of the Ventura cross examination, she said, "It's more gentle, more conversational and inviting somebody to be open."

"Sometimes that's very effective because the guard is let down from the witness," she said.

The lead attorneys have used a similar approach. Agnifilo sounds almost apologetic when introducing himself to the witness he's about to cross-examine, advising them if they don't understand his question, they should tell him. And Geragos, who has a mastery of the lengthy exhibits, speaks in a casual, approachable manner, sometimes poking fun at herself.

Westmoreland is more direct when casting doubt on witness testimony. She challenged Bryana Bongolan, a friend of Ventura who testified that Combs dangled her over a 17-story balcony and threw her onto furniture, causing her injuries.

Combs defense attorney Nicole Westmoreland cross-examines Bryana Bongolan on June 5. - Christine Cornell

Prosecutors showed the jury a photograph of a large bruise on Bongolan's leg that she testified was taken "the same day" as the injury and showed the jury the image's metadata for the photo, indicating it was taken on September 26, 2016.

On cross examination, Westmoreland used a government exhibit of Combs' hotel invoice from the Trump International Hotel and Tower in New York that showed him staying at the hotel from September 24 through September 29, 2016.

"You agree that one person can't be in two places at the same time?" Westmoreland asked.

"In, like, theory, yeah," Bongolan testified.

Outside the presence of the jury, Judge Arun Subramanian called the cross a "real Perry Mason moment" that, he said, "blew a hole through the direct testimony of Ms. Bongolan."

Lawyers caution that long cross examinations can backfire and bore the jury. For several witnesses, Comb's team's cross examination went as long or longer than the prosecution's questions.

One tactic that Comb's lawyers have used repeatedly in questioning government witnesses is to repeat evidence that bolsters their defense.

Geragos, in opening statements, said the case is about "voluntary, adult choices made by capable adults and consensual relationships."

To further her argument, Geragos asked a law enforcement officer called by prosecutors to re-read some of Ventura's messages to Combs.

In one of those messages, Ventura wrote, "I'm always ready to freak off LOLOL."

CNN's Lauren del Valle, Nicki Brown and Elizabeth Wagmeister contributed to this report.

Rising summer heat increases risk of child deaths in hot cars

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A record heat wave that spread across the East Coast of the United States during the first week of summer has child advocates warning parents and caretakers about the risks of heatstroke to children left inside hot vehicles.

So far this year, nine children have died after being left unattended in vehicles in California, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, New Jersey and North Carolina, according to Kids and Car Safety, which collects data on hot car deaths. Five died in June.

And last year, 39 children in the U.S. died after being left in hot cars.

Why hot cars are so dangerous for children

Human-caused climate change keeps dialing up temperatures and extreme weather, scientists say. But the temperature outside doesn't have to be super hot for a child left in a vehicle to be affected by the heat, said Kathy Wall, director of Safe Kids Palm Beach County.

"Inside, the vehicle can heat up 20 degrees in just 20 minutes," Wall said. "So if you imagine it's an 80 degree day, which in South Florida is a cool day, it could be over 100 degrees within 10 minutes inside the car."

Hot car deaths can happen any time of year, and since 1998, every state but Alaska has reported a hot car death, according to the National Safety Council. In both 2018 and 2019, a record 53 children died after being left in hot cars.

About 80% of the heat rise in vehicles happens in the first 30 minutes of a child being left inside, when maximum temperatures can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius), according to data compiled by Jan Null, a certified consulting meteorologist at San Jose State University.

"Children sweat a lot less than adults do and their internal temperature can increase three to five times faster than an adult. So that's why it's just as important to make sure that your child isn't left in the vehicle, especially during these rising temperatures," said Capt. Karen Derogatis of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

It can happen to anyone

While it's easy to place blame for leaving a child in a vehicle, even people trained to know the dangers have made that tragic mistake, Wall said.

"It's not a socioeconomic group, it's not a cultural group," she said. "This sadly has happened to doctors, it's happened to dentists, it happened to school teachers, it's happened to child care workers. Nobody is exempt from this."

Distraction often leads to forgetting about a child in the backseat, which is why it is important to create routines and reminders, she said.

"It sounds crazy, but sometimes people get out of routines or are distracted, especially in today's world. There's lots going on in the news, lots going with families," she said.

A parent who normally doesn't drop a child off at a day care facility might become distracted and forget that the child is in the vehicle, she said.

Create a reminder that a child is in the backseat

She encourages parents and caregivers to establish routines.

"We have an acronym, ACT," Wall said.

A stands for avoiding leaving a child unattended in a vehicle.

C stands for creating a reminder that works best for you. Authorities suggest leaving a personal item such as a purse or briefcase in the backseat so you'll have to open the back door before locking the vehicle.

T is to take action right away. "If you see a child in a car, don't try to figure out how long they've been in the car. Call 911 immediately," Wall said.

Some newer cars offer warnings for drivers to check the backseat for passengers.

Double checking the vehicle is key, said Derogatis, the fire captain.

"If you make it a common habit, just like you would look in their rear view mirror to see if somebody's behind you, or if you look at your side view mirror to see if you want to switch lanes, make it habit to look in your rearview mirror, whether you have a child or an animal or anything, just to ensure that they are as safe as possible," she said.

GOP support for Trump agenda in limbo as Senate barrels toward weekend vote

President Donald Trump's push to pass his massive agenda in the Senate is hanging by thread as GOP leaders barrel toward a critical vote this weekend that, as of Friday night, is still short of the support to pass.

Just hours after Senate Majority Leader John Thune informed senators they would take a critical first vote on Saturday, a key GOP senator warned he would vote against proceeding to the package unless there are major changes – and several other holdouts are uncertain on how they'll land.

That warning shot came from Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who is up for reelection next November and has been one of the most vocal critics of the Medicaid cuts used to help pay for Trump's tax cuts and spending cuts package.

Speaking to reporters Friday, Tillis again raised concerns over the bill's "fundamentals" and cuts to Medicaid and suggested his vote wouldn't change unless the measure "transforms radically overnight."

Losing Tillis on Saturday's expected procedural vote – which will be closely watched by Trump – would be a major blow to Senate GOP leaders, who can only afford to lose three Republican votes to advance the bill.

Thune and GOP leaders have spent months building to this moment, racing to draft the bill as quickly as possible in an effort to ensure Trump's agenda is on his desk by the Fourth of July.

If the bill fails its first procedural vote on Saturday, GOP leaders will have to retool the package, amounting to a huge setback for Trump. And it's not just about that Independence Day timeline: GOP leaders fear that any delay in passing Trump's agenda would embolden the party's critics to seek more changes – which could lead their fragile coalition to fall apart.

Already, outspoken fiscal hawk Sen. Rand Paul is planning to vote against it over the plan's inclusion of a $5 trillion debt-limit increase. And Tillis is not the only Republican threatening to oppose the bill over the proposed cuts to Medicaid. Sens. Josh Hawley, Lisa Murkowski, Jerry Moran and Susan Collins have all made similar remarks as they've worked with leadership to trim those provisions.

But simply restoring that Medicaid funding may not be enough to win Thune those votes on the floor – it could also cost him votes among Senate GOP hardliners. Sen. Ron Johnson has railed on how the bill is projected to balloon the budget deficit, and another fiscal hawk, Sen. Mike Lee, has suggested he and Johnson along with Sen. Rick Scott could vote as a bloc on Saturday. None have yet to say how they'll vote on the key initial procedural vote Saturday.

If all goes to plan, Senate leaders will land the 51 GOP votes to formally begin debating Trump's agenda and then tee up one of the chamber's storied traditions: a series of round-the-clock amendment votes known as vote-a-rama. Democrats will use this overnight session to push on any number of GOP weak points on the bill, particularly Medicaid and other safety net programs.

The Senate could then vote on final passage sometime in the middle of the night Saturday or Sunday morning. And if successful, the House would return mid-week to take up the bill with the hope of Trump signing it at the White House on July 4.

One of the biggest hurdles for Republicans is the race to rewrite text in compliance with the Senate's complex budget rules, which are governed by the nonpartisan parliamentarian.

In recent days, the parliamentarian has ruled against key GOP provisions – from the so-called provider tax, which helps states fund their Medicaid programs to some provisions of a government spectrum auction. That forces the Senate GOP to dial back those provisions, or else Trump's bill would be subject to a Democratic filibuster.

Several Republicans said Friday night they need to see the final bill text – which has not been released – before judging whether they would open debate on the sweeping measure.

"I don't have the bill, how can I vote on something I don't know" what's in it, Johnson said.

Hawley, who has been deeply concerned about Medicaid cuts, also said the vote hinges on what's in the bill: "Got to see the text."

Senate GOP leaders hope to release a mostly final version of the bill Friday night or Saturday morning, but the full version may not be ready before the anticipated Saturday vote to open debate, since the Senate Finance Committee is still furiously working to make sure its language complies with the budget rules. The Finance provisions are key because of both tax and health provisions – specifically, Medicaid.

"I still don't have final language from Finance yet, which obviously is of tremendous concern to me given the Medicaid provisions," Collins said.

Multiple GOP senators dismissed concerns about speeding ahead with the vote without final text in hand.

"We discussed this thing ad nauseam," Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno said, estimating that Republicans have met on this bill for "thousands" of hours so far this year. "The final tax is not out. But we know where we are going."

Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri added: "When you have legislation like this, you're going to have things you need to work through until the very end."

This story has been with additional details.

Senate Republicans seek to end EV tax credit by September 30

David ShepardsonJune 28, 2025 at 12:43 AM

By David Shepardson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Senate Republicans late Friday released a revised tax and budget bill that would end the $7,500 tax credit on new electric vehicle sales and leases on September 30 as well as the $4,000 tax credit for used EVs.

The prior version would have ended the credit for new sales 180 days after the bill was signed into law, 90 days for used vehicles and immediately ended the credit for leased vehicles not assembled in North America and meeting other requirements.

Republicans have taken aim at EVs on a number of fronts, a reversal from former President Joe Biden's policy that encouraged electric vehicles and renewable energy to fight climate change and reduce emissions.

The House of Representatives version would allow the $7,500 new-EV tax credit to continue through the end of 2025, and through the end of 2026 for automakers that have not yet sold 200,000 EVs before killing it.

The Senate bill also includes a provision to eliminate fines for failing to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy rules in a move aimed at making it easier for automakers to build gas-powered vehicles.

The Republican bill exempts interest paid on auto loans from taxes for new cars made in the U.S. through 2028, but phases it out for individual taxpayers making more than $100,000 annually.

Senate Republicans dropped a bid to force the U.S. Postal Service to scrap thousands of electric vehicles and charging equipment in the bill following a ruling from the Senate parliamentarian.

The U.S. Postal Service has 7,200 electric vehicles, made up of Ford e-Transit and specially built Next Generation Delivery Vehicles built by Oshkosh Defense and warned scrapping its EVs would cost it $1.5 billion.

President Donald Trump this month signed a resolution approved by Congress to bar California's landmark plan to end the sale of gasoline-only vehicles by 2035, which has been adopted by 11 other states representing a third of the U.S. auto market.

"This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into," she captioned her photo. "I am not used to commenting on things like this nor taking them seriously but as this situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up."

"Firstly, many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting," Cotillard wrote, referring to Canet, adding, "He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need."

Before concluding and translating the same message in French, she said, "I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment."

Jeremy Allen White opened up about seeing his Calvin Klein billboard in New York City for the first time

White wandered over to the billboard very soon after it was unveiled, where he had a "very beautiful, private moment" with himself

"And before the whole world got, you know—" White began, and Fallon cut in, "—their private moments with you"

Jeremy Allen White is (like the rest of us) cherishing his Calvin Klein campaign!

The Bear actor, 34, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, June 26, and opened up about his recent ad for Calvin Klein. For the campaign, White posed in the brand's underwear and baggy jeans, reclining shirtless on a couch.

According to Fallon, the campaign "broke the internet."

Fallon then produced a snap of one of the campaign's Houston Street billboards, which saw a black-and-white shot of White, again shirtless and sporting white Calvin Klein briefs.

White grew up in Brooklyn, and watched a rotating stream of Calvin Klein models grace that billboard his whole life. Before White's ad reached the internet or social media, he checked it out with his childhood friend Gabriel Gomez.

"It was fresh up for maybe like 30 minutes or an hour," White recalled. "And it was like this very beautiful, private moment I had with myself."

"And before the whole world got, you know—" White began, and Fallon cut in, "—their private moments with you," and the audience giggled.

Fallon then revealed his own Calvin Klein ad, made during his stint on Saturday Night Live — complete with the dramatic stare into the camera, the lounging poses, a questionable explosion in the background and the CK logo. The only thing missing, Fallon pointed out, was actual Calvin Klein underwear.

The Bear recently debuted its fourth season on Wednesday, June 25.
