The reason for welcoming French President Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, to Windsor Castle instead of Buckingham Palace is all about logistics

Buckingham Palace is the British royal family's most iconic royal residence, but King Charles isn't using it to host the state visit from France for a practical reason.

On July 8, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, arrived in the U.K. for the start of an official three-day state visit.

Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed them at RAF Northolt before the group traveled to Windsor, where the King and Queen Camilla formally welcomed the Macrons at the Royal Dais on Datchet Road. From there, they all ride in horse-drawn carriages to Windsor Castle for the traditional first day of programming for an inward state visit — with highlights including a royal salute, the performance of national anthems, a lunch and a tour of a special exhibition related to the visiting nation — to get underway.

It's a break from tradition for King Charles, 76, to host the latest state visit at Windsor Castle instead of Buckingham Palace in London. The tweak was explained by the King's team on social media, previously saying that the state visit from France would be hosted at Windsor Castle "due to the Buckingham Palace Reservicing Programme," as the iconic royal residence is amid an ongoing refurbishment.

The renovation project began in April 2017 and is due to wrap in 2027, with an overhaul of the building's infrastructure being completed in phased stages. The royal family's website says that the palace "will remain occupied and fully operational for the duration," though it's notable that King Charles is not hosting the state visit there.

The Macrons are also staying at Windsor Castle during their official trip to the U.K., which runs from July 8 to July 10. It was long on the royal calendar that the couple would stay at the castle, as the palace revealed that detail when the state visit from France was announced in May.

The move to host the Macrons there meant that Prince William and Princess Kate wouldn't have to travel far from home to attend any events.
