USA gymnastics star Sunisa "Suni" Lee brought a very special date to the 2025 ESPY Awards.

The six time Olympic medalist was joined on the red carpet by the doctor who has been treating her incurable kidney condition which was was diagnosed with in 2023.

"I'm so excited," she told ESPN's Kevin Negandhi and Elle Duncan ahead of Wednesday's ceremony. "It's her first time on a red carpet. So it's really fun for the both of us. But she was the one person who actually believed in me whenever I was going through everything."

Lee 22, was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2023 — which forced her to end her college gymnastics career at Auburn University. She would go on to coming compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics and add three more medals to her name despite the diagnosis.

"I mean, it was probably one of the hardest things that I've done," she told the SportsCenter co-hosts on the ESPYS red carpet. "There were so many times where I wanted to quit gymnastics, and also I just didn't believe in myself. I mean, having a doctor, quite literally, tell you that you're never going to be able to do this again, it's kind of like – it's very heartbreaking one, because it was out of my control. But also the Olympics has always been my dream, so yeah, I guess it was just very surreal to be here, and I'm just so proud to be where I am right now."

The Team USA gymnast, who is nominated for the Best Comeback Athlete category, certainly went for the gold at Wednesday's ceremony in a glittering Oscar de La Renta gown featuring a high slit and all over sequins. She accessorized with matching metallic heels and long, side-party waves.

When asked if she planned to return to the Olympic Games in 2028, the athlete remained coy.

"I'm just really excited to see how they're all going to work up to it and keep building from that, because I feel like we've had such a really strong team," she said. "And even just seeing like the upcoming of all women's sports has been really amazing. So I'm just really excited to see how it all comes out."
