With Prince George turning 12 on July 22, royal watchers are wondering whether the family will uphold a decades-old travel tradition.
The rule, first enforced when Prince William turned 12, prohibits senior royals from traveling together — aimed at protecting the monarchy's line of succession in the event of a tragic accident.
King Charles' former pilot, Graham Laurie, explained the change in protocol during a 2023 episode of "A Right Royal Podcast."
"Interestingly, we flew all four: the Prince [Charles], the Princess [Diana], Prince William and Prince Harry, up until Prince William was 12 years old," he recalled.
"After that, he had to have a separate aircraft, and we could only fly all four together when they were young with the written permission of Her Majesty," referring to Queen Elizabeth.
As George's birthday quickly approaches, Prince William and Kate Middleton may face the decision of whether their eldest son will begin traveling separately.

However, they could still request special permission from King Charles to continue flying as a family.
The Prince and Princess of Wales may also choose to break tradition, as they've consistently aimed to raise Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis with a more everyday upbringing — one that leans toward modern parenting and steers away from the formality of royal life.
They've occasionally broken from tradition, opting out of the Sandringham Christmas celebration in the past and enrolling their children in co-ed schools outside of London, rather than following the usual royal school path.
Despite their royal status, William has long emphasized the importance of giving his children a grounded upbringing.
"I want George to grow up in a real, living environment," he reportedly once told British Q. "I don't want him growing up behind palace walls, he has to be out there. The media make it harder, but I will fight for them to have a normal life."
Still, not all traditions are being left behind. According to TheDaily Mail, Prince George is expected to follow in his father's footsteps and attend the prestigious all-boys Eton College in the coming years.
