A Milwaukee police officer was critically injured and another was hurt by gunfire when a suspect opened fire on them in alleyway, authorities said.

The officers, a 32-year-old and a 29-year-old whose names were not shared publicly by authorities, were responding to a call about shots fired on June 26 when they faced gunfire at about 9:30 p.m., police said, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network. They were unable to return fire, police said.

The 32-year-old was in critical condition after suffering several gunshot wounds to his upper arm, and at least one round struck his chest and caused "severe internal injuries, including to his heart," according to the Milwaukee Police Association, the union representing the city's officers. He went through surgery, the union said. The 29-year-old was shot in the foot and back and will undergo surgery, the union said. The 29-year-old officer's injuries were non-fatal, the Milwaukee Police Department said.

Both had over six years of experience serving as police officers, the department said.

Police searched through the night for a suspect and made an arrest at about 2:15 a.m. on June 27, the Milwaukee Police Department said in a news release. The suspect was not identified and police said criminal charges will be presented to the district attorney in the coming days.

"As a stark reminder, the Milwaukee Police Department will not tolerate harm to our community or our officers," the police department said in a statement. "Individuals inflicting harm against the public and our officers will be held accountable."

The police shooting is at least the third time an officer has been shot in Milwaukee this year, the Journal Sentinel reported.
