There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solve today's puzzle before reading further! Mixed Results

Constructor: Dennis McCartney

Editor: Amie Walker

July 1, 2025Random Thoughts & Interesting Things -

JAPAN (8A: Country made up of 14,125 islands) JAPAN is an island country that extends along the Pacific coast of Asia. Four of its 14,125 islands, are considered "main islands." Those are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The islands of JAPAN stretch across a distance of 1,900 miles. Approximately 260 of the islands are inhabited.

GURU (14A: Sikh spiritual leader) Sikhism is a religion that originated in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent in the late 15th century. GURU Nanak, born in 1469, was the founder of Sikhism. He was succeeded by nine other GURUs. The tenth GURU affirmed the sacred scripture, Adi Granth, as his successor, ending the line of human GURUs. The central religious scripture of Sikhism, GURU Granth Sahib, is regarded as the final, sovereign, and eternal living GURU.

IOWAN (18A: Person from Des Moines) Greetings from an IOWAN who lived in Des Moines (the state's capital) many years ago, but now lives elsewhere in the state.

ARIANA (22A: "Yes, And?" singer Grande) ARIANA Grande released "Yes, And?" in January 2024. The song debuted at the top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart. The lyrics of "Yes, And?" focus on self-confidence, and address negative press Ariana Grande received during 2020 to 2023.

SIDE (23A: A Mobius strip only has one) I find Mobius strips fascinating. You can make a model of a Mobius strip by taking a long, narrow piece of paper and giving one end a half twist before taping the ends together into a loop. To demonstrate that the Mobius strip only has one SIDE, draw a line down the center of it. Without lifting your pencil or pen, you will meet your starting point. If a MOBIUS STRIP is cut in half (along the line you drew down the center) it will result in a long loop with two twists in it, rather than two loops.

CERAMIC (30A: Like some tile) We just saw CERAMIC in the puzzle two days ago clued as [Made of fired clay]. When I wrote about it then, I commented that I don't usually consider bricks as being CERAMIC even though they fit the definition. I am familiar with CERAMIC tile, though, as we have a lot of it in our house.

POGO (39A: ___ stick (bouncing toy)) Several years ago (while writing a clue for POGO in a puzzle I was constructing), I learned about extreme POGO. Now that's what I think of anytime POGO sticks are mentioned. I am not a coordinated person (my family frowns on my use of ladders...), so I don't think extreme POGO is in my future. It's fun to watch though.

CALYPSO (41A: Harry Belafonte genre) I just mentioned Harry Belafonte three days ago while writing about the song "Hava Nagila," so it was fun to see his name pop up in the puzzle today. Harry Belafonte (1927-2023) was a singer, actor and activist whose third studio album was titled CALYPSO (1956). He is credited with popularizing CALYPSO music, a style of music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early to mid-19th century. Harry Belafonte's nickname was the "King of CALYPSO."

MOD (45A: Online admin who might wield the "banhammer") "Banhammer" is an informal term used to refer to the power of a MOD (short for moderator) to block a user from participating in an online community. The term is especially popular in the online gaming community.

SRY (48A: "oops, my b") and OUCH (49A: "That hurt!") These consecutive clues seem to go together.

ALOO (58A: ___ tikki (potato snack)) I will occasionally give the reminder that ALOO is a South Asian word for potatoes and is often seen in the names of dishes that contain potatoes. I give these reminders for clues such as this. If a dish contains potatoes, it's quite possible the name of the dish includes the word ALOO, as is the case with ALOO tikki, a croquette made of potatoes, peas, and spices.

SLIP (61A: Freudian ___) A Freudian SLIP is an error that in psychoanalysis is attributed to a subdued unconscious wish or thought. One time when I was in college, a friend of mine dressed up as a Freudian SLIP for Halloween. She wore a SLIP and pinned a picture of Freud onto it.

LINDT (63A: Swiss chocolate brand) Just highlighting this to say that LINDT chocolate truffles are some of my favorite chocolates.

NASCAR (1D: Daytona 500 org.) The headquarters of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) are located in Daytona Beach, Florida. Since 1959, the Daytona 500 has been held annually at the Daytona International Speedway.

PAW (10D: Cat's foot) My cat, Willow, will sometimes place her PAW on my arm. I like to imagine that it's to remind me I am hers.

Willow -

AMA (11D: Reddit Q&A) Reddit is an online social site for news aggregation and discussion. AMA stands for "ask me anything," a genre of interactive interviews that are especially popular on Reddit.

NIN (12D: Author Anais) I wrote about Anais NIN a couple of months ago.

ODE (21D: "___ to Our Ocean" (Amanda Gorman poem)) Amanda Gorman wrote "ODE to Our Ocean" in 2020 for World Ocean Day. It's always a good day to be reminded of this powerful poem and to take a few moments to read it.

CHE (33D: Activist Guevera) CHE Guevara was a major figure in the Cuban Revolution. He served as Minister of Industries of Cuba from 1961-1965, and was executed in Bolivia in 1967.

POP ART (42D: Andy Warhol's genre) POP ART includes imagery and themes from popular culture. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was a leading figure in the POP ART movement. One of his most famous works is Campbell's Soup Cans a 32-painting series in which each painting depicted a can of Campbell's soup, representing each of the varieties offered by the company at the time.

DALLAS (47D: Texas home of the WNBA's Wings) The DALLAS Wings are a WNBA team founded in 1998. They have won three WNBA Championships, in 2003, 2006, and 2008.

SOIL (54D: Makeup of some beds) Think garden beds here, rather than beds that you sleep in.

ASL (55D: Language in the film "CODA") The 2021 movie, CODA, stars Emilia Jones as Ruby Rossi, a hearing "child of deaf adults" (CODA). Sian Heder, who wrote and directed CODA, learned ASL (American Sign Language) while working on the movie, and about 40% of the screenplay was in ASL. Emilia Jones also learned ASL before the filming of CODA started. CODA won an Academy Award for Best Picture.

A couple of other clues I especially enjoyed:

FEDORA (51A: Hat for a film noir detective)

SUSHI CHEFS (7D: Culinary artists who might punnily say "That's how we roll!)

Crossword Puzzle Theme Synopsis -

CULTURE SHOCK (19A: experience for some travelers in new surroundings)

RULES THE ROOST (35A: Has complete control)

APPLE STRUDEL (53A: Fruit-filled Viennese pastry)

MIXED RESULTS: Each theme answer contains an anagram of the word RESULT: CULTURE SHOCK, RULES THE ROOST, and APPLE STRUDEL.

The word MIXED in the title is a hint that this might be a hidden anagram theme. Indeed, each of the three theme answers contains the MIXED up letters of the word RESULT: LTURE/S, RULES/T, and LE/STRU. Congratulations to Dennis McCartney making a USA Today crossword debut! Thank you, Dennis, for this enjoyable puzzle.

Will Smith is keeping the west wild.

In honor of Wild Wild West 's 26th anniversary, Smith, 56, shared a cheeky still from the film in which he was clad in nothing but a strategically placed cowboy hat. The actor captioned the June 30 Instagram photo: "Wild Wild West came out 26 years ago today- sorry this is the only photo I could find."

One user wrote in the comments, "My favorite scene. Explanation not needed." Another wrote, "You were one of my early childhood crushes. Well done on on building a career that truly had and still has an impact. 💜✨"

American actor Will Smith as Captain James West in a scene from the film 'Wild Wild West

Wild Wild West was released in 1999. The film, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, was loosely based on the 1960s CBS show of the same name created by Michael Garrison. The film followed two secret service agents (Smith and Kevin Kline) as they protect President Ulysses S. Grant from the growing unpredictable threats of the American western frontier.

Smith once referred to Wild Wild West as his worst film. In a 2021 interview with GQ, the actor answered a question about what he thinks is his best film and his worst film. He said, "For the best, I think it's a tie between the first Men in Black and Pursuit of Happiness. For different reasons, those are the two almost-perfect movies."

As for the worst, he said, "I don't know, Wild Wild West is a thorn in my side."

"To see myself in chaps… I don't like it," he added, laughing.

The choice to star in Wild Wild West came the same time he was offered the role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith turned down the role in the film, which turned out to be a mega-hit, to do the steampunk Western action comedy. Keanu Reeves went on to star in The Matrix in his place.

Landmark EU tech rules holding back innovation, Google says

Foo Yun CheeJuly 1, 2025 at 7:07 AM

By Foo Yun Chee

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Alphabet's Google will on Tuesday warn EU antitrust regulators and its critics that landmark European Union rules aimed at reining in Big Tech are hampering innovation to the detriment of European users and businesses.

The U.S. tech giant will also urge regulators to give more detailed guidance to help it comply with the rules, and ask its critics to provide evidence of costs and benefits to prove their case.

Google is under pressure to address charges under the EU's Digital Markets Act that it favours its own services such as Google Shopping, Google Hotels and Google Flights over rivals. The charges may result in fines of as much as 10% of its global annual revenue.

Earlier this month, Google proposed more changes to its search results to better showcase rival products, but critics say these still do not ensure a level playing field.

"We remain genuinely concerned about real world consequences of the DMA, which are leading to worse online products and experiences for Europeans," Google's lawyer Clare Kelly will tell a workshop organised by the European Commission to give Google critics the opportunity to seek clarifications.

She will say changes implemented by Google to date after discussions with the Commission and its critics have resulted in European users paying more for travel tickets as they cannot directly access airline sites, according to a copy of her speech seen by Reuters.

Kelly will also say European airlines, hotels and restaurants have reported up to a 30% loss in direct booking traffic, while users have complained about clunky workarounds.

Google's other lawyer, Oliver Bethell, will ask regulators to spell out in detail what the company needs to do, and critics to come up with hard evidence.

"If we can understand precisely what compliance looks like, not just in theory, but taking account of on the ground experience, we can launch compliant services quickly and confidently across the EEA," he will say.

The EEA is the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

"We need help identifying the areas where we should focus. That means bringing real evidence of costs and benefits that we can take account of with the Commission," Bethell said.

The day-long workshop starts at 0700 GMT.

Bryan Kohberger to plead guilty to murder in Idaho student stabbings to avoid death penalty

1 / 5Four Killed University of IdahoFILE - A private security officer sits in a vehicle on Jan. 3, 2023, in front of the house in Moscow, Idaho, where four University of Idaho students were killed in November 2022. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren, File)

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Bryan Kohberger has agreed to plead guilty to murdering four University of Idaho students as part of a deal to avoid the death penalty, an attorney for one victim's family said.

Shanon Gray, an attorney representing the family of Kaylee Goncalves, confirmed Monday that prosecutors informed the families of the deal by email and letter earlier in the day, and that his clients were upset about it.

"We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho," Goncalves' family wrote in a Facebook post. "They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected."

A change of plea hearing was set for Wednesday, but the family has asked prosecutors to delay it to give them more time to travel to Boise, Gray said. Kohberger's trial was set for August in Boise, where it was moved following pretrial publicity in rural northern Idaho.

Kohberger, 30, is accused in the stabbing deaths of Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen at a rental home near campus in Moscow, Idaho, early on Nov. 13, 2022. Autopsies showed the four were all likely asleep when they were attacked, some had defensive wounds and each was stabbed multiple times.

At the time, Kohberger was a criminal justice graduate student at Washington State University, about 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) west of the University of Idaho. He was arrested in Pennsylvania, where his parents lived, weeks later. Investigators said they matched his DNA to genetic material recovered from a knife sheath found at the crime scene.

No motive has emerged for the killings, nor is it clear why the attacker spared two roommates who were in the home. Authorities have said cellphone data and surveillance video shows that Kohberger visited the victims' neighborhood at least a dozen times before the killings.

The murders shocked the small farming community of about 25,000 people, which hadn't had a homicide in about five years, and prompted a massive hunt for the perpetrator. That included an elaborate effort to track down a white sedan that was seen on surveillance cameras repeatedly driving by the rental home, to identify Kohberger as a possible suspect through the use of genetic genealogy and to pinpoint his movements the night of the killings through cellphone data.

In a court filing, Kohberger's lawyers said he was on a long drive by himself around the time the four were killed.

In the letter to families, obtained by ABC News, prosecutors said Kohberger's lawyers approached them seeking to reach a plea deal. The defense team had previously made unsuccessful efforts to have the death penalty stricken as a possible punishment, including arguing that Kohberger's autism diagnosis made him less culpable.

The prosecutors said they met with available family members last week before deciding to make Kohberger an offer.

"This resolution is our sincere attempt to seek justice for your family," the letter said. "This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and the other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction, appeals. Your viewpoints weighed heavily in our decision-making process, and we hope that you may come to appreciate why we believe this resolution is in the best interest of justice."

In a Facebook post, the Goncalves family wrote that Kaylee's 18-year-old sister, Aubrie, had been unable to attend the meeting with prosecutors. But she shared her concerns in a written statement.

"Bryan Kohberger facing a life in prison means he would still get to speak, form relationships, and engage with the world," Aubrie Goncalves wrote. "Meanwhile, our loved ones have been silenced forever. That reality stings more deeply when it feels like the system is protecting his future more than honoring the victims' pasts."

In Idaho, judges may reject plea agreements, though such moves are rare. If a judge rejects a plea agreement, the defendant is allowed to withdraw the guilty plea.

Earlier Monday, a Pennsylvania judge had ordered that three people whose testimony was requested by defense attorneys would have to travel to Idaho to appear at Kohberger's trial.

The defense subpoenas were granted regarding a boxing trainer who knew Kohberger as a teenager, a childhood acquaintance of Kohberger's and a third man whose significance was not explained.

A gag order has largely kept attorneys, investigators and others from speaking publicly about the investigation or trial.

 • Adrian Grenier Won't Be Back as His Controversial Boyfriend Character in "The Devil Wears Prada" Sequel: Report

Madison E. GoldbergJuly 1, 2025 at 3:53 AM

Barry Wetcher/20th Century Fox/Kobal/Shutterstock

The Devil Wears Prada anniversary

Adrian Grenier will reportedly not return for The Devil Wears Prada sequel

Grenier played Nate Cooper, the boyfriend to Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway)

The actor previously agreed with fans that his character was "the villain" of the original film

Adrian Grenier will not be serving up grilled cheese in the upcoming sequel to The Devil Wears Prada.

Grenier, 48, played Nate Cooper, the bumbling college boyfriend turned Boston sous-chef to Runway magazine assistant Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway). The Entourage star will not return for the sequel to the hit 2006 film, per Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the news.

PEOPLE has reached out to Grenier's reps for comment.

The news follows 20th Century Studios' announcement on Monday, June 30 that production on The Devil Wears Prada 2 has already begun.

Actors Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna are expected to return. Streep earned one of the original film's two Oscar nominations, with the other going to costume designer Patricia Field. Multiple outlets have reported that Kenneth Branagh is joining the cast.

The 2006 movie was adapted from former Vogue assistant Lauren Weisberger's book of the same name. Weisberger worked for former Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, who recently stepped down from her position at the magazine after 37 years.

The film sees recent college graduate Andy (Hathaway) thrust into the high-intensity world of fashion, as she juggles her humble past with her bright future working as an assistant to the cold and particular Miranda Priestly (Streep). While Andy is at this crossroads, Nate (Grenier) repeatedly criticizes her changing lifestyle and journalistic aspirations.

He and Andy ultimately end their relationship when she misses his birthday party in favor of work obligations. In retrospect, both fans and Grenier himself have asserted that Nate may be the actual villain of The Devil Wears Prada, and not the titular devil herself.

Evan Agostini/Getty

Meryl Streep, Adrian Grenier and Anne Hathaway at the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada

In a 2021 oral history reunion with the cast and crew, Grenier told Entertainment Weekly that he has come around to realizing his character could be considered the villain.

"All those memes that came out were shocking to me. It hadn't occurred to me until I started to really think about it, and perhaps it was because I was as immature as Nate was at the time, and in many ways he's very selfish and self-involved, it was all about him, he wasn't extending himself to support Andy in her career."

— sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

He continued, "At the end of the day, it's just a birthday, right? It's not the end of the world. I might've been as immature as him at the time, so I personally couldn't see his shortcomings. But after time to reflect and much deliberation, I've come to realize the truth in that perspective."

A release date for the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada has yet to be announced, but multiple outlets reported in May that it is expected to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.

Cast of ABC's 'Abbott Elementary'

Abbott Elementary was renewed for an impressive fifth season in January, but Quinta Brunson and some of the cast have started to wonder about life out of school.

"We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans," Brunson, who created and stars in the show, told Bustle in a new interview. "That being said, I have cast members who would love to pursue other projects, and our show is very time-consuming. We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things."

She continued, "Right now, I'm receiving scripts, and waiting for that moment that feels like, 'Oh man, this is exactly what I've been looking for.' Abbott has been so successful, and I want to use that success to get other people's projects off the ground."

For example, she told the outlet, "I'm always interested in playing against type. I think that's any actor's dream. Right now my type is 'Janine' and 'teacher.' I'm looking forward to moving away from that a little bit."

The ABC comedy, which debuted in 2021 and was inspired by Brunson's mother's 40 years as a public school teacher, focuses on the staff at an underfunded public school in Philadelphia. Brunson costars on the Emmy-winning show with a cast that includes Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter, Janelle James, William Stanford Davis, and Chris Perfetti.

Brunson explained her mantra and approach to being the face of the show to Bustle.

"People used to tell me at the beginning of this that the No. 1 on the call sheet sets the tone, and the producer sets the tone — and I'm both of those roles," she said. "I understand now, after doing this for four years, how important it was that I set the tone that I did when we first started."

ABC/Gilles Mingasson

Quinta Brunson as Janine on 'Abbott Elementary'

"Sometimes it's as simple as I'm the first one in the morning," she added, "and the way I carry myself in the morning can determine how the rest of the set runs, not only as an actor, but as the creator of the show. I try to come in with a good attitude and a positive attitude, and it's not hard to do. I'm very excited to go to work and appreciative of my cast and crew and naturally want the morale up."

A premiere date for season 5 hasn't officially been announced, but the main cast is expected to return. The first four seasons can be streamed now on Hulu.

In 1995, he welcomed twin sons Julian and Aaron, 29, with his former girlfriend, model and actress Toukie Smith.
At the time, the Zero Day actor and executive producer noted that he doesn't watch as many movies as he should because he's busy watching the news or TV shows with Gia.

"I just want to keep up, but I watch current events, if you will news [and] stuff like that," he told Mills. "Now I watch, with my little girl, The Wiggles and Ms. Rachel."

"I didn't know of them until I started seeing them and my daughter loves to watch them," he added. "But they're great!"

Shortly after welcoming his youngest daughter, De Niro reflected on being a father of seven.

While chatting with Access Hollywood at the premiere of his new film About My Father in May 2023, the actor opened up about being a dad and shared his wisdom about being a good father.

"Sometimes I don't think people really know what being a good father is, you know you have a responsibility, but it's a mystery, it's a lot of excitement but scary and you do your best," he said.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A jury was deliberating for a second day Tuesday in the triple murder trial of an Australian woman accused of killing her estranged husband's relatives by deliberately serving them poisonous mushrooms for lunch.

The jurors who began deliberating Monday are sequestered, a rarity in Australia that reflects public and media fervor about the case against Erin Patterson, with several news outlets publishing live blogs that covered every moment of the two-month trial. The jurors will remain secluded until they reach a unanimous decision on the charges of murder and attempted murder.

Three of Patterson's four lunch guests — her parents-in-law Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson — died in the hospital after the 2023 meal, at which she served individual beef Wellington pastries containing death cap mushrooms. The fourth, Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson, became gravely ill but survived.

Patterson, 50, told the trial she didn't deliberately poison her guests and must have accidentally mixed up store-bought and wild mushrooms, which she had foraged herself without knowing they were death caps. She also said she ate the mushrooms but didn't get as sick because she threw up soon after the lunch due to an eating disorder.

Prosecutors in the case, which has gripped Australia for two years, said the accused woman researched, foraged and served the mushrooms deliberately and lied to investigators to cover her tracks. Patterson accepted she had disposed of a food dehydrator after the fatal meal and reset her phone multiple times.

The prosecution said she lied about having a dire medical diagnosis to ensure her guests attended the lunch, cooked individual pastries to avoid poisoning herself, and faked symptoms to make it look as though she fell ill, too.

Prosecutors didn't offer a motive but suggested a deteriorating relationship between the accused and her estranged husband, Simon Patterson, as well as her exasperation with her former in-laws. Simon Patterson was invited to the fatal lunch but didn't go.

Patterson would face life in prison if she is convicted.
