Judgement day for Starmer over Mandelson vetting scandal

Sir Keir Starmeris facing the toughest 48 hours of his premiershipas he battles to save his jobamid growing outrage over the handling ofPeter Mandelson’s failed security vetting.

The Independent US

With his reputation on the line, theprime ministerwill on Monday seek to convince the Commons that he was not aware thatUK Security Vetting (UKSV) had advised that Mandelson should be denied clearanceto become the UK’s ambassador to the US.

After what is expected to be a mauling from MPs, Sir Keir will be under further scrutiny on Tuesday when SirOlly Robbins, sacked as the Foreign Office permanent secretary last week for continuing Mandelson’s appointment despite vetting concerns, will appear before a powerful group of MPs to explain his department’s role in the saga.

The former civil servant’s allies believe he could undermine the prime minister’s version of events.

They claim Sir Olly is furious about his dismissal and is understood to have taken legal advice. Senior former civil servants have thrown their support behind the ousted mandarin, with former Foreign Office permanent secretary Lord Simon McDonald and ex-deputy cabinet secretary Helen MacNamaraclaiming he was “thrown under a bus”to save the prime minister.

On Friday night, No 10 released a readout of a meeting between Sir Keir and senior civil servants that appeared to corroborate that the prime minister only found out on Tuesday that Lord Mandelson was cleared for his role as Britain's representative in Washington against the advice of security officials.

The prime minister has said he was "absolutely furious", and described the failure to inform him as "staggering".

But Downing Street’s insistence it was not aware of the issue is under the spotlight after it was revealed thatThe Independentapproached No 10 about claims Mandelson had not cleared his security vetting last September, when the disgraced peer was sacked from hisUS ambassadorjob.

A WhatsApp exchange betweenThe Independentand Downing Street’s former director of communications,Tim Allan, from the time – in which Mr Allan responds that “vetting was done by FCDO in the normal way” – has been described as a “smoking gun” that makes it impossible to deny No 10 had not been made aware of concerns.

The revelation has thrown a question mark over whether Sir Keir misled parliament in February when he told MPs “due process was followed” and that Mandelson had cleared vetting.

The WhatsApp exchange with Mr Allan was presented to tech secretary Liz Kendall, a key ally of the prime minister, by Trevor Phillips on his Sunday morning political show on Sky News.

She told Sir Trevor: “You will have to ask those questions to Tim Allan. I’m not going to speak on behalf of him and I don’t think it is fair that I do.”

Liz Kendall is confronted with Whatsapp messages between The Independent and Downing street in September (Sky News)

When it was pointed out that Mr Allan was “responding for the prime minister to a journalist”, Ms Kendall replied: “All ministers were told was that he (Mandelson) had got developed vetting status. We were not told that the Foreign Office took that decision whereas the UK security vetting advised against.”

But former foreign secretary Sir James Cleverly, who on Saturday said it was "inconceivable" that the prime minister and David Lammy were unaware of any problem with the vetting, said he believes the Whatsapp exchange “is the smoking gun which shows the prime minister may not be telling the truth”.

Green leader Zack Polanski added: “This is as close to a smoking gun I think as we're going to get.”

On Sir Trevor’s show former chancellor Nadhim Zahawi said: “If David Maddox atThe Independentasked this question seven months ago there is no way, and I have been in the room, that the head of comms for the prime minister wouldn’t have at least had the curiosity to say ‘where did this story come from? How did he fail? And why don’t we know about it?’

Sir James Cleverly has raised doubts that Starmer was ignorant of the vetting issue (PA)

“There is no way that the cabinet secretary wouldn’t know about this failure. They may not have the details, but at least be told ‘by the way we have got a problem, he has been appointed but he has failed developed vetting afterwards’.

“They clearly had got the memo from the PM or (former chief of staff) Morgan McSweeney that this appointment is being made [so] don’t question it.”

A former senior civil servant, who dealt with a number of major crises which threatened to bring down previous governments, said the text exchange “points to some pretty serious dysfunction in the system”.

They added: ”If the Cabinet Office knew seven months beforehand and they just didn't either didn't tell the PM, or told the PM and he chose to ignore it, then that firstly that lets Olly off the hook completely, and secondly it raises some much more fundamental questions about the way the centre is working.”

Kemi Badenoch, who has called for Sir Keir to resign over the issue, is expected to ask about the WhatsApp messages on Monday.

Meanwhile the prime minister is facing growing pressure to consider his position from within his own party, with senior figures from the left and right calling on him to step down.

Lord Maurice Glasman, founder of the influential Blue Labour on the right, toldThe Telegraph: “He cannot conceivably continue as a credible prime minister any longer. And that’s all because he cannot say ‘I made a mistake, I’m sorry’.”

Jeremy Corbyn’s former shadow chancellor John McDonnell added: “The Starmer/ Mandelson crisis is just a symptom of toxic factionalism in Labour created by the dominance of the McSweeney/Mandelson Labour Together faction.”

Lord Mandelson, a political appointment rather than a career diplomat, was sacked from his Washington role last September when more details emerged about his relationship with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019.

Sir Keir was already under fire over the decision to give Lord Mandelson the job, despite it being known that his dealings with Epstein continued after the financier's conviction for child sex offences.

Anne Hathaway Opens Up About Why Adam Shulman Is a 'Dream Partner to Me'

From her breakout role as Princess Mia Thermopolis in 2001’sThe Princess Diariesto her Oscar-winning performance as Fantine in 2012’sLes Misérables, Anne Hathaway has been a household name in Hollywood for decades. But Hathaway has made a point to keep her personal life private—including her 13-year marriage to Adam Shulman.

Hathaway surprised fans when she exchanged vows with Shulman, then her boyfriend of four years, in aprivate Big Sur, California ceremonyback in September 2012. She was just 29 then.

Now, over a decade and two children later, the couple remains strong, committed, and largely out of the spotlight. So who is Hathaway’s longtime partner? From Shulman’s career to his history with Hathaway, here is everything you need to know about the man who stole the actress’s heart.

Hathaway sensed she’d marry Shulman when she first met him.

Shulman and Hathaway met at the Palm Springs Film Festival in 2008. Hathaway later toldHarper’s Bazaar UKin its February 2013 cover story that she told a mutual friend of theirs at the time, “I’m going to marry that man. I think he thought I was a little nuts, which I am a bit, but I’m also nice.”

When asked if she faced any trust issues when they first started dating (Hathaway’s last ex Raffaello Follierihad been arrestedfor fraud), Hathaway was honest with the British publication. She said: “I was just very honest with him. I knew from the second I met him that he was the love of my life. I also knew that I couldn’t have met him at a worse time... I took my trust out for a ridiculous joyride with him. [I told him,] ‘I believe, because I need to believe, that what just happened to me was the exception and not the rule, and that people are good and you are a good person, because I feel it. And so I am not in a good place right now, but I’m going with this.’ And he has never hurt me. And I was right. It was scary. But as the days wore on it kept on getting better and better. I found that the love I found for him made me more trusting of everyone, and the more I started to see who I had become. I had lost track of myself during those years and I actually started to see who I had become and that’s... that’s when things got tricky and ugly. Having to forgive myself.”

The couple tied the knot in a low-key ceremony.

Hathaway and Shulman had a very California wedding weekend. According toPeople, more than 150 guests were invited to Big Sur in September 2012. The celebrations started Friday, with a rehearsal dinner at the Ventana Inn and Spa. The ceremony took place in a nearby estate. As far as decor goes, the couple kept it classy and rustic, with decor inspired by nature, a source toldPeople.

Hathaway says being with Shulman changed her for the better.

Hathaway credits her husband for many changes in her life, including her world view. “He changed my ability to be in the world comfortably,” Hathaway toldELLEduring an interview for its Women in Washington April 2017 issue. Hathaway said she once cared too much about other people’s opinions of her. “How hard was I trying?” the actress asked the interviewer as they read a transcript of their past interviews.

But Shulman helped her grow her own confidence: “I’m a different human than I was then,” the actress said. “I think the accepted narrative now is that we, as women, don’t need anybody. But I need my husband. His unique and specific love has changed me.”

Shulman is a “spectacular” dad, according to Hathaway.

Almost four years after the couple tied the knot, they welcomed their first son, Jonathan Rosebank Shulman. He was born in March 2016. Two months after she gave birth, Hathaway praised Shulman’s parenting skills: “As was to be expected, he is spectacular,” shetoldEntertainment Tonight.

The Oscar-nominated actress later surprised her fans in the summer of 2019 when she shared a rare personalInstagrampost announcing her second pregnancy. “It’s not for a movie... #2,” the actress shared with her followers. The couple’s second child, a boy named Jack, was born in November of that same year.

He is a jewelry designer and used his skills to craft Hathaway’s engagement ring.

Ever wondered who designed Hathaway’semerald-shaped diamondengagement ring? It was Shulman. The New York native is a jewelry designer—and he even has his own jewelry brand called James Banks Design. According to the brand’s website, the pieces are handmade from recycled material in Southern California. “Through initial discussion, pieces are dreamt of, invented, designed and then methodically brought to life,” thebrand’s websitesays.

He is a film producer.

In 2014, Shulman collaborated with Hathaway to produceSong One,an indie drama film starring the actress. “At first, I was curious how it would go. People always say don't work with your spouse. But I loved working with him,” HathawaytoldPeople.“He’s really good at this, and he’s a wonderful producer. And I feel like I actually learned a lot from him in the process.”

He’s no stranger to the acting world.

Shulman graduated with a B.A. in theater from Brown University. According toIMDB, he has five acting credits under his belt, including his role as Paul O’Bannon in the NBC showAmerican Dreams.

He has received the seal of approval from Emily Blunt, one of Hathaway’s close friends.

Hathaway counts herThe Devil Wears Pradaco-star Emily Blunt among her closest friends in Hollywood. And Blunt adores Hathaway and Shulman together. The British actresstold ELLE in March 2017 thatShulman “has been Annie’s greatest achievement in many ways. He’s sort of home away from the storm of fame that she lives with. Being with the right person has been a major part of her growth, but I don’t think she cares as much anymore. That’s something both of us feel now: Who fucking cares? You get to a point where the stuff that you used to sweat just doesn’t matter. It’s a great place to be.”

At the beginning of the pandemic, Schulman maintained a sense of humor about Hathaway's anxiety-driven habits.

Hathawayappeared onJimmy Kimmel Livein October 2020, during which the host asked how she and her family approached safety at the beginning of the pandemic. Hathaway told Kimmel, laughing, “It’s so embarrassing. I don’t know what I was thinking, but you know those little magical thoughts you have that keep you going, that keep your anxiety at bay, and it’s like, ‘As long as I do this thing, everything’s gonna be fine?’ So I decided that it would keep my family safe if I put tape around all of our light switches and our doorknobs because...these are the most oft-touched surfaces, and we’ll just remember to wash our hands and put Lysol on them. And I remember I did this and my husband came upstairs, and he saw what I’d been working on, and he was like, ‘What? Why?’...And he continued to make fun of me.”

She also mentioned how “wearing a really sensible pair of heels” inexplicably made her feel safer. “[That feeling] lasted exactly five hours,” she says. “And, again, it gave my husband—my husband teased me about it yesterday.” When Kimmel asked if Schulman did anything strange during the early days of the pandemic, Hathaway responded, shaking her head, “Ugh. He’s so perfect. I know I shouldn’t say that; it’s too much pressure. But he’s a really easygoing guy, so he usually hits the bullseye pretty right. I’m the one that spins out a little bit. I’m very lucky I married him.”

They aren’t sure if they want to have another child.

During the same interview with Kimmel, Hathaway revealed that she hasn’t decided if she and Schulman will have another baby. “Yeah, I don't know,” she said. “I don’t know. Like, some minutes I'm like, ‘Yes, absolutely,’ and some minutes I’m like, “The world scares me too much,’ and I think I’ve got two healthy ones and that feels really great. So I don’t really know yet.”

In 2022, forInterview Mag, model Bella Hadid asked Hathaway about it again, saying, “So Anne, this is the big talk of the town. Hundreds pack Montevideo’s plaza as La Rueda de Candombe caps a breakout run

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) — Every Monday night in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, hundreds gather around a table in a public square, drawn by the pulse of drums, guitars and voices carrying aloft a centuries-old rhythm.

Uruguay Rueda de Candombe

La Rueda de Candombe began as a casual jam session between friends, but has rapidly evolved into one of Uruguay’s most talked-about musical events, going from local street corners in the capital to theCannes Film Festival.

“What started as something among friends became visible without us intending it,” said Uruguayan producer Caleb Amado, one of the founders of La Rueda de Candombe.

Sunday's gathering featured this season's final performance of Rueda de Candombe at Montevideo's Plaza de España, bringing together six musicians celebratingcandombe— a vibrant musical genre at the heart of this South American country's identity and one recognized internationally as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

An African tradition central to Uruguay's identity

In the fall of 2024, Amado and his friend Rolo Fernández traveled to Rio de Janeiro, trading Montevideo’s chill for warm nights in some of the Brazilian city’s most iconic bars. There, they immersed themselves in “rodas” — informal music circles where performers gather around a table to sing and play while standing audiences look on.

Inspired by those gatherings, the pair returned home and formed La Rueda de Candombe with four other musicians.

Like its Brazilian inspiration, the group performs around a table. But the sound is distinctly Uruguayan: drums, guitar and accordion driving the rhythms of candombe, a genre rooted in African traditions brought to the region in the 18th century and now central to Uruguay’s identity.UNESCOhas recognized candombe as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In the beginning, nearly a hundred people squeezed into Santa Catalina, a small bar on a quiet corner in Montevideo, to hear them play. Within months, growing crowds pushed the performances into nearby Plaza España. As their popularity took hold, vans filled with tourists began to arrive.

A cultural and political expression

Despite Montevideo’s abundance of public spaces, including a 14-mile-long (22-kilometer) waterfront promenade, street performances are far less common than in cities likeBuenos Airesor Rio de Janeiro.

Social media helped amplify the buzz, drawing prominent artists. The group has performed withUruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexlerat Montevideo’s iconic Centenario Stadium and recorded an album. In 2025, they were invited to represent Uruguay at the Cannes Film Festival, which hosts cultural showcases alongside its film program.

Since the 18th century, candombe has remained a vital element of Uruguayan identity. It emerged from Plaza España — the historic landing site where enslaved people from Africa used the beat of the drum to sustain their rituals.

The music is built around three types of drums — chico, repique and piano — and reaches its peak during carnival each February, when dozens of musical troupes called comparsas parade through the streets.

By the mid-20th century, candombe had evolved, blending with jazz and popular music in a style known as “candombe canción.” It became a fixture of social gatherings — much like the Rueda — and also served as a form of cultural and political expression during the 1960s and 1970s.

As the colder months approach, Amado and Fernández plan to stay in Montevideo. The Rueda isn’t slowing down, they say, it is preparing new projects, including expanding into other public squares across the city.

Thousands ordered to evacuate homes in Wellington after worst rainfall ever recorded

Wellingtondeclared astate of emergencyon Monday after torrential rainfall battered New Zealand’s capital city overnight.

The Independent US A flooded road in Wellington, New Zealand, on 10 April 2026 (Reuters)

Residents of low-lying areas were asked to evacuate asflash floodsand landslides led to the closure of roads.

Wellington mayor Andrew Little said he had “never known anything like” the intense rainfall overnight. He said the city received 77mm of rain in less than an hour, the heaviest on record.

“You’ll be aware there has been serious downpour in Wellington, particularly in the southern suburbs overnight, very serious flooding in many places," he said on social media. "A lot of that flooding was the stormwater system being overwhelmed.”

“So much of it is dissipating at the moment,” he added, “but there’s still surface flooding around places."

The mayor urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel. “So this is a day to be really careful if you’re going out and about. If you can avoid travel, then please do so, but if you have to travel, then be very careful,” he said.

Emergency crews have already responded to over 150 weather-related callouts across the region, including flooding inside homes and landslides in suburbs like Newtown, Island Bay, and Kingston.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand has activated its regional coordination centre, ramping up the response.

“Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings," deputy national commander Megan Stiffler said.

“Do not try to walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater. Do not drive through floodwater. You are putting yourself at risk, and risking the lives of those who come to your rescue."

Some areas of the city reportedly received rainfall of up to 22mm in a short burst, with residents describing the deluge as the worst ever.

“This is a serious weather event with ongoing and evolving risks,” Wellington Civil Defence Emergency Management Group joint committee chair Anita Baker said.

“The state of emergency gives responders the powers and coordination needed to keep people safe, support evacuations where required, and manage impacts across the region.”

A man went missing from the suburb ‌of Karori, prompting a search in and around the flooded property where he was last found.

The heavy rain warning in Wellington and Wairarapa remains in place until Tuesday night, the local weather department said.

"Following the severe downpours over the last few days and the upcoming forecast rainfalls, there is an increased threat to life from dangerous river conditions, significant flooding and slips, with especially hazardous driving conditions," meteorologist Katie Lyons said. “Some roads may become impassable, isolating communities.”

The agency also warned of dangerous seas along Wellington’s south coast.

“The intense rainfall over the past few days has caused what is known as pluvial flooding. Cities like Wellington tend to have a high proportion of impermeable surfaces where water can’t soak into the ground. Instead the water relies on stormwater systems to dissipate. But when the quantity of water is more than a stormwater system can handle, the excess water will follow overland paths to flow towards the sea,” Dr Emily Lane, chief scientist, Flooding, Extreme Weather and Space Hazards, Earth Sciences NZ, said.

“Unfortunately, short and relatively localised but very intense events like those we have seen over the past few days are the type of event expected to increase the most with climate change.”

Several schools in the region have been closed.

“We've had flooding, slips and evacuations. There's another big weather system moving in this afternoon, so we need to just stay alert and be prepared,” the mayor said.

"I'm taking this very seriously, and so is our whole region."
