Sydney Sweeney back with new American Eagle ad after controversy – 'The world is curious'

It's time to say hello to "Syd."

USA TODAY

Months afterconversation – and controversy – erupted over Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle jeans ad campaign, the star is back for a newsummer spin on shortswith the retailer.

"What brand am I wearing?"Sweeneyasks in the commercial, posing in denim shorts against a blue sky backdrop, while smiling and playing with her hair. "Yeah, that one," she says, as the words "SYD FOR SHORT" flash across the screen.

It's a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fervor around the original jeans campaign, which was "born out of the idea that we wanted to work with the No. 1 It girl on the No. 1 jeans campaign of 2025," says Craig Brommers, American Eagle's chief marketing officer.

Sydney Sweeney stars in American Eagle's summer 2026 jean shorts ad campaign.

Syd exemplifies "the true self, the authentic person, the more casual version of thatSydney Sweeneypersona," Brommers says, and the collaboration is part of a "throughline" that "resonates" with consumers.

"Our American Eagle customer base really loved the duality" of the "Euphoria" star, 28, Brommers tells USA TODAY. "Yes, there is the actress on the red carpet with box office hits and Emmy-nominated performances on streaming shows. But there's also this very carefree, casual, real side, the girl-next-door side."

Sydney Sweeney jeans ad sparked backlash – and American Eagle success

Some retailers might have moved on after their first collab generated so much controversy.

Thefall campaign, released last July, was a play on "genes" and "jeans,"proclaiming that Sweeney "has great jeans." "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color," Sweeney said in the commercial. "My jeans are blue."

The internet pounced. Some said the commercial, with a conventionally attractive, white, thin, blonde woman with blue eyes at its center, was upholding Sweeney as the beauty standard. Others said the ad was regressive, highlighting a blonde bombshell and catering to the objectifying male gaze. And some argued out it had references to eugenics, or the belief that some genetic features are superior to others.

PresidentDonald Trumpand Vice PresidentJD Vanceboth added commentary. Sweeney "has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em Sydney!"Trump posted in August.

At the time, the company released a response that said, in part, "Great jeans look good on anyone." And the company CEO said in aWall Street Journalinterview, "We stand behind what we did."

Now, Brommers reveals just how thrilled the company was with the results. American Eagle Outfitters' stock jump by 22%. "A vast, vast, vast majority of Americans understood that the campaign was about jeans," Brommers says. "It was one story, her story."

Sweeney, in a NovemberGQinterview, said "the reaction definitely was a surprise," a sentiment she reiterated toPeoplein December, adding, "I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand. I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true."

The campaign "certainly drove jeans sales," Brommers says. "American Eagle has a store in all 50 states and during that campaign, we saw new customer acquisition grow in every single county in America. It is a fact that it was the most successful campaign in the history of the American Eagle brand."

Brommers says the ad had more than 55 billion impressions and was "the most talked about advertising campaign of the year, maybe of the decade – sometimes ChatGPT tells me of the century."

New American Eagle Sydney Sweeney campaign will 'turn the volume down'

Given those results, Brommers says American Eagle consumers were "clamoring for a new chapter to this partnership," focusing on the word "new."

"When we thought about what we could do next together, it wasn't about going backwards – it was about going forward," Brommers says.

"The world is curious and the world will be talking when we launch the campaign," Brommers says. "As we learned in the fall campaign, there is noise, but there are also facts as well, and we're excited to see where this campaign takes our brand."

The new ad aims to lean into joy and away from the previous campaign, Brommers says, though its language directly winks at the controversy.

"The real world is very noisy right now, and sometimes you want to turn the volume down, just be your true self and then live your life in American Eagle jean shorts in the summer," Brommers says.

What exactly is that "noise"? "It could mean anything," Brommers says, "It could be geopolitical. It could be the harsh realities of social media. Sometimes it could be pain that someone is going through in their own life, their mental health, whatever it is. I think that it's not for me to define someone's noise.

"This idea that you know yourself and you should embrace yourself and your beliefs and get out there and live your own life is a message that has been with the American Eagle brand for many years now. … In a particularly noisy moment out in the real world, we hope that this campaign brings that hope to to our audience."

Sydney Sweeney 'very involved' in American Eagle campaign

Brommers seems to suggest this won't be the last collaboration between American Eagle and their "It girl."

And for those wondering, Sweeney is "very involved," Brommers says.

"She's in there selecting shots and selecting angles and selecting story lines that she likes the most. So this is not about a payday. This is not about someone showing up and cashing a check," Brommers says. "This partnership is deep. It is authentic, and it's someone who is a very savvy business person and very understanding about her brand."

The new products, like the original, support theCrisis Text Line, which offers free, 24/7, confidential mental health support to anyone in need; 100% of the net proceeds from the shorts and jeans will be donated the nonprofit. The limited-edition denim styles feature a butterfly motif in honor of the philanthropic partnership, a cause close to Sweeney's heart.

"Being in the Sydney Sweeney business has been great for us," Brommers says, adding Sweeney "will always drive conversation" in a "partnership [that] has been so culturally defining."

Repeated downpours through at least the middle of the week will increase the risk of flooding, AccuWeather reported. The storms could impact travel on highways and cause delays at airports. A stretch of more than 1,600 miles could be impacted by severe weather this week, the outlet reported. Some communities could be hit by multiple rounds of storms and downpours, also elevating the risk of flash flooding.

Severe storms to last for multiple days

Forecasters said the storm system will drive multiple days of bad weather. The rounds of weather will bring storms and heavy rainfall as a "daily occurrence during the latter half of each day" in the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region, the National Weather Service said. The storms will generally move from west to east.

In the central and southern Plains, strong to severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours will also be active during the later part of the day and into the overnight hours, the weather service said. They will extend from Missouri northeast into the Midwest.

Exclusive-Chinese chipmaker YMTC plans new factories amid heightened US-Sino trade tensions, sources say

April 14 (Reuters) - Chinese chipmaker Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) aims to build two more factories in addition to one that will be completed this year, which will more than double its production capacity when all three are up ‌and running, people familiar with the plans said.

Reuters

China has been keen to wean itself from foreign technologies such as semiconductors - ‌a critical sector that the U.S. has sought to limit Chinese advancements in. This month, a cross-party group of U.S. politicians proposed imposing further restrictions nL6N40M0EZ on exports of chipmaking tools to China.

The three new plants will each have the capacity to produce 100,000 wafers per month when fully operational, said three sources who were not authorised to speak to media and declined to be identified.

Unlisted YMTC, China's largest maker of NAND flash memory chips that store data insmartphonesand computers, currently has two fabs which can produce a combined 200,000 wafers per month, they added.

Its ‌plans for the two new plants as well as details about the factory that is close to completion are being reported by Reuters for the first time.

YMTC, one of many Chinese companies that the U.S. restricts sales of goods to, did not respond to a request for comment.

STRONGER TIES WITH DOMESTIC SUPPLIERS

YMTC's third factory, which like its first two plants is located in Wuhan, should start operations late this year and be capable of producing 50,000 wafers per month by 2027, according to two of the sources.

The building has been completed and the company is currently installing equipment, they said, adding that more than 50% of equipment has been sourced from domestic companies including critical ‌tools used for vertical stacking of chip layers.

YMTC has intensified collaboration with local suppliers such as Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment (AMEC) since the U.S. Commerce Department added YMTC to its Entity List in December 2022, they said.

AMEC also did not respond to a request for comment.

Reuters was not able to learn target operational dates for the two factories being planned or where they might be located.

Founded in 2016 in Wuhan with strong backing from local government and major state-backed chip investment funds, YMTC has made relatively quick ‌strides in know-how, and analysts say its latest Xtacking 4.0 architecture is on par with products from sector leaders like Samsung Electronics.

Although most of its sales are in China, YMTC accounted for 11.8% of the global NAND flash market last year, according to a UBS report. While Samsung commands 30.4% of the market, ‌YMTC has the same share as Sandisk and is not too far behind SK Hynix, Kioxia and Micron which hold 16%, 15.9% and 13.3% respectively.

UBS predicts YMTC's share will exceed 14% by early 2027.

YMTC is also expanding into DRAM, the memory chips used for temporary data processing in electronic devices.

All three new plants will allocate some capacity to DRAM production, two sources said, ‌adding that the exact amount will depend on the company's progress in developing those chips.

YMTC has sent low-power DRAM (LPDDR) samples to clients and expects feedback by the end of the year, which will inform DRAM production decisions, they added.

China says it will resume some ties with Taiwan including more direct flights

BANGKOK (AP) — China said Sunday it would resume some ties it had suspended with Taiwan such as direct flights to cities across China and imports of Taiwanese aquaculture products as the island's opposition party leader concludes her visit.

China Taiwan

The Taiwan Work Office under China's Communist Party issued a statement saying it would explore setting up a longstanding communication mechanism between the Communist Party and Taiwan’s Kuomingtang Party, and facilitate the import of Taiwan’s aquaculture products, after it banned them in recent years.

Cheng Li-wun, the head of the Kuomingtang, and China’s President Xi Jinpingheld a high-profile meetingFriday during which both called for peace without offering specifics. Taiwan is self-ruled but China claims the island as part of its territory.

Relations between China and Taiwan have been tense since 2016 when the Taiwanese public elected Tsai Ing-wen from the Democratic Progressive Party as president. Since then, Beijing cut off most of its official dialogue with Taiwan's government in the capital Taipei and started sending military planes and vessels towards the island on a daily basis.

The list of measures in the statement touches on ties that China had suspended in recent years as tensions increased.

China plans to resume direct flights for other mainland cities like Xi'an or Urumqi to Taiwan, the statement said, although it remained unclear how the measures will be implemented.

Chinabanned individual tripsby Chinese people to Taiwan in 2019. Taiwan's rules now require Chinese visitors to hold a valid resident visa from another country, like the U.S. or the European Union, to apply for a visitor visa.

China also said it would work toward construction of a bridge that would connect to Matsu and Kinmen, Taiwanese islands that are closer geographically to China. The project is a longstanding proposal that Beijing has previously announced.

China banned the import of Taiwanese pineapples in 2021 and since then extended the import ban to products as varied as the grouper fish, squid, tuna and other fruits.

After the initial ban on grouper, Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture said it approached China about making adjustments to ensure it met import requirements. China replied with a limited list of individual companies that were allowed to sell to China, but without explanation.

Taiwan added it would "continuously assist farmers and businesses in expanding into overseas markets" in order to diversify risk, according to a statement it issued Saturday.
