Drunk raccoon found passed out on liquor store floor after breaking in

Staff at a Virginia liquor store got a shock on Saturday when they came into work to find a raccoon had burgled the store, drinking its way through the spirits section.

The "masked bandit" was found passed out in the bathroom between the toilet and bin having helped itself to bottles on a bottom shelf.

Animal control officer Samantha Martin transported the "suspect" for questioning at Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter but not before it had a chance to sober up.

After a few hours of sleep and zero signs of injury (other than maybe a hangover), the animal was safely released back into the wild.

The Ashland ABC store had been closed for Thanksgiving when it suffered its "Black Friday break-in".

When staff arrived on Saturday they found smashed bottles and liquor pooling on the floor, including its apparent tipple of choice, scotch.

Officer Martin said the animal had fallen through one of the ceiling tiles before going "on a full-blown rampage, drinking everything".

Only one blurry CCTV image of the boozy break-in exists, so it's unknown just how much alcohol the thirsty creature consumed before passing out in the bathroom.

In a social media post, the store thanked Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter for its professionalism and providing its visitor with a "sober ride home".

Officer Martin said it was "just another day in the life of an animal control officer".

Will it be a white Christmas? Adjust your expectations.

Christmas is fast approaching, and many parts of the United States have seen a glimpse (or a lot more) of snow already this winter season. But what are the chances of having a white Christmas in 2025?

It's too early for meteorologists to say with much certainty where there will be enough snow to count as a white Christmas. (A white Christmas isat least 1 inch of snow is on the ground, whether or not it actually snows on Christmas Day, according to forecasters.)

On Dec. 3,about 40% of the countrywas covered by snow, after recent snowstorms in parts of the Midwest, New England and Mid-Atlantic. More rounds of snow and arctic air are expected in the coming days and weeks, forecasters said.

Though the available data gives us a good idea of the chances of a white Christmas, NOAA says "theactual conditions in any year may vary widelyfrom these because the weather patterns present will determine the snow on the ground or snowfall on Christmas day." Check back withUSA TODAY's coverageand your local weather service office closer to Dec. 25 for a surer forecast.

Still, historical weather data can give us an idea of the odds for different parts of the country.

States with the best historical chance of a white Christmas

In any given year, your best bet for a white Christmas is in Minnesota, Maine, upstate New York, Idaho or some of the snowiest mountain ranges in the country, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which produced a map of the probabilities for a white Christmas based on climate data from 1991 to 2020.

Cities with the best historical chance of a white Christmas

None of the most-populated 25 cities in the United States have a very good chance (higher than one-in-three) of a white Christmas, according to AccuWeather's analysis of the historical data. Among the biggest cities, Denver is the most likely, with a 34% chance, followed by Chicago with about a 33.5% chance, AccuWeather reported.

Indianapolis, Boston and Columbus rounded out the top five major U.S. cities for best chances of a snowy Christmas setting.

Aside from major cities, mountain towns in the Rockies and New England have the best chances at a white Christmas, AccuWeather reported. Tahoe City, California, has an 83.4% chance. Ski towns in Colorado have chances from 94 to 99%.

States with the worst chances for a white Christmas

The least likely spots for a snowy Christmas scene? The West Coast, Deep South and Gulf Coast.

The worst chances for snow include much of the southeastern part of the country and the West Coast, according to the NOAA data. It might go without saying, but there is a 0% probability of a white Christmas in Miami, Houston and Los Angeles based on the data.

NTSB describes final moments of flight that killed missionary father and daughter in Florida crash

One of the last things air traffic controllers heard as a small plane carrying a Christian missionary father and his daughter descended rapidly over Florida last month was heavy breathing and grunting before theplane crashed.

The National Transportation Safety Board described the plane's fatal Nov. 10 flight in its preliminary report Wednesday, but the cause of the crash won't be known until the investigation is completed sometime next year. The founder of Christian ministry organization Ignite the Fire, Alexander Wurm, 53, and his daughter Serena Wurm, 22,were killedin the crash.

The Wurms were bringing humanitarian aid to Jamaica when the Beechcraft King Air plane they were flying crashed into a pond in a residential area of the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Coral Springs, narrowly missing homes.

The NTSB report also raised questions about whether the plane might have been overloaded, but investigators haven't determined yet if that was the case.

The preliminary report says the missionary group planned to load 1,000 pounds of supplies onto the plane, including a generator. But when they got to the airport the pilot had already loaded about 200 pounds of gear.

The report said the pilot checked the stated weight of everything on a report as it was loaded but didn't weigh the items. The generator was strapped down in the back while other supplies were stacked on the seats in the cabin. The pilot left behind some items for a future flight.

But the NTSB said the plane didn't make it far from the Fort Lauderdale airport before it started to descend sharply after leveling off at 4,000 feet. The plane reached a speed of 270 knots before it crashed. Security cameras captured the last moments of the flight, showing the plane with its nose pointed 45 degrees down before it smashed into the water.

The plane broke apart on impact. The NTSB said it had recently been overhauled with new interior finishings and avionics after it was purchased by its current owner in February 2024.

In the week before the crash, the plane had made four other trips to Jamaica that was ravaged by Hurricane Melissa.

The powerful Category 5 storm made landfall in Jamaica on Oct. 28 and tied for thestrongest landfalling Atlantic hurricanein history. The storm also caused devastation in Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic and promptedrelief organizationsto mobilize.

Ignite the Fire said after the crash that the Wurm family was passionate about humanitarian work and their Christian faith. The group that Wurm founded is "dedicated to empowering youth through missions and evangelism across the Caribbean."

NEED TO KNOW

  • Tara Reid was taken out on a stretcher from a hotel in Rosemont, Ill., on Nov. 23

  • Two days later, she filed a police report claiming she had been drugged at the hotel

  • The Rosemont Public Safety Department tells PEOPLE, after reviewing the surveillance footage, there is no indication that the actress was drugged

Tara Reidwas taken out on a stretcher from a Rosemont, Ill., hotel on Nov. 23, which she later claimed was because she was drugged by a stranger. However, police now say there is no video evidence to support her claim that she was drugged.

The Rosemont Public Safety Department told PEOPLE on Wednesday, Dec. 3, that the surveillance footage does not indicate that Reid was drugged at the DoubleTree Chicago O'Hare Airport — Rosemont.

"While video surveillance showed Tara Reid at the hotel bar, at no time did video show anyone tampering with or adding something to her drink," police said in a statement to PEOPLE. "We can confirm that a bartender covered her drink when she left the bar which is standard practice for bartenders to do."

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and they are still waiting for hospital records.

"We cannot, however, confirm at this time if or what specific chemical testing the hospital may have conducted," authorities continued, adding that they are working with Reid "to receive those records which she has also not received."

"Pending those results or further information coming forward, our detectives will follow up on those leads accordingly," the statement continued. "At this time there is no criminal act that has been committed and there is no one we are currently investigating. While we do not have any evidence that a drink was tampered with, it is a good reminder to never leave a drink unattended. If you ever believe you have been drugged or feel unsafe, please reach out to local authorities."

PEOPLE reached out to a representative for Reid.

In Reid's police report, the actress, 50, said she "completely blacked out" after having a drink with a stranger while staying at the DoubleTree Hotel in Rosemont for a celebrity signing on Nov. 23.

Reid said she ordered a glass of white wine from the hotel bar and then "A man came up to me and introduced himself as Sean P, a very successful influencer and YouTuber," and joined her at the bar.

They ended up going outside to have a cigarette, and while talking, exchanged phone numbers. She alleged that once she returned inside, "there was a napkin over my drink."

"Then the last thing I remember was drinking that drink and seeing a couple sitting next to us. The next thing I remember was waking up in the hospital around 8 hours or more later not knowing where I was or anything that happened. I completely blacked out with no recollection of anything," she told police.

Video obtained byTMZshowed Reid seemingly unable to stand on her own as a man held her up, and a woman brought a wheelchair for her.

"Give her a second," a man is heard saying as several individuals are gathered around Reid. One of the men forcefully pulls on her coat to place her in the wheelchair, with the initial man who was holding her up extending his free arm to tell the other person to stop.

Once seated in the wheelchair, the actress was provided bottled water, but spoke incoherently as she was wheeled away. Before she was placed on the stretcher, video showed her slouching, almost completely out of the wheelchair.

Reid's agent picked her up from the hospital. They went back to the hotel so she could collect her belongings and then she returned to Los Angeles.

Two days later she said she attempted to file a police report once she returned to L.A., but "they said that I could not file one over the phone and had to be there in person." She added that she was eventually allowed to file the report without having to return to Illinois.

Reid alleged that the influencer she met "texted me the videos of me the next day," which she considered to be an extortion attempt as he allegedly told her he "could stop the videos [from] going out."

She added that he confirmed Reid only had one drink while they were together.

In a Nov. 26 statement to PEOPLE, the DoubleTree Chicago O'Hare Airport said that as soon as "hotel staff observed a potential health concern involving a guest, our trained security team assisted and arranged for medical support."

"However, our hotel takes any allegation affecting guest safety very seriously and will provide appropriate information to authorities if requested," the statement continued. "The safety and security of our guests and employees is of paramount importance to us."

NEED TO KNOW

  • Matthew Perry's mother and stepfather, Suzanne and Keith Morrison, and his father and stepmother, John and Debby Perry, have shared their grief in emotional victim impact letters ahead of the sentencing of Dr. Salvador Plasencia on Dec. 3

  • In July, Plasencia pleaded guilty to distributing ketamine to the late Friends actor before he died

  • The Morrisons said the pain of losing Perry is a "deep well" and called Plasencia "among the most culpable of all"

Matthew Perry's parents have shared emotional statements ahead of the sentencing of a doctor charged in connection with the actor'sdeathin October 2023.

In July,PEOPLE reportedthat Dr. Salvador Plasencia had formally pleaded guilty to distributing ketamine to Perry before he died. Plasencia —one of five people facing criminal charges in Perry's death—entered into a plea agreementthe previous month.

The new victim impact letters were submitted to the court ahead of the sentencing of Plasencia on Wednesday, Dec. 3, according toRolling Stone.

"How do you measure grief? Can you possibly provide any rational accounting? The bottom falling out? Yes, that," the letter written by Perry'smother, Suzanne Morrison, and his stepfather,Keith Morrison, reads, per the outlet.

"Here was a life so entwined with ours and held aloft sometimes with duct tape and bailing wire, with anything that might keep that big terrible thing from killing our first-born son, and our hearts with him," the letter continues. "And then those greedy jackals come out of the dark, and all the effort is for naught; it all crashes down."

The statement goes on to call Plasencia "among the most culpable of all,"  and says their pain is a "deep well" with no bottom in sight.

Plasencia's plea agreement stated that he distributed 20 vials of ketamine, ketamine lozenges and syringes to Perry and the actor's live-in personal assistant,Kenneth Iwamasa, between September 30, 2023, and October 12, 2023,ABC Newspreviously reported.

Perrydied on Oct. 28, 2023, from acute effects of ketamine, in addition to other contributing factors such as drowning, coronary artery disease and effects from buprenorphine, a medication used to treat opioid use disorder, according to his autopsy.

"His story moved so many people," the letter from theFriendsactor's mother and stepfather continues, perRolling Stone. "And he wanted, needed, deserved..a third act. It was ..in the planning. And then, those jackals."

"No one alive and in touch with the world at all could have been unaware of Matthew's struggles. But this doctor conspired to break his most important vows, repeatedly, sneaked through the night to meet his victim in secret,"  it adds. "For what, a few thousand dollars? So he could feed on the vulnerability of our son…and crow, as he did so, with that revealing question: 'I wonder how much this moron will pay. Let's find out.' Some things are very hard to understand."

Perry's father and stepmother, John and Debby Perry, also shared their grief in their victim impact letter. Writing that Plasencia "didn't deserve to hear" their feelings, John and Debby called the late actor "a warm, loving man who was to be our rock as we aged. An uncle to our grandchildren and the mountain his siblings could turn to. Our next patriarch."

"Matthew's recovery counted on you saying NO," they go on, seeming to address Plasencia directly.

"Your motives? I can't imagine. A doctor whose life is devoted to helping people? Whatever were you thinking? How long did you possibly see supplying Matthew countless doses without his death to eventually follow? Did you care? Did you think? How many more people have you harmed that we don't know about?" the letter continues, adding, "We ask the court to give you plenty of time to think about your actions by extending your sentence beyond the mandatory time."

PEOPLE previously reported that Plasencia could face up to 40 years in prison for the four counts of distribution of ketamine.
