TORONTO (AP) — Fourth-seeded Ben Shelton of the United States rallied in the third set to beat 13th-seeded Flavio Cobolli of Italy 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1) on Sunday night in the National Bank Open.

Shelton overcame a 4-2 deficit in the final set to advance to the quarterfinals Tuesday in the hard-court event that ends Thursday.

"Really difficult match. I was down and out, being a break down in the third, the way that he was playing," Shelton said. "I gave myself a second chance and I did a good job with it, kind of running from there. A really difficult opponent for me, someone who's gotten me in three sets after I've won the first set twice."

He will face ninth-seeded Alex de Minaur of Australia, a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 winner over seventh-seeded Frances Tiafoe of the United States 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

The 22-year-old Shelton has two ATP Tour victories, in Tokyo on hard courts in 2023 and Houston on clay last year. The victory Sunday was his 100th in 169 tour matches.

"I thought I did a really good job rallying and finding a way to put returns in the court late in the match," Shelton said. "I was struggling with my two biggest weapons, the serve and the first-ball forehand. Coming through in the end I think speaks a lot about my mental toughness and my ability to be scrappy in those moments, more so than my actual play."

The 23-year-old Cobolli won clay events in Hamburg and Bucharest this year for his lone tour titles.

Earlier, sixth-seeded Audrey Rublev of Russia led Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 3-0 when Davidovich Fokina retired because of exhaustion.

Rublev will face the winner of the late match between second-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States and Jiri Lehecka of Czechia.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Inter Miami star Lionel Messi is dealing with a minor muscle injury in his right leg after being hurt in the opening minutes of Saturday's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa, the club said Sunday.

Messi underwent tests on his right leg after experiencing discomfort following a play in which he fell while being challenged by a pair of Necaxa defenders, in a game Inter Miami won on penalty kicks.

His timeline for return isn't yet known, though it seems unlikely that he will be available for Miami's next Leagues Cup match against UNAM Pumas on Wednesday.

Inter Miami said in a release that Messi's medical clearance will depend on how he responds to treatment.

Messi slapped his hand against the ground in frustration after the fall, which happened in the first 10 minutes of Saturday's match. He walked slowly toward the Inter Miami bench before sitting down on the pitch. Trainers came out and worked on his right upper thigh area for a couple of minutes before he subbed out for Federico Redondo in the 11th. He then immediately walked to the locker room.

Miami coach Javier Mascherano said after the game that Messi wasn't in any pain.

Danielle Wallace, Bonny ChuAugust 4, 2025 at 1:43 AM

Kia America issued two recall notices within a week for more than 300,000 vehicles over loose parts near the doors and windows that can fall off and pose a potential hazard to other drivers.

The recalls affect 201,149 Telluride models from 2023 to 2025 over faulty door belt moldings and 100,063 K5 models from 2023 to 2025 over window trim detachment issues, according to two separate July 28 notices from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Detached trim pieces can create "a road hazard for other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash," NHTSA said in both notices.

The recalled Telluride models may experience loosening and eventual detachment of its door belt molding trims – the long, narrow strip located along the top edge of the vehicle's door where the glass window meets the metal frame of the door, according to NHTSA.

The K5 models recalled may also experience the same issue with its C-pillar garnish face plates – decorative panels located near the left and right rear windows, NHTSA said in the second notice.

Due to a supplier quality issue, the C-pillar garnish face plate and door belt molding face plate "may progressively delaminate and become loose from the base of the molding," Kia North America Safety Office said in additional notices posted on July 29.

"If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the face plate may eventually fall off," Kia added. "A face plate that detaches from the vehicle while in motion may create a road hazard for other road users, increasing the risk of a crash."

Owners can bring their vehicles to a Kia dealership for a free inspection and replacement of the C-pillar trim assemblies as well as the belt molding trim assemblies, NHTSA said in the notices.

"Dealers will replace the affected C-pillar garnish assembly(ies) not previously replaced under warranty with an improved one," NHTSA said. "Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred pursuant to Kia's General Reimbursement Plan filed May 1, 2024."

Notification letters to vehicle owners of the K5 and Telluride models are expected to be mailed on Sep. 26, NHTSA said. For more information, owners may contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542 and reference recall number SC346 for the K5 recall and SC347 for the Telluride recall, according to the agency.

Vehicle owners can check if their car is affected by visiting the NHTSA recall website, where they can search by make, model, license plate number, or Vehicle Identification Number.

NHTSA and Kia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from FOX Business.

A 10-year-old girl died after she was seriously injured when the sailboat she was on as part of a summer was rammed by a barge near Miami.

The family of Arielle Buchman said Sunday that the little girl succumbed to her injuries after the crash involving a Miami Youth Sailing boat last week in the Biscayne Bay, CBS News reported.

"With broken hearts, we announce the funeral service of our beloved Arielle Mazi Buchman," the grieving family said in a statement.

Arielle Buchman died from her injuries.

Two other little girls on the boat were also killed. A third is still hospitalized. One passenger and the instructor were not injured.

Arielle was aboard the boat with fellow victims Erin Ko Han, 13, and Mila Yankelevich, 7, last Monday when it collided with a large barge near the Hibiscus Island, dragging their vessel underneath.

The crash happened on Erin's first day with the Yacht Club, her heartbroken father, Pil Ko, told Local 10.

"We hoped that this was all just a dream, or that a miracle would have happened," Ko said after he learned about the crash.

"That the hospital would call and say, 'Your daughter is alive. She's alright.' But no, that didn't happen. No, no, no. It's not what happened," he sobbed.

Mila, who was the youngest on the boat, was identified as the granddaughter of an award-winning Argentinian TV producer, Cris Morena, according to La Nacion.

Mila's other grandfather, Gustavo Yankelevich, and father, Tomas Yankelevich, are also producers, while her mother, Sofia Reca, is an actor.

The Coast Guard is currently leading an investigation into what caused the crash with the barge, which was supporting construction along the coast.

Officials confirmed Friday that the boat captain's recent toxicology report came back negative.

"Our hearts are with the families of those lost and all who have been affected by this tragedy," Capt. Frank Florio, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami, said in a statement.

"Incidents like this leave a lasting impact on our maritime community and reinforce the importance of learning from every loss," he added. The Coast Guard will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the causal factors and identify steps to help prevent similar tragedies in the future."

Tom Holland is giving fans a first look at "Spider-Man: Brand New Day."

In an Instagram post on Sunday, Holland shared two on-set photos with the caption, "'Spider-Man Brand New Day' 1." Both pics show Holland in costume as the web-slinging hero. He is standing on top of what appears to be an armored vehicle while connected to a stunt wire.

A post shared by Tom Holland (@tomholland2013)

Holland's sneak peek comes just a day after the official Spider-Man Movie X account revealed the new Spidey Suit for "Brand New Day." The reveal teaser sees Holland emerge from the shadows in his new ensemble, which more closely resembles the comic-book version than his previous duds.

"We ready?" Holland asks in the video. The new Spidey Suit has more vivid reds and blues, and features a larger spider symbol than his costumes from "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "Far From Home" and "No Way Home." "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" hits theaters on July 31, 2026.

"Brand New Day" marks the fourth MCU Spider-Man installment from Sony and Disney after 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home." In that film, Peter Parker's secret identity is revealed to the entire world, and the young hero must turn to Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange for help. He manages to conjure a spell that makes everyone forget Parker is Spider-Man, but not without some unintended side effects. The spell pulls other web-slingers and their respective villains into Parker's dimension, leading to the viral moment between Holland and Sony's previous Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

"Brand New Day" is based on the Spider-Man comic storyline of the same name. In the comic book story, Parker lands a deal with Mephisto to make the world forget he is Spider-Man and resurrect Aunt May. However, the spell essentially reboots his world and dissolves his marriage with MJ.

"Shang-Chi" helmer Destin Daniel Cretton serves as director on "Brand New Day." Jon Bernthal's the Punisher and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, will also appear in the movie.

Noah Lyles edged rival Kenny Bednarek in a spicy 200-meter final at the USATF National Championships Sunday that concluded with Bednarek shoving Lyles in the back.

After the race's conclusion, tension between the pair carried over into a post-race interview with NBC.

The high-stakes matchup was the latest between the two world-class sprinters. Lyles is a three-time world champion (2019, 2022, 2023) in the event and defeated Bednarek at the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials ahead of the Paris Games.

But Bednarek got the best of Lyles in Paris with a silver-medal finish ahead of Lyles' bronze-medal run that denied him double Olympic gold after Lyles was victorious in the 100 meters. Lyles later revealed that he ran the 200 meters in Paris while sick with COVID-19.

Bednarek, meanwhile, has been the dominant male sprinter on the circuit this year and was undefeated in the event in 2025 — until Sunday.

Bednarek got the early jump in Sunday's final before Lyles ran him down from behind on the straightaway. Lyles passed Bednarek late to cross the finish line first with a time of 19.63 seconds for his fifth U.S. championship in the event. Bednarek settled for the silver medal with a time of 19.67 seconds.

As they crossed the finish line, Lyles gave Bednarek a look from his place one lane to Bednarek's right. Bednarek responded with a shove in Lyles' back.

Lyles turned around with his arms raised and a few words for Bednarek. Bednarek extended his hand, which Lyles begrudgingly accepted for a handshake before an extended exchange of words. Spectators at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, collectively gasped when they saw the slow-motion replay of Bednarek's shove.

Then came the post-race interview of both runners with NBC. The tension was still fresh, and the runners were hashing things out in the range of NBC's camera and microphone before the interview commenced.

"You're right," Lyles said to Bednarek.

"I expected a call," Bednarek responded. "I'm telling you, if you've got a problem, I expected a call. That's all I'm saying.

"You know what? You're right," Lyles responded. "Let's talk after this."

Bednarek then addressed Lyles' late-race look when asked about it.

"I'm not gonna say it out here," Bednarek said. "But we've got something to do and talk about. That's all I've got to say."

The two have several weeks to work things out before they meet again on the track. With Sunday's result, Bednarek earned a spot in Tokyo for the World Championships. As the reigning world champion, Lyles' spot in Tokyo was already secure. They'll both be among the favorites to win the 200-meter final that's slated to be run on Sept. 19.

They'll also have a chance to meet in the 100-meter final in Tokyo. Bednarek secured gold in the U.S. 100-meter final on Friday. Lyles did not compete, but has a bye into that event as well thanks to his World Championship win in the event in 2023.

The Miami Marlins' red-hot summer just keeps coming. The Marlins powered to a 7-3 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday, completing a sweep of the Yankees for the first time in franchise history.

Miami also hit the milestone in front of a big crowd, with a series attendance of 101,545 setting a franchise record.

With the win, Miami moved to 55-55, hitting .500 for the first time since April. The team dropped to 24-40 in early June, but have won 31 games in the two months since to pull to even.

Did Miami get a dig in at New York in the run-up to the final out? You be the judge here over the Marlins' curious choice of playing "Sweet Caroline," a Fenway Park tradition, in the ninth inning.

Sunday's win came easily to the Marlins, who took a 3-1 lead after two innings. Then, in the fourth inning, Kyle Stowers hit a three-run homer to bring Miami's lead to 6-1.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run bomb in the seventh to help the Yankees cut into the deficit, but an RBI triple from Jakob Marsee secured the 7-3 win.

The series was a poor showing from the Yankees, who dropped the first game 13-12 after a trio of relievers blew a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh. All three pitchers — Jake Bird, David Bednar and Camilo Doval — were recent acquisitions ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

The bad luck continued Saturday, as the Yankees were caught sleeping while Miami powered to a 2-0 win. Then, on Sunday, the Marlins secured the historic sweep.

Miami will keep trying to ride that momentum through the next series, a homestand against the AL West-leading Houston Astros. The Yankees, meanwhile, will lick their wounds on the way to playing the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
