LOS ANGELES (AP) — Soulja Boy was arrested early Sunday following a traffic stop on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Soulja Boy, 35, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was a passenger during a traffic stop at 2:35 a.m., police said, and was arrested. Way was booked into jail in the Los Angeles Police Department's Wilshire Division a little after 6 a.m., according to the sheriff department's inmate database.

Additional information on what prompted the stop and who else was in the vehicle was not immediately available, police said.

A representative for Way did not immediately respond to The ' request for comment.

The Chicago hip-hop artist is best known for his 2007 single "Crank That (Soulja Boy)," which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and brought him a Grammy nomination for best rap song.

The rapper was recently ordered to pay more $4 million in damages in April after being found liable for sexually assaulting and physically and emotionally abusing a former assistant.

With his contract dispute ongoing, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook showed up for Sunday's mandatory practice but did not participate. Instead, the 25-year-old stood off to the side and spent a short amount of time on an exercise bike.

After practice, when asked why he did not participate, Cook offered just three words: "Oh, nothing. Business."

Sunday marked the first time Cook did not participate since requesting a contract extension during the offseason. The two-time Pro Bowler, who shared the league lead with 16 rushing touchdowns last season, wants to become one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL.

Cook also was asked whether he was holding out or planning to suit up for Monday's practice.

Again, Cook kept his response short: "Business."

The Bills provided no comment on Cook, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. Cook -- who did not attend Buffalo's voluntary offseason team activities but did participate in the mandatory three-day minicamp as well as the first eight practices of training camp -- was not on the team's list of injured players leading up to Sunday's practice.

Entering his fourth year in the league, Cook has put together back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. His 2,638 rushing yards are the most among his peers in the 2022 draft class. Yet he is not on the list of Bills' 2022 draftees -- wide receiver Khalil Shakir, linebacker Terrel Bernard and cornerback Christian Benford -- who have been rewarded with extensions. The Bills traded their first-round pick from that season, cornerback Kaiir Elam, to the Dallas Cowboys in March.

"Sometimes you can't get on the same page or sometimes you're trying to fit it in," Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane told reporters at the start of camp. "There's times guys have left here that we really wanted. We just couldn't make it work.

"But I can tell you, I'm hopeful, when we're sitting here at next year's training camp, that James Cook is out there practicing and still representing the red, white and blue."

RuPaul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon has brutally mocked JK Rowling's views on transgender people.

The author, 60, has been publicly criticized for her controversial statements about transgender people, including celebrating the UK Supreme Court's April ruling that trans women are not legally women under the Equality Act. However, the Harry Potter author has denied being transphobic.

Many famous faces have hit back at Rowling's views, including Monsoon, who identifies as non-binary. During Thursday's episode of comedian Ziwe's podcast, he asked Monsoon if Rowling would "make a good Roxy Hart in Chicago," the Broadway musical.

The drag performer responded: "Who is this? Who is this Jake? Who is he? JK Rowling."

When Ziwe said Rowling "is a she," Monsoon then mocked the author's name. Rowling notably goes by her initials, JK, which stands for Joanne Kathleen.

Jinkx Monsoon jokes JK Rowling's pen name is 'not feminine' after the author was criticized for her trans views (Getty Images)

"That is not a feminine name in the slightest," they said about Rowling. "I know that oftentimes, female authors use initials so that people assume it's a male writer."

Monsoon continued to throw shade at Rowling's views about transgender rights and issues.

"I have to presume that J.K. Rowling was unsatisfied with the way that the world saw her, and then she transitioned herself into a new personality so that the world would perceive her the way she wanted to be perceived," they continued.

After a moment of silence, Ziwe responded to the remark with: "Gagging," prompting Monsoon to burst out laughing.

Rowling has previously opened up about going by the pen name, telling CNN in 2017 that it wasn't her idea to use it. Instead, it was her publisher who was trying to "disguise [her] gender."

"I was so grateful to be published, if they told me to call myself Rupert, I probably would have done to be honest with you," she said. "But now, I actually quite like having a pen name, because I feel that's — to an extent, that feels like an identity and then I'm — in private life, I'm Jo Murray. And it feels like quite a nice separation."

Rowling also uses the pen name Robert Galbraith when publishing her ongoing detective series, Cormoran Strike. She uses the pseudonym because she "wanted to take [her] writing persona as far away as possible from [her]," as noted on her website.

Since December 2019, Rowling has also hit the headlines for her views on transgender issues. She came out in support of Maya Forstater, who worked as a tax expert at the Centre for Global Development, an international think tank, and was sacked after tweeting that transgender people cannot change their biological sex.

Since then, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, the trio of child actors who played Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the film series, have all publicly shunned Rowling over her apparent anti-transgender views. The author has said she would not forgive them for criticizing her, telling them to "save their apologies."

Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, was recently asked whether Rowling's views "impact you at all or impact your work in the world of Harry Potter at all."

"No, I can't say it does," he replied. "I'm not really that attuned to it."

In May, Rowling announced the launch of the J.K. Rowling Women's Fund. The legal fund, which doesn't specifically mention transgender people, will support "individuals and organizations fighting to retain women's sex-based rights in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces," its website says.

However, many bookstores in San Francisco later responded to the fund in with protest by pulling Harry Potter books from stores' shelves.

"I don't even know how I walked, and next thing I know we're playing this set, and I think I'm going by what Shirley MacLaine calls muscle memory," he confessed.

"When we got to 'Soul Sacrifice,' I noticed that the neck of my guitar was like an electric snake. It wouldn't stand still, you know. So I'm making some seriously ugly faces trying to keep it from slithering so much."

Santana's 11-minute performance of "Soul Sacrifice" is widely considered the standout of Woodstock '69. Featuring a jaw-dropping drum solo by then-teenage drummer Michael Shrieve, the set catapulted Santana to international fame.

Jack Osbourne is reflecting on his late dad Ozzy Osbourne's eating habits.

During an Aug. 3 TV appearance on the U.K. food show Cooking with the Stars — filmed before his father's death — Jack, 39, spoke about growing up in a house where professional chefs often cooked the family's meals.

"I grew up on potato waffles until we moved to America," he said, recalling how he, Ozzy, mom Sharon and sisters Aimee and Kelly moved to the U.S. from England when he was around 11 years old. "We would get take out all the time — apart from times when we had a chef."

Jack joked that the Black Sabbath frontman never employed any one chef for a long time, as he was a "picky eater" who would suddenly decide: "'No, I don't like it anymore,' even though it's some amazing chef."

Osbourne died on July 22 at 76 years old. Jack publicly mourned his father's death alongside his mother and siblings on the Black Sabbath bridge and bench in Birmingham, England.

Ozzy had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2023. Before his death, he performed his final Black Sabbath concert in early July.

A source close to the family also told PEOPLE that the rocker was to be honored by his family with a funeral befitting the star's infectious spirit.

"They're very grateful for the special family time they had together before Ozzy passed," the source said last week. "They're planning a small, private funeral that will be a celebration of his life. Ozzy would never want a mope-fest."

The source added that the rocker's family is "touched by all the love and support pouring in from around the world."

Although Jack hasn't yet spoken publicly about his father's death, a number of other Osbourne family members have looked back on Ozzy's life — including Jack's ex-wife Lisa Stelly.

Stelly posted a touching tribute on Instagram of Ozzy with his grandchildren throughout the years. From painting in the house to flying in a private jet, the proud mom of three shared several special memories of Ozzy enjoying being a grandfather.

Stelly, 38, reposted the post onto her Instagram Stories, adding "Love you, Papa" in text and Ozzy's 1995 song, "See You on the Other Side."

Daughter Kelly, 40, also posted a photo on her Instagram Stories on Aug. 1, showing a flower display crafted in honor of Ozzy.

An arrangement of purple flowers that spelled out "Ozzy F------ Osbourne" could be seen in the social media post.

The florals were similar to those that were laid at the hearse at Ozzy's funeral.

Kelly previously shared a poignant tribute to her dad on her Instagram Stories on July 24, posting lyrics from the Black Sabbath song "Changes," which she and Ozzy recorded their own version of in 2003.

"I feel unhappy I am so sad," Kelly wrote in her social media post. "I lost the best friend I ever had 💔."

Key Points -

Market indexes have been reaching new heights, and right now is an incredibly expensive time to buy.

Some investors are worried a correction or recession may be looming, making it smarter to wait.

However, history suggests that there's never necessarily a bad time to invest.

10 stocks we like better than S&P 500 Index ›

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has been breaking records over the last few weeks, officially reaching a new all-time high in July. As of this writing on Aug. 1, it's up by about 25% from its low point in April.

However, not everyone is optimistic about the market right now. In fact, one-third of U.S. investors say they are feeling "bearish" about where stocks will be in the next six months, according to the most recent weekly survey from the American Association of Individual Investors.

Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »

With stock prices near record-breaking highs, some investors may be tempted to wait until the next downturn to buy at a discount. Here's what history says about whether you should buy now or hold off.

Person looking at charts on a computer.

Is it safe to invest now?

Nobody can predict where stocks will be a few months or a year from now, and new policies out of Washington could change things on a dime. However, several scenarios are possible.

For one, stock prices could continue soaring like they have over the past few months. If that happens, right now would be a fantastic time to buy to see immediate gains.

Scenario two is that the market takes a sharp turn for the worse, like it did earlier this year amid tariff uncertainty. Between February and April, the S&P 500 fell by close to 20%, leaving many investors panicked and eager to sell. But those who stayed the course and held their investments reaped the rewards when the market quickly rebounded.

A similar situation played out in March 2020, when the S&P 500 experienced one of the fastest crashes in history at the start of the pandemic. The short term was rough, but the S&P 500 has since earned total returns of nearly 112%.

^SPX Chart

^SPX data by YCharts.

The third scenario may be the one that concerns investors the most: a prolonged recession. But even if that is on the horizon, investing at record-high prices doesn't necessarily mean you'll lose money.

A market downturn may result in your portfolio losing value. But if you hold your investments until the rebound without selling, you likely won't experience any actual losses.

Say, for example, you invested in an S&P 500 index fund in December 2007. The market was reaching record highs at the time, but it was about to slip into the Great Recession, which would last until 2009.

^SPX Chart

^SPX data by YCharts.

In that time, your investment would have plunged by more than 50%. Selling at any point during that recession could have locked in significant losses, since you would have likely been selling your investments for far less than what you paid for them.

However, if you simply stayed in the market, you would have earned total returns of around 75% after 10 years and 312% by today -- more than quadrupling your money.

^SPX Chart

^SPX data by YCharts.

In other words, even if you had invested at the seemingly worst possible moment -- at record-high prices immediately before one of the most severe recessions in U.S. history -- you would still have made a significant amount of money over time.

Now, could you have earned more if you had waited until the market was at its lowest point to buy? Definitely. But hindsight is 20/20, and nobody knows when the next correction or bear market will begin. Timing the market accurately is next to impossible, and if your timing is even slightly off, you could potentially lose a lot of money.

Rather than waiting for a chance to "buy the dip," it's often wiser to invest consistently. You can always increase the amount you invest during the next slump, when stocks are at a discount. But in the meantime, continuing to buy can ensure you're not missing out on immediate gains if stock prices stay on the rise.

One major caveat to remember

The key to ensuring your portfolio survives a downturn is to only invest in long-term quality stocks. Sometimes weak companies can thrive in the short term, earning exponential growth in a matter of months. But those investments are far less likely to pull through tough economic times.

Healthy companies with strong business foundations have a much better chance of seeing long-term growth despite short-term hiccups. When a company has a solid competitive advantage, a competent leadership team, robust financials, and a long-term plan for the future, it's much more likely to survive even the worst recessions or bear markets.

The most important thing you can do right now, then, is double-check that every stock in your portfolio deserves to be there. Once you're certain that all of your investments have healthy fundamentals, you can rest easier knowing that you're well prepared for whatever may lie ahead.

Should you invest $1,000 in S&P 500 Index right now?

Before you buy stock in S&P 500 Index, consider this:

The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and S&P 500 Index wasn't one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could produce monster returns in the coming years.

Consider when Netflix made this list on December 17, 2004... if you invested $1,000 at the time of our recommendation, you'd have $624,823!* Or when Nvidia made this list on April 15, 2005... if you invested $1,000 at the time of our recommendation, you'd have $1,064,820!*

Now, it's worth noting Stock Advisor's total average return is 1,019% — a market-crushing outperformance compared to 178% for the S&P 500. Don't miss out on the latest top 10 list, available when you join Stock Advisor.

A woman revealed to her line manager that she would be flying from abroad the night before her shift

In a Mumsnet post, the woman shared her outrage after her time off request was rejected because her manager thinks she won't be "fit for work"

"AIBU [am I being unreasonable] for thinking it's up to me how I spend my annual leave?" the woman asked

A woman is regretting telling her line manager about her vacation plans.

Expressing her frustration on the online forum Mumsnet, the woman explained that she works for a medium-sized company in the U.K. that requires line managers to approve any paid time off. She said there are five people in her team and there have been no issues with booking vacations in the eight years that she's worked there.

However, last month, her former line manager was replaced by someone who previously worked in a different department. She thought her new manager's question about her vacation plans for the fall was "just a casual passing interest type question."

After telling them she will be would going on an almost five-hour flight, "They've now rejected my leave request because they don't think I'll be fit for work on Monday, returning from Tenerife on a Sunday on a flight that lands at 10.30 pm (at an airport 20 minutes from home)," the woman wrote.

The woman was in shock and confessed that she wasn't sure how to reply to her line manager.

"...AIBU [am I being unreasonable] for thinking it's up to me how I spend my annual leave and it's up to me to decide whether something is achievable whilst being ready for work the next day?" she asked.

In a follow-up comment, the woman added that she checked with her coworkers that no one else was on vacation before paying a deposit on the getaway.

The post quickly garnered hundreds of replies, with the majority of commenters agreeing that she shouldn't have to explain her time off plans to her employer.

One person wrote, "WHAT?!! Absolutely none of their business, and they have no right to judge whether you'll be fit for work. I'm astonished they've given that as a reason to reject the request. Utterly bizarre. Are you supposed to just cancel your week in Tenerife then?"

Another said, "I would email your HR, cc'ing in your line manager, explain line manager has declined your leave request due to your return flight at 10:30 pm the night before is too late, and ask how many hours before your Monday shift/start time you need to be back in the country as you are moving your flights and what the company policy is."

https://ift.tt/2hP4bR3

A third chimed in, saying, "Or just lie and say you're now booked on an earlier flight. People like that don't deserve the truth."

Someone else added, "I've never heard such nonsense. What next, a memo to all staff telling them they must be in bed and lights out by 10 pm latest on work nights!"
