Two months after the start of hurricane season, something big may be brewing in the tropics.

In the 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025, tropics advisory from the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, a non-tropical area of low pressure (nicknamed AL95) in the western Atlantic about 180 miles off the coast of North Carolina may become a tropical or subtropical depression or storm Sunday or Monday while it moves east-northeast, away from North Carolina. And in the central tropical Atlantic, a tropical wave was forecast to move off the west coast of Africa.

A day earlier, "AL95" had formed along a frontal boundary about 150 miles off the coast of North Carolina, and its chances of formation had slightly increased. Although it appears close to North Carolina and South Carolina and increased to a 50% chance of cyclone formation as of Sunday, it's important to note that the tropical system is moving away from the coast.

The National Hurricane Center referenced the large tropical wave off the west coast of Africa (see graphic below) in its Saturday night tropics advisory on Aug. 2.

Additional slow development could occur through early next week.

The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 to Nov. 30 every year, with the most activity between August and October.

Should another weather system develop into a tropical storm, the system would be named Dexter, which is next on the list of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season names (see below).

In addition, the hurricane center is tracking two tropical waves in the Caribbean. Both are moving west and do not pose a threat at this time.

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season runs from Sunday, June 1, to Sunday, Nov. 30, with the most active months between August and October.

National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, forecast on tropical activity: Is there a tropical storm or hurricane now?

According to the 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025, tropics advisory from the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, here's information about "AL95" and "Disturbance 2":

In the western Atlantic (AL95, marked "orange" in the National Hurricane Center graphic):

A non-tropical area of low pressure located along a frontal boundary about 180 miles off the coast of North Carolina is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions are marginally conducive for this system to become a tropical or subtropical depression or storm today or on Monday while it moves east-northeastward at about 10 mph, away from the coast of North Carolina. After Monday, environmental conditions become less conducive for development.

Formation chance through 48 hours was medium at 50 percent.

Formation chance through 7 days was medium at 50 percent.

In the central tropical Atlantic ("Disturbance 2" is marked "yellow" in the National Hurricane Center graphic):

A tropical wave was forecast to move off the west coast of Africa in the next day or two. Thereafter, some gradual development of the wave is possible during the middle to latter part of next week while it moves generally west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic.

Formation chance through seven days was low at 30 percent.

Formation chance through 48 hours was low at nearly 0 percent.

In addition to AL95 and "Disturbance 2," National Hurricane Center forecasters are tracking two tropical waves in the Caribbean. At this time, they do not pose a threat:

A tropical wave is in the Caribbean, moving west. Scattered moderate convection (or rain) is occurring over Hispaniola and adjacent waters, including the Windward Passage.

A tropical wave is in the western Caribbean, moving west. No significant convection is observed in the vicinity of this wave.

The USA TODAY Network in Florida will produce daily tropics watch advisories.

(Jean-Christophe Bott/Keystone via AP)

CHATEL, France (AP) — French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt won the women's Tour de France at her first attempt on Sunday, launching an attack to clinch the final stage and increase her overnight lead.

It gave Ferrand-Prévôt a resounding victory. She finished 3 minutes, 42 seconds ahead of 2023 champion Demi Vollering of the Netherlands and 4:09 clear of defending champion Kasia Niewiadoma of Poland.

"After my Olympic title, I said I would try to win the Tour de France in the next three years," said the 33-year-old Ferrand-Prévôt, an Olympic champion in mountain biking at last year's Paris Games. "So here I am, the first (time)."

There was little of the drama of last year's final day, which produced a four-second winning margin for the narrowest victory in the history of the women's and men's races.

"My teammates worked super hard for me all week long. I just want to say thank you and congrats to them," said Ferrand-Prévôt, who rides for the Visma–Lease a Bike team. "I love you so much girls, and thank you for everything."

Ferrand-Prévôt had put herself largely in control by winning Saturday's eighth and penultimate stage with an audacious solo breakaway on the last climb. That gave her an overnight lead of 2:37 seconds over Australian rider Sarah Gigante and 3:18 over Vollering.

Sunday's ninth stage from Praz-sur-Arly to Châtel was a 124-kilometer (77-mile) trek featuring three big mountain climbs.

But Ferrand-Prévôt did not face any big attacks and instead launched one of her own with 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) left.

The crowds cheered her all the way to the finish line and, moments later, the tears flowed as she lay on her back, exhausted but elated.

Vollering was 20 seconds behind in second place and Niewiadoma followed in third place as they sprinted to the line.

Earlier, Ferrand-Prévôt was with Gigante and a few others when they tackled the mammoth climb up Col de Joux Plane — an 11.6-kilometer grind with a gradient of 8.5%.

Gigante is known to have trouble descending at speed and was dropped on the long downhill. She could not make the time up, especially with no teammates to help her, and lost her podium spot, finishing sixth overall.

Having won Olympic gold and conquered the cobblestones of the Paris-Roubaix classic, Ferrand-Prévôt added another line to her glittering resumé with a Tour victory, 11 years after winning the world road race title.

Mimi Rhodes, you wizard. Tip your cap.

On Sunday, whether it was designed or not, the young Ladies European Tour golfer masterfully played the par-3, 214-yard Hole 3 during the 2025 AIG Women's British Open at Royal Porthcawl in Porthcawl, Wales, for a hole-in-one.

Rhodes' ace, however, didn't come without some help, as it ricocheted off Stephanie Kyriacou's ball that was placed inches away from the hole to bounce in.

Noted by Golfweek, part of the USA TODAY Network, it is the second ace this week at the AIG Women's British Open, as Kyriacou made the first ace during Friday's second round competition on the par-3 eighth hole.

Despite her ace and several birdies, Rhodes, who has won three events on the LET this season, finished two over par in the final round of competition on Sunday. On the back nine alone, Rhodes recorded two bogies and a double bogey on the par-four sixth hole. At the time of this writing, Rhodes was tied for 19th on the leaderboard at one under par 288.

Braves outlast Reds, weather to win MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol

Steve Gardner, USA TODAY August 3, 2025 at 10:30 PM

After the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves were unable to make it through the first inning the night before, the two teams returned to Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 3, to complete MLB's inaugural Speedway Classic.

Under cloudy but clear skies, Braves outfielder Eli White hit a pair of home runs and minor-league call-up Hurston Waldrep pitched 5⅔ innings of one-run ball to lead the Braves to a 4-2 victory.

The history-making clash marked the first-ever major league game in the state of Tennessee and the first to be held at a NASCAR race track.

USA TODAY Sports provided running updates on how the game unfolded. Scroll below the gallery for a full recap.

Call-up Hurston Waldrep comes up big

A mere 24 hours earlier, Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep was preparing to make his scheduled start for the Class AAA Gwinett (Ga.) Stripers. But that was before rain forced the suspension of the Speedway Classic and his team needed some emergency pitching help.

Waldrep had to leave his teammates at 5 a.m. and head to Bristol, Tennessee, for his first MLB apprearance of the season. And not only that, he was told he'd be taking the mound when the game resumed.

Despite all that, Waldrep surpassed even the highest expectations by tossing 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball before exiting at the end of the sixth. If the Braves can hang on, Waldrep is in line for his first major league win.

Top 7th: Eli White goes deep again for Atlanta

Braves outfielder Eli White celebrates after hitting the first of his two home runs in Atlanta's 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the 2025 Speedway Classic at Brostol Motor Speedway.

Outfielder Eli White has provided the Braves with all the offense they've needed so far. Entering the game with only four home runs the entire season, White hit his second of the day in the top of the seventh, sending a Scott Barlow sinker 413 feet over the wall in left center for a 4-2 Atlanta advantage.

White was hitting .249 in 197 at-bats coming into the game.

Braves 3B Austin Riley exits early

Braves third baseman Austin Riley tags out the Reds' Elly De La Cruz at the plate during the bottom of the first inning of the MLB Speedway Classic in Bristol, Tennessee.

The Braves made an unexpected substitution in the top of the third inning when Luke Williams pinch-hit for third baseman Austin Riley.

There's been no official word on an injury to Riley, but he did seem a bit shaken up after diving to tag out Reds speedster Elly De La Cruz right before he touched home plate in the bottom of the first inning.

Riley had recently come off a stint on the injured list with an injury to his side. Braves manager Brian Snitker told the Fox Sports broadcast Riley "was feeling it a little bit" and he didn't want to risk making anything worse, so he removed his third baseman as a precaution.

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) August 3, 2025

Bottom 2nd: Braves 3, Reds 2

Cincinnati scored a single run for the second consecutive inning with Matt McLain -- who scored the game's first run on Saturday night -- driving in the Reds' second one on a sacrifice fly.

Catcher Tyler Stephenson drew a one-out walk, went to second on a single by Ke'Bryan Hayes and moved to third on a walk to TJ Friedl. McLain's fly ball to center field was deep enough for Stephenson to come home and cut the deficit to one run.

Top 2nd: Braves 3, Reds 1

Braves right fielder Eli White flipped the script in the top of the second inning as Atlanta mounted a two-out rally.

Following singles by Michael Harris and Ozzie Albies, White -- playing in place of injured All-Star Ronald Acuña Jr. -- deposited Brent Suter's changeup into the left field stands for a three-run homer.

Reds' Tyler Stephenson pays tribute to 'Talladega Nights'

Even though the two teams didn't even finish the first inning, there was one winner last night: Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson.

The inevitable comparisons between baseball and NASCAR throughout the broadcast couldn't compare to Stephenson's catching gear he had specifically created for this game.

— Jim Day (@JimDayTV) August 2, 2025

Stephenson paid tribute to Will Farrell's firesuit from the movie "Talladega Nights" with his Wonder Bread-inspired chest protector. And he continued the theme with some colorful cleats.

"I was just thinking of stuff to do and reached out to the EvoShield people," Stephenson told MLB.com. "I was thinking of a NASCAR theme – and 'Talladega Nights.' It's a classic movie. They did a great job and decided to wear it."

Braves, Reds make lineup, roster changes

The suspension of the Speedway Classic on Saturday night has forced both teams to make some pitching changes before they return to the field.

The Braves have promoted right-hander Hurston Waldrep from the minors and will have him take over on the mound with one out in the bottom of the first inning. Waldrep had been scheduled to start on Sunday for Class AAA Gwinnett.

The Reds have promoted pitcher Lyon Richardson from Class AAA Louisville and optioned outfielder Will Benson to give them an additional arm for the game. Manager Terry Francona said veteran reliever Brent Suter will take over when the Reds take the field in the top of the second.

Speedway Classic weather issues

Reds second baseman Matt McLain rounds third base on his way to score the first run of the Aug. 2 Speedway Classic against the Braves at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The Speedway Classic was set to start at 7:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, but rain began falling during pregame activities and the tarp was unrolled at 7:19 p.m. It remained there until skies cleared around 8:50 p.m.

The game eventually started at 9:40 p.m. ET, but since Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider had already gone through his pregame warmup routine, the team decided to scratch him in favor of reliever Austin Cox.

The Reds stuck with their original starter, Tennessee native Chase Burns, who retired the Braves in order in the top of the first.

— MLB (@MLB) August 3, 2025

But the skies began to open up once again – quickly turning the playing field into a quagmire as the Reds scored on Austin Hays' one-out RBI single. Play was halted immediately after that and ultimately suspended for the night.

Niche AI services

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the biggest trend in the markets today, and with so many companies providing exposure to it in different ways, it can be challenging to parse the best AI stocks to buy. What appeals to many investors are huge growth opportunities and technology that provides a moat. That's where Palantir comes in.

Some of the large AI companies like Nvidia and Amazon are already so big that it's debatable how much bigger they can get. Stocks generally move on growth, and the larger the foundation, the harder it is to increase it in percentages. Finding a younger company with growth prospects that can still move the needle can be much more attractive to growth investors.

Palantir provides an AI platform that organizes data, connecting data from different places to simplify complex operations. Its original product was built for government clients, but it now has a product for commercial use as well, which is growing quickly.

Its government and defense contracts give it stability and create a high barrier to entry, while the commercial platform in the U.S. is growing at a faster pace -- up 71% year over year in the 2025 first quarter, outpacing total company revenue growth of 39%. As more companies see the benefits of using AI, this segment has a long growth runway.

With total company revenue of only $3.1 billion over the trailing 12 months, Palantir could continue to enjoy high and profitable sales growth for many years, with a stock gain to match. That's something for investors to get excited about.

Should you invest $1,000 in Palantir Technologies right now?

Before you buy stock in Palantir Technologies, consider this:

The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Palantir Technologies wasn't one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could produce monster returns in the coming years.

New Jersey resident Mildred Baron, who turned 107 in June, is sharing her simple secret to a long and happy life

She said it's all about having a positive mindset

"Be very calm, be peaceful and adopt my saying: 'This too shall pass,' " she explained

For centenarian Mildred Baron, life is all about having a positive mindset.

The Freehold, N.J., resident, who celebrated her 107th birthday in June, is sharing her simple secret to enjoying a long and happy life.

"Be very calm, be peaceful and adopt my saying: 'This too shall pass,' " she told local outlet Asbury Park Press (APP).

Baron said that spirit has carried her through many ups and downs across the decades. Born in 1918 to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a toddler when the Prohibition era began in the U.S. She then experienced World War II, the Great Depression and the COVID-19 pandemic.

She recalled watching all of the men she knew get drafted into the war in '40s. "But as I said, that too, passed," she noted.

Baron also remembered standing in breadlines during the Great Depression and her mother feeding her family of five with a single sack of potatoes.

During WWII, Baron found a job in accounting and continued the occupation for 42 years until her retirement.

These days, she enjoys a full life that includes eating spicy foods, creating 3D art and attending afternoon cocktail parties with friends. After joking to APP that beer is her drink of choice, Baron quickly changed her answer to ginger ale.

"Can't go wrong with that," she said.

Baron also relishes time with family, including her 80-year-old daughter, Bonnie Greenstein, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Greenstein described her mother to APP as "intelligent" and "a talented artist [who] knows what's going on in the world."

"She just gets it," Greenstein told the outlet.

Shortly before her 100th birthday in 2018, Baron moved into the Applewood Village senior living community, where she is "always the life of the party," according to the residence's executive director, Keith Grady. "She's always been a concerned resident for others, just a real great neighbor to have," he said.

As for her hopes for the future, Baron told APP that she would "like to see peace in this world."

"All over," she said. "I don't think I'll see it, but hopefully it'll happen someday."

Baron is one of 2,367 residents in New Jersey who are 100 years old or older as of 2025, according to World Population Review. She is five years younger than the oldest verified living person in the state, 112-year-old Launa Mitchell of Lakewood, according to LongeviQuest.
