Tariffs putting the squeeze on businesses and consumers while bringing in billions of dollars for the United States government. A job market that is showing major signs of cracking even as the unemployment rate remains subdued. Tech stocks surging on Wall Street, fueled by the artificial intelligence boom — as many other sectors are ailing.

As Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on social media earlier this week: "the Trump economy has officially arrived."

The past week was already primed to be a doozy for data, with investors and analysts eagerly anticipating updates about economic growth, jobs and the Fed's latest interest rate decision. Major companies like Apple, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft reported their latest financial results. Trump's deadline for trade deals was set for Friday.

But what happened this week turned out to be more extraordinary than anyone expected.

"I'm sending off red flares: We're on the precipice of a recession," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, a financial research company. "If tariffs keep increasing, I don't know how we avoid a recession."

Coming into this week, the U.S. economy had generally been considered in good shape despite mounting uncertainty and concerns about slowing growth.

The week kicked off in Scotland with the announcement of a deal with the European Union that would set tariffs at 15%, ending months of uncertainty surrounding the United States' largest trade partner.

Trade talks then moved to Sweden, where leading officials from the U.S. and China held two days of negotiations. The talks yielded neither a deal nor a formal extension of the two countries' trade truce, which will expire Aug. 12.

"The meetings were very constructive," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters after the talks wrapped up. "It's just that we haven't given the sign-off."

Given the importance of trade relations between the world's two largest economies, the cliffhanger meant the cloud of uncertainty created by Trump's tariffs gambit persisted, despite some deals having been struck with other major trading partners including the European Union and Japan.

Tuesday offered little reason for renewed optimism, with the international shipping giant UPS again declining to issue financial forecasts for the rest of the year, prompting investor concern about the impact of Trump's shifting trade war and causing company shares to tank.

Wednesday began with the Commerce Department reporting figures for second-quarter gross domestic product, or GDP, which measures economic growth in the U.S. The data showed an annual gain of 3%, beating expectations. But the same report also contained worrisome signs about business investment, even as price growth was accelerating.

Later that day, the Federal Reserve announced it was keeping its benchmark interest rate unchanged, in part due to those inflation concerns. That drew the ire of Trump, who has spent weeks hounding Fed Chair Jerome Powell to lower the key lending rate. In remarks following the central bank's announcement, Powell pointed to ongoing concerns about the potential for Trump's tariffs to raise prices for U.S. consumers — but critically, referred to the jobs market as "solid." Notably, two members of the rate-setting board — both appointed by Trump — dissented, the first time that has occurred in more than three decades.

Blowout earnings from Microsoft and Facebook parent Meta — two companies at the center of the AI investment boom, which is a key part of Trump's domestic agenda — helped the stock market reach fresh highs early Thursday. Microsoft briefly became the second company to be worth more than $4 trillion on the stock market.

Yet by the time the markets closed that day, stocks had erased their gains after Trump sent letters to more than a dozen pharmaceutical companies demanding they offer U.S. customers more competitive pricing for new medicines and giving them 60 days to comply.

Late Thursday evening, Trump unveiled a sweeping new set of tariffs that unilaterally imposed higher import taxes on a host of trading partners, including allies like Canada and Taiwan. The new effective rate of more than 15% delivered a shock to global markets. The month closed with the Treasury Department reporting monthly tariff collections had hit another new record of more than $29 billion.

In an interview with NBC News that evening, Trump touted the expansive new tariffs, saying he believed it all was going "very well, very smooth," even as he remained open to new deals.

Then Friday's jobs report arrived.

At 8:30 a.m., the Bureau of Labor Statistics published revisions showing sharply lower jobs totals for May and June than initially reported, while also finding the economy had added just 73,000 jobs in July, far below expectations. All told, it suggested the U.S. has gained an average of just 35,000 jobs a month over the past three months — and excluding the increases seen in the health care industry, the U.S. had lost more jobs than it had created.

The unemployment rate, however, remained at 4.2%, a sign that overall joblessness remains subdued. However, many economists noted the data point is largely attributable to the president's immigration crackdown, which is shrinking the overall labor force.

The White House hailed the loss of foreign-born workers as it also noted a more sustained increase in the labor force among native-born workers.

"If we're swapping out foreign-born job holders for American-born job holders, I think that's a win," White House chief economic adviser Stephen Miran told Axios.

He added that there was "really good reason" to believe the economy would improve, citing Trump's trade deals and tax cuts.

But for Trump, the public's larger takeaway of a weakening labor market prompted an unprecedented response: Shortly after 2 p.m. ET on Friday, the president announced his intention to fire the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics over what he said were errors in the jobs data, as well as accusations the agency had "manipulated" the numbers prior to the 2024 election. Neither allegation has been corroborated.

The move sent shockwaves through Washington, with some experts warning it risked lowering the U.S. to the level of authoritarian regimes.

"President Trump is once again destroying the credibility of our government by firing expert and nonpartisan officials because he does not like the facts that they present," said Max Stier, the CEO of the nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service. "Governments that go down this path find themselves in ugly territory very quickly."

It was not clear whether the outgoing BLS commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, a Biden administration appointee, would seek to challenge her removal in court. As it turns out, in addition to nominating a new head of the critical data agency, Trump will also get to name a new member to the Fed's rate-setting board after Adriana Kugler, another Joe Biden appointee, unexpectedly announced her resignation late Friday. Both nominees still must be confirmed by the Senate, which remains narrowly controlled by the GOP.

Asked if the White House continued to harbor concerns about the direction of the economy, Kush Desai, a White House spokesman, issued the following statement:

"In his first term, President Trump used an America First economic agenda to deliver historic working class prosperity and the first reduction in wealth and income inequality in decades. In his [second] term, President Trump is implementing the very same policy mix of deregulation, fairer trade, and pro-growth tax cuts at an even bigger scale — as these policies take effect, the best is yet to come."

That view is not shared among other economists.

"All of this is troubling: a weakening economy, slowing labor market, rising inflation, rising tariffs, political influence on a statistical agency, more political influence on Fed, tensions with Russia & the onset of a market correction," EY Parthenon chief economist Greg Daco wrote on X.

The shirt featured a drawing of a pink cat with the words "F--- Off"

The woman shared her story on a community forum, where people were divided over whether the shirt went too far

A woman says she recently saw a teenage girl wearing a shirt that she found completely inappropriate — and she's wondering if other people feel the same.

She detailed her story in a post on Mumsnet.com, a U.K.-based community site where women can seek advice on a variety of topics. In her post, titled "[Am I being unreasonable] to think that approaching people while wearing this shirt is unacceptable?" the woman asked, explaining that she and her 7-year-old daughter were out for a walk in a local neighborhood at the time.

She said that during their walk, they stopped to pet a cat when "a teenage girl who was standing outside her house vaping crossed the road to tell us the cat's name, names of other cats in the area, etc."

"She was basically being very friendly and informative," the woman said.

However, the original poster (OP) said that the girl was wearing a shirt that featured a pink cat and the words, "F--- Off."

The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now!

"My 7-year-old is well aware of this word as a swear word, but I do try to limit her exposure to it and feel that if you're wearing a t-shirt like this, you should not be initiating a conversation with a 7-year-old," the OP continued.

"I didn't raise it with the girl — mainly because her conversation was so friendly, but it was a weird juxtaposition which made me and my [daughter] uncomfortable," she said, adding that her daughter asked her why the teen was wearing the shirt "several times" after the encounter.

"[I] just feel a t-shirt like this shouldn't be allowed to be worn in public," she said at the end of her post.

A number of post commenters said that they personally would not be bothered by the encounter, and several people even found the OP's description of the teen endearing.

"Bless her. The walking contradiction that is teenagers," one person said.

"Teenagers vaping and wearing rebellious clothing isn't groundbreaking. At least not where I live. They're still kids who are figuring things out," said someone else.

Another person said, "It wouldn't bother me. Children can hear and read swear words without using those words themselves."

Others said that they thought the OP's feelings were valid and that good manners exist for a reason.

"I agree with you, OP," one person said. "I don't like it when people swear in public spaces, especially spaces where children are [...]. It's unnecessary."

The same person added, "No one is claiming anyone will fall over and die if they see or hear the word 'f---,' but it's the gradual erosion of civil standards that leaves communities slightly worse off. If 'f--- off' is okay, [then] what about a t-shirt that says 'f--- off, c---'?' "

"You maintain standards to stop the slow descent into 'the state of nature.' [Standards] might seem silly or pointless, but they are a fence," they added.

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Rescue teams found a body inside a section of a Chilean copper mine that collapsed two days earlier during a moderate earthquake, the mine's director said Saturday.

Rescuers have been trying to reach five miners who were trapped Thursday evening in the El Teniente mine in central Chile as rocks collapsed around them during a 4.2 magnitude quake. The copper mine is one of Chile's largest.

A spokesman for the rescue team that is trying to drill through 90 meters (295 feet) of rock to reach the miners said the body found on Saturday is one of the five miners who were trapped in the mine. El Teniente Director Andres Music said authorities were still trying to identify the body.

The body of another miner — not one of the five still trapped — identified as Paulo Marin Tapia was found Friday, shortly after the mine's partial collapse.

Nine other mine workers suffered injuries, said Chile's National Copper Corp., known as Codelco, describing the incident as a result of "a seismic event."

The US Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing to end certain abortion services to veterans, rolling back a Biden-era move to expand abortion rights.

In a proposed rule filed Friday, the department said that it is seeking to revoke access to abortions and abortion counseling for veterans and the beneficiaries of the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"We take this action to ensure that VA provides only needed medical services to our nation's heroes and their families," the department said in the filing.

Under the Biden administration's rule, the department currently provides access to abortions when a pregnant veteran's life or health is at risk if their pregnancy were carried to term, or if the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest — regardless of state laws.

The proposed rule would allow abortions in cases where "a physician certifies that the life of the mother would be endangered if the fetus were carried to term," which, according to the filing, had been permitted even before the 2022 expansion.

The Biden-era rule was part of the administration's efforts to expand abortion access after Republican-led states pushed ahead with restrictions in the wake of the 2022 Supreme Court ruling that eliminated the federal right to an abortion.

The VA argued at the time that it was necessary to give veterans access to abortions, saying, "As abortion bans come into force across the country, veterans in many States are no longer assured access to abortion services in their communities, even when those services are needed."

But on Friday, President Donald Trump's VA slammed the Biden administration's rule, calling it federal overreach.

"The stated reason for (the expansion) was a reaction to a Supreme Court decision, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization … that itself was intended to prevent federal overreach and return to States control over the provision of abortion services," the filing states. "Yet, the last administration used Dobbs to do the exact opposite of preventing overreach, creating a purported Federal entitlement to abortion for veterans where none had existed before and without regard to State law."

Twenty states have banned or limited access to abortion. States where abortion is limited report higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, as well as greater economic insecurity.

The proposed rule will now be open for public comment for 30 days starting Monday.

In his first term, Trump made good on campaign promises and appointed Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade. Since that ruling, Trump has been keen to leave regulations over the issue to state governments.

The Trump administration has overall been quiet on the issue of abortion in his second term. However, in June, the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services moved to rescind a 2022 federal guidance to health care providers specifying that people should be able to access an abortion in the event of a medical emergency, even if state laws restrict such procedures.

CNN's Veronica Stracqualursi and Jen Christensen contributed to this report.

Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson

Every time a Hollywood power couple emerges, this entertainment journalist rejoices.

My favorite dopamine hit this week came courtesy of Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson, a couple that seems so improbable and yet so right. Even though I did not see this coming even 14 days ago, I am now cheering them on to go the distance (should they choose to, of course).

Rumors that these two were an item began circulating earlier this month as they embarked on the promo tour for their upcoming film, The Naked Gun. The movie, which premiered on Aug. 1, was heralded by early viewers for its hilarity and irreverence, and it seems the chemistry Anderson and Neeson — who play love interests — had onscreen translated offscreen. During their press tour, the two were pictured getting close, staring deeply into each other's eyes and planting kisses on each other — apparently to fake us out … or ... not?

And while they decided to play it coy when asked if they were an item on the Today show, a source confirmed to PEOPLE on July 29 that they are, in fact, dating. "It's a budding romance in the early stages," an insider told PEOPLE. "It's sincere, and it's clear they're smitten with each other."

Dia Dipasupil/Getty

Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson

What's great about this coupling is that it just feels like the heavens are proving that good things happen for good people, as both stars have had their fair share of public heartbreak.

Anderson's history of tumultuous relationships is no secret. She's been married five times, most prominently to Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, from 1995 to 1998. They welcomed two sons, Brandon, 27, and Dylan, 26, over the course of their rocky marriage.

Related: https://ift.tt/2hP4bR3

And while she admitted to being deeply in love with Lee, their relationship was marred by too much public scrutiny and legal woes to really stand a chance. One domestic dispute in particular found Lee charged with felony spousal abuse; he was sentenced to six months in jail.

"The divorce from Tommy was the hardest, lowest, most difficult point of my life," Anderson wrote in her memoir, Love, Pamela. "I was crushed. I still couldn't believe that the person I loved the most was capable of what had happened that night. We were both devastated, but I had to protect my babies."

Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson

In the years since, Anderson has led a quiet life raising her two boys and eventually relocating to British Columbia, where she bought, renovated and has made a home out of a motel once owned by her grandparents.

For someone who was brutally judged by the public, she's managed to build her career back brick by brick with the release of her well-received memoir, subsequent Netflix documentary and a successful Broadway run, all culminating in her SAG and Golden Globe nominations for The Last Showgirl, earlier this year. Now, her latest project has led her to a new love and I am here for it.

The world shared in Neeson's devastation when in 2009, his wife of 15 years, Natasha Richardson, had died of an epidural hematoma after hitting her head in a skiing accident. The couple shared two boys, Micheál, 30, and Daniel, 28. Since Richardson's death, Neeson's public romantic life has been mostly quiet; asked in 2024 if he was interested in dating, the Taken actor told PEOPLE, "No, in a word. I'm past all that."

So, with all this background, it feels especially serendipitous that these two would fall for each other on a movie set, at this point in their lives.

Kristina Bumphrey/Variety via Getty

Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson with their respective sons

They're both well-established in their careers, working mostly for the love of the craft and not necessarily for the fame or money. Their children are launched and they've both expressed contentment with the way their lives are going, making a new romance a serendipitous, happy surprise, but not necessarily something they needed to feel complete.

With Anderson being 58 and Neeson being 73, their 15-year age gap doesn't feel inappropriate, which is quite refreshing. It feels as though there's a healthy maturity in the relationship, one that comes with having weathered the ups and downs of career, life, parenthood, love, loss and everything in between.

With all the heartbreak Anderson and Neeson have had to endure, this story — which feels like it's straight out of a Nora Ephron movie — gives, dare I say, all of us, a reason to believe in love. Neeson is known by those he works with to be a gentleman, soft spoken and beloved by his exes; he appears to be quite different temperamentally than her previous partners. Anderson is fun and has always lived life on her own terms and can bring some of her spontaneity to his more straight-laced persona.

Here's hoping for true love to win (and for their film to be a huge hit, so we can see their chemistry onscreen again in a sequel).

The Naked Gun is available in theaters on August 1.

Josh Brolin in 1985's 'The Goonies'

Josh Brolin has mixed feelings about making a sequel to The Goonies.

The actor recently explained why he's hesitant to follow up the 1985 adventure classic, in which he starred as a teen, with a new chapter.

"I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great," he told Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his new film, Weapons, this week. "The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It's just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don't want to taint what my memory of it [is]."

Brolin then spitballed about what The Goonies 2 might look like with central cast as adults. "It's like, 'Oh, we came out with another,' and then the Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn't see very well," he joked. "What are you going to do? I don't know."

However, Brolin acknowledged that The Goonies 2 could work if it had the full blessing of the film's original producer and co-writer, Steven Spielberg. "Maybe it could be great. If it's great, you'll know," he said. "If Spielberg approves it, you know it's going to be good."

But Brolin added that a number of Goonies follow-up screenplays have hit Spielberg's desk in the four decades since the first movie, and, from his recollection, none have met his standards. "I think there's been five scripts so far through the years and he hasn't approved anything yet," the actor explained. "Spielberg is picky, and he has a reason to be because he has great taste."

In the original Goonies, Brolin portrayed Brandon Walsh, the big brother to Sean Astin's young Mikey, who reluctantly accompanies his brother's gaggle of buddies (played by Ke Huy Quan, Corey Feldman, and Jeff Cohen) on their quest to find the treasure of the pirate One-Eyed Willy.

At a virtual cast and crew reunion in 2020, Spielberg confirmed that numerous sequel concepts have been floated, but they just haven't been up to snuff. "Every couple of years, we come up with an idea, but then it doesn't hold water," he said. "The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre. I don't think we've really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the '80s."

However, in February, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that The Goonies 2 is in the works at Warner Bros., and that Spielberg is among its producers, along with his Amblin colleagues Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario, as well as the original film's writer, Chris Columbus. Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry, Still the King) is writing the screenplay for the sequel.

Shortly before the sequel's announcement, Brolin reunited with Cohen, Feldman, Columbus, and Kerri Green to support Quan at his hand-and-footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.

Casting for The Goonies 2 has not yet been announced, but at least three cast members are game to reprise their roles. After winning the award for Best Supporting Actor for Everything Everywhere All at Once in January 2023, Quan told journalists in the Golden Globes press room that he would be open to reprising his character, Data, if given the chance.

Additionally, Astin shared a fake poster for a Goonies sequel in 2024, suggesting that he was interested in revisiting the franchise. "It's our time," the Lord of the Rings star wrote in his caption.

And Robert Davi, who played the villainous Jake Fratelli in the first film, said he wants to join the sequel but is "concerned" that his outspoken support of President Trump may cost him the opportunity. "I do hope I'm part of it," he said of the sequel in an interview with Fox Digital. "I hope that they don't hold my politics against me and keep me from that project."

Slow tropical development is possible off the Southeast or mid-Atlantic coasts over the next few days.

A sluggish cold front is pushing through the South this weekend and an area of low pressure is expected to develop along it.

These areas of spin can, on occasion, generate sustained thunderstorms and an area of spin as they move northeastward away from the Southeast.

(MORE: 5 Different Ways Tropical Storms And Hurricanes Can Form, Including From Tropical Waves To Gyres)

Formation into a tropical depression or storm is currently possible Sunday or Monday. This is also a favored area for development climatologically.

Tropical Development Potential

Regardless of tropical development, the frontal boundary that gives us this opportunity for development will also pool abundant moisture and cooler air across the Southeast.

The moisture could be enough to cause flooding in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina or Tennessee this weekend. Parts of coastal Georgia and southern South Carolina, in particular, could see areas of flood where 3-6 inches of rain accumulate.

The next named storm to form will be named "Dexter."

In addition to this area, the National Hurricane Center is watching a tropical wave for development over the next week. For now, it is no threat to land.

Southeast, Lesser Antilles Favored Development Areas In August

A steep increase in tropical activity has historically occurred over the next 4-6 weeks across the Atlantic basin.

Tropical development can occur anywhere from the Gulf and Southeast coasts to the Central Atlantic and even off the coast of Canada.

(MORE: Hurricane Season's Main Event: Why August Typically Kicks Off The Atlantic's Most Active Time)

This is because water temperatures are near their annual peak, Saharan air has typically mixed out, wind shear is decreasing and instability across the basin is high. These are all favorable conditions for tropical formation.
