Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson

Every time a Hollywood power couple emerges, this entertainment journalist rejoices.

My favorite dopamine hit this week came courtesy of Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson, a couple that seems so improbable and yet so right. Even though I did not see this coming even 14 days ago, I am now cheering them on to go the distance (should they choose to, of course).

Rumors that these two were an item began circulating earlier this month as they embarked on the promo tour for their upcoming film, The Naked Gun. The movie, which premiered on Aug. 1, was heralded by early viewers for its hilarity and irreverence, and it seems the chemistry Anderson and Neeson — who play love interests — had onscreen translated offscreen. During their press tour, the two were pictured getting close, staring deeply into each other's eyes and planting kisses on each other — apparently to fake us out … or ... not?

And while they decided to play it coy when asked if they were an item on the Today show, a source confirmed to PEOPLE on July 29 that they are, in fact, dating. "It's a budding romance in the early stages," an insider told PEOPLE. "It's sincere, and it's clear they're smitten with each other."

What's great about this coupling is that it just feels like the heavens are proving that good things happen for good people, as both stars have had their fair share of public heartbreak.

Anderson's history of tumultuous relationships is no secret. She's been married five times, most prominently to Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, from 1995 to 1998. They welcomed two sons, Brandon, 27, and Dylan, 26, over the course of their rocky marriage.

And while she admitted to being deeply in love with Lee, their relationship was marred by too much public scrutiny and legal woes to really stand a chance. One domestic dispute in particular found Lee charged with felony spousal abuse; he was sentenced to six months in jail.

"The divorce from Tommy was the hardest, lowest, most difficult point of my life," Anderson wrote in her memoir, Love, Pamela. "I was crushed. I still couldn't believe that the person I loved the most was capable of what had happened that night. We were both devastated, but I had to protect my babies."

Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson

In the years since, Anderson has led a quiet life raising her two boys and eventually relocating to British Columbia, where she bought, renovated and has made a home out of a motel once owned by her grandparents.

For someone who was brutally judged by the public, she's managed to build her career back brick by brick with the release of her well-received memoir, subsequent Netflix documentary and a successful Broadway run, all culminating in her SAG and Golden Globe nominations for The Last Showgirl, earlier this year. Now, her latest project has led her to a new love and I am here for it.

The world shared in Neeson's devastation when in 2009, his wife of 15 years, Natasha Richardson, had died of an epidural hematoma after hitting her head in a skiing accident. The couple shared two boys, Micheál, 30, and Daniel, 28. Since Richardson's death, Neeson's public romantic life has been mostly quiet; asked in 2024 if he was interested in dating, the Taken actor told PEOPLE, "No, in a word. I'm past all that."

So, with all this background, it feels especially serendipitous that these two would fall for each other on a movie set, at this point in their lives.

Kristina Bumphrey/Variety via Getty

Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson with their respective sons

They're both well-established in their careers, working mostly for the love of the craft and not necessarily for the fame or money. Their children are launched and they've both expressed contentment with the way their lives are going, making a new romance a serendipitous, happy surprise, but not necessarily something they needed to feel complete.

With Anderson being 58 and Neeson being 73, their 15-year age gap doesn't feel inappropriate, which is quite refreshing. It feels as though there's a healthy maturity in the relationship, one that comes with having weathered the ups and downs of career, life, parenthood, love, loss and everything in between.

With all the heartbreak Anderson and Neeson have had to endure, this story — which feels like it's straight out of a Nora Ephron movie — gives, dare I say, all of us, a reason to believe in love. Neeson is known by those he works with to be a gentleman, soft spoken and beloved by his exes; he appears to be quite different temperamentally than her previous partners. Anderson is fun and has always lived life on her own terms and can bring some of her spontaneity to his more straight-laced persona.

Here's hoping for true love to win (and for their film to be a huge hit, so we can see their chemistry onscreen again in a sequel).

The Naked Gun is available in theaters on August 1.

Josh Brolin in 1985's 'The Goonies'

Josh Brolin has mixed feelings about making a sequel to The Goonies.

The actor recently explained why he's hesitant to follow up the 1985 adventure classic, in which he starred as a teen, with a new chapter.

"I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great," he told Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his new film, Weapons, this week. "The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It's just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don't want to taint what my memory of it [is]."

Brolin then spitballed about what The Goonies 2 might look like with central cast as adults. "It's like, 'Oh, we came out with another,' and then the Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn't see very well," he joked. "What are you going to do? I don't know."

However, Brolin acknowledged that The Goonies 2 could work if it had the full blessing of the film's original producer and co-writer, Steven Spielberg. "Maybe it could be great. If it's great, you'll know," he said. "If Spielberg approves it, you know it's going to be good."

But Brolin added that a number of Goonies follow-up screenplays have hit Spielberg's desk in the four decades since the first movie, and, from his recollection, none have met his standards. "I think there's been five scripts so far through the years and he hasn't approved anything yet," the actor explained. "Spielberg is picky, and he has a reason to be because he has great taste."

In the original Goonies, Brolin portrayed Brandon Walsh, the big brother to Sean Astin's young Mikey, who reluctantly accompanies his brother's gaggle of buddies (played by Ke Huy Quan, Corey Feldman, and Jeff Cohen) on their quest to find the treasure of the pirate One-Eyed Willy.

At a virtual cast and crew reunion in 2020, Spielberg confirmed that numerous sequel concepts have been floated, but they just haven't been up to snuff. "Every couple of years, we come up with an idea, but then it doesn't hold water," he said. "The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre. I don't think we've really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the '80s."

However, in February, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that The Goonies 2 is in the works at Warner Bros., and that Spielberg is among its producers, along with his Amblin colleagues Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario, as well as the original film's writer, Chris Columbus. Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry, Still the King) is writing the screenplay for the sequel.

Shortly before the sequel's announcement, Brolin reunited with Cohen, Feldman, Columbus, and Kerri Green to support Quan at his hand-and-footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.

Casting for The Goonies 2 has not yet been announced, but at least three cast members are game to reprise their roles. After winning the award for Best Supporting Actor for Everything Everywhere All at Once in January 2023, Quan told journalists in the Golden Globes press room that he would be open to reprising his character, Data, if given the chance.

Additionally, Astin shared a fake poster for a Goonies sequel in 2024, suggesting that he was interested in revisiting the franchise. "It's our time," the Lord of the Rings star wrote in his caption.

And Robert Davi, who played the villainous Jake Fratelli in the first film, said he wants to join the sequel but is "concerned" that his outspoken support of President Trump may cost him the opportunity. "I do hope I'm part of it," he said of the sequel in an interview with Fox Digital. "I hope that they don't hold my politics against me and keep me from that project."

Slow tropical development is possible off the Southeast or mid-Atlantic coasts over the next few days.

A sluggish cold front is pushing through the South this weekend and an area of low pressure is expected to develop along it.

These areas of spin can, on occasion, generate sustained thunderstorms and an area of spin as they move northeastward away from the Southeast.

(MORE: 5 Different Ways Tropical Storms And Hurricanes Can Form, Including From Tropical Waves To Gyres)

Formation into a tropical depression or storm is currently possible Sunday or Monday. This is also a favored area for development climatologically.

Tropical Development Potential

Regardless of tropical development, the frontal boundary that gives us this opportunity for development will also pool abundant moisture and cooler air across the Southeast.

The moisture could be enough to cause flooding in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina or Tennessee this weekend. Parts of coastal Georgia and southern South Carolina, in particular, could see areas of flood where 3-6 inches of rain accumulate.

The next named storm to form will be named "Dexter."

In addition to this area, the National Hurricane Center is watching a tropical wave for development over the next week. For now, it is no threat to land.

Southeast, Lesser Antilles Favored Development Areas In August

A steep increase in tropical activity has historically occurred over the next 4-6 weeks across the Atlantic basin.

Tropical development can occur anywhere from the Gulf and Southeast coasts to the Central Atlantic and even off the coast of Canada.

(MORE: Hurricane Season's Main Event: Why August Typically Kicks Off The Atlantic's Most Active Time)

This is because water temperatures are near their annual peak, Saharan air has typically mixed out, wind shear is decreasing and instability across the basin is high. These are all favorable conditions for tropical formation.

An individual that threw a sex toy onto the court during the Golden State Valkyries' 77-75 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday at Gateway Center in College Park, Georgia, has been arrested, the WNBA confirmed to USA TODAY on Saturday.

The incident happened in the final minute of Tuesday's contest as the Dream and Valkyries were tied at 75. The lime green object was thrown from the stands onto the court and landed near the top of the free throw line shortly after Atlanta's Maya Caldwell blocked a 3-point attempt from Golden State's Tiffany Hayes. Officials did not stop play as the object bounced toward the sidelines. A police officer later picked the item up using a towel.

Days later, another sex toy was thrown onto the court during the Golden State's 73-66 victory over the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Friday. The incident happened with 7:42 remaining in the third quarter as the Sky led 39-37. Officials immediately halted play after a green object landed out of bounds under the basket.

"The subject involved in the incident in Atlanta on Tuesday has been arrested," the WNBA said in a statement to USA TODAY on Saturday.

A number of WNBA players have spoken out against the string of incidents. Sky center Elizabeth Williams said it's "super disrespectful," while Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said flying objects could "hurt one of us."

"I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up," Williams said following Friday's game. New York Liberty forward Isabelle Harrison added, "ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??! Please do better. It's not funny. never was funny. Throwing ANYTHING on the court is so dangerous."

The WNBA said any spectator caught throwing anything on the court will be "immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban," in addition to facing charges.

"The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league," the WNBA said. "Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans. In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities."

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko delivered the biggest victory of her career on Saturday when she dominated top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open in Montreal.

Mboko needed just 62 minutes to dispose of the two-time Grand Slam champion.

"It's incredible," Mboko said in French in her on-court interview, according to the WTA. "I'm so happy to beat such a great champion."

Mboko, 18, received a wild card entry into the tournament and has dropped just one set in four matches. She is the youngest Canadian quarterfinalist at this event since 17-year-old Helen Kelesi in 1987.

Mboko began the year ranked No. 333. She was at No. 85 entering this event and rose to No. 53 with the win over Gauff.

Mboko, a Toronto resident, saved all five of her break-point opportunities and converted 4 of 5 against Gauff. She won 15 of 27 points (55.6 percent) against Gauff's second serve.

"Coming into the match, I was so locked in," Mboko said in a postmatch interview with Sportsnet. "I tried to keep my composure as much as I could, especially playing in front of so many people. This is a very special experience for me."

In May, Gauff lost the first set in a second-round match in Rome against Mboko before rallying to win the next two.

The second meeting belonged to Mboko.

"I'm sure we're going to have many more battles in the future," Gauff said after the loss. "Yeah, I think she's going to have a lot of success on tour."

Gauff again had troubles with her serve as she committed six double faults for a three-match tournament total of 43.

In the second round, she had 23 while narrowly beating Danielle Collins in a third-set tiebreaker in the second round and then followed up with 14 in a three-set, third-round win over Russia's Veronika Kudermetova.

Mkobo will face unseeded Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the quarters. The Spaniard beat China's Lin Zhu 7-5, 1-6, 6-2. Bouzas Maneiro had all seven of the match's aces and saved half of the 16 break points she faced while converting nine of the 13 chances she had to break Zhu.

No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 victory over No. 30 Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine.

Rybakina overcame nine double faults while recording seven aces and converting 5 of 9 break points.

Yastremska was one game away from winning before Rybakina won the final three games. The clincher came when she converted her fourth-match point attempt of the decisive game.

Yastremska had four aces against seven double faults.

Rybakina will face No. 24 seed Marta Kostyuk on Monday. The Ukrainian rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 28 McCartney Kessler.

Both players had substantial serving issues. Kostyuk scored the lone ace of the match but had 10 double faults. Kessler was worse with 12.

Kessler pulled within 4-3 in the third set before Kostyuk won the final two games to sew up the win.

Damian Lillard is staying true to his roots this offseason. Less than two weeks after the team he spent his first 11 NBA seasons with officially welcomed him home with an introductory press conference, Lillard announced he's going to take over as the general manager of his college alma mater.

The Portland Trail Blazers star broke the news Saturday in Ogden, Utah, where he hosted the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic for the sixth time.

"It's something that, my relationship with coach [Eric] Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program means a lot to me," Lillard said at the event, per the Standard-Examiner.

"I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that's something that I'm passionate about."

— Weber State Men's Basketball (@WeberStateMBB) August 3, 2025

Lillard played for Weber State from 2008-2012. During his senior season, he averaged 24.5 points per game while shooting 44.6% from the field, including 40.9% from 3. In the process, he won Big Sky Player of the Year for the second time and became a third-team All-American.

The Blazers selected him No. 6 overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. Lillard immediately made an impact, collecting NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 2013. He's a nine-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA 3-Point Contest champion, and he has five top-10 MVP finishes.

Lillard signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the Blazers after the Milwaukee Bucks waived him at the start of free agency.

Lillard, 35, is still owed $113 million from the Bucks, whom he wasn't able to win a championship with in his two seasons in Milwaukee. He ruptured his left Achilles in Game 4 of the team's first-round series against the Indiana Pacers.

Lillard isn't expected to play during the 2025-26 season. He'll likely serve as a quasi-assistant coach for the Blazers while he recovers.

But now he has another non-playing role.

In a news release, Weber State said Lillard "will work closely with the coaching staff and athletic department leadership to provide insight, mentorship, and guidance, using his experience at the collegiate and professional levels to elevate the program."

In 2015, Lillard finished his degree at Weber State. His No. 1 jersey was retired two years later. Four years after that, in 2021, he was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

"College athletics is constantly evolving, and building a strong program requires time, trust, and commitment," Lillard said in that same news release.

"I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State. The support of our community is vital to the program's success, and I am committed to playing a greater role in that effort."

He added: "This opportunity allows me to be even more involved in shaping the future of Weber State basketball."

Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in 'Dirty Dancing'

Patrick Swayze had anything but the time of his life when his Dirty Dancing costar Jennifer Grey couldn't stop giggling while filming a key scene, according to the movie's choreographer.

Kenny Ortega looked back on the ordeal in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, recalling the montage sequence of Swayze's Johnny teaching Grey's Baby how to dance. Her family is vacationing at a resort in the Catskills, where Johnny is a professional dancer, and she ends up stepping in for his regular partner at one of his must-do assignments. He's already not in love with the arrangement, but Baby truly annoys him during their practice when she can't get through the part of the routine where his hand brushes her underarm.

"This moment where he's tickling her, she's literally losing herself," Ortega said. "We're in a tin building. It's freezing cold. It's 4 o'clock in the morning. Patrick is so tired and wanting to go home. And every time he does this, she's giggling, and the look on his face. No one directed that."

Fortunately for all involved, Dirty Dancing proved to be a hit, launching Swayze and Grey to new levels of stardom and setting Ortega up for a long career as a choreographer, director, and producer. (His other credits include Newsies, Hocus Pocus, and High School Musical.) Nearly 40 years later, Grey is also set to star in a yet-untitled Dirty Dancing legacy sequel, which she wants to "honor" Swayze, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2009.

Back in 2020, Grey herself reflected on the infamous tickling scene and named it as one of her favorites.

"I really like the way that Emile [Ardolino], the director, captured some of the dynamics between Patrick and me," she told Woman's Day. "When you see him tickling me, and you see how frustrated he was when he looks at me because I cannot stop laughing because I'm ticklish — and then as soon as someone tells you not to laugh it makes you almost anxious and you can't stop laughing — there's something about that realness of that moment being caught."

Beyond the tickle scene, it's well known that Grey and Swayze weren't crazy about working together again, having previously costarred in the 1984 action flick Red Dawn.

"I was cast first, and I thought the part of Johnny Castle was going to be some swarthy, young Latin New Yorker, dangerous type. Not this guy that I just did Red Dawn with from Texas, who's, you know, really bossy and played pranks," Grey told PEOPLE in 2022. "I was scared, because it was my first lead, and I wanted to make sure it would really work. And I knew that I had no chemistry with him, and I knew that I didn't really feel like he was my cup of tea."

Thankfully for both of them, moviegoers disagreed.
