Henry Holland (pictured) and Sandrine Ferron Zhang have combined their talents on a capsule collection of six pieces of vintage furniture

The fashion designer-turned-ceramicist Henry Holland has a novel way of shopping for furniture for his home in east London.

Using the "wishlist" function on the second-hand furniture marketplace Vinterior, he and his husband David shortlist items they like, by room. Their tastes don't always align, so then: "we each go in and delete the things we don't like, and what we're left with is what we end up buying," explains Holland.

He has an affection for vintage furniture – in fact, he grew up surrounded by the stuff. His late mother, Stephanie, was an antiques dealer who filled her French château with treasures from brocantes.

"When it came to decorating my first rented studio flat, I'd go to my mum's with a van and bring back the leftovers – there was a barn full of them," he recalls.

Hiring a van is still something Holland occasionally does if making a pilgrimage to Sunbury Antiques Market, but it requires planning and a 4am start.

The last time, he returned practically empty-handed; which is why these days he uses websites such as Vinterior, which was founded by Sandrine Zhang Ferron, a vintage fan herself, who left her previous job in finance to launch it in 2014. Today, it collates inventory from 10,000 antiques dealers.

Ferron Zhang and Holland have pooled their talents to work together on a small collection of six pieces of vintage furniture (available from 6th August), which Holland has upcycled using his own-design fabrics for the British textile house Harlequin: think graphic checks, nostalgic archival prints and marbled patterns.

Here, he and Zhang Ferron share their tips for how to make well-loved classics work in a contemporary setting – and how old furniture can be reinvigorated with a little imagination and a skilled upholsterer.

What to look for when buying vintage

"I love pieces that have a story, and I like imagining what kind of homes they've been in," says Holland.

When searching, he will look past questionable handles or a dated fabric choice: "Don't get bogged down with the detail of existing pieces – focus on the shape and silhouette because you can change everything else," he advises.

Reupholstery is an obvious way to update a pre-loved item and take it into the 21st century - Oliver White-Smith

He keeps an open mind by searching broadly by item, rather than by era.

For example, while his husband might suggest a "1930s-style wall cabinet" for storage, Holland will simply trawl through wall cabinets as a category. "Avoid being too prescriptive, because there's such an amazing range of stuff out there that can really spark inspiration," he says.

Holland and Zhang Ferron agree that any marks form part of an item's charm and add to its story – but also, that taking accurate measurements is crucial. "Remember, these aren't flatpack pieces," Zhang Ferron points out.

How to choose fabrics for a new look

Reupholstery is an obvious way to update a pre-loved item and take it into the 21st century.

"A new fabric brings new energy and you can fall in love with a piece all over again," says Zhang Ferron. While buying second-hand is better for the planet, it's often better value for money, too, so there might be more left in the kitty to indulge in an extra-special fabric.

'A new fabric brings new energy and you can fall in love with a piece all over again,' says Zhang Ferron - Oliver White-Smith

A pair of angular Art Deco armchairs from Holland's wishlist got what he calls "the Battenburg treatment" with a graphic chequerboard fabric, while a pair of bentwood chairs by the mid-century designer Jindrich Halabala lent themselves to an abstract floral pattern rich in movement.

"If anything is rounded or organic and your fabric has straight lines, you'll lose a lot of the pattern unless you have an incredible upholsterer who is able to create lots of darts," warns Holland.

The application of piping (a narrow, decorative tube of fabric used as a trim) also requires consideration and can be just as dazzling as a print: on a pair of diminutive footstools, green piping makes the rounded edges pop. As Holland puts it: "Clever piping can be a great way to hide a lot of sins."

Other clever nips and tweaks

Reupholstery doesn't only apply to chairs and ottomans: inspired by the plush, fabric-covered doors in his own dressing room, Holland applied a little graphic magic to a compact teak wardrobe. "The cubic-shape handles worked really well with the chequerboard fabric," he says. Panels interlined with wadding were created and simply stuck onto the existing doors.

'The cubic-shape handles worked really well with the chequerboard fabric,' says Holland - Oliver White-Smith

At home, Holland has also enjoyed success reinvigorating the tops of side tables and storage units with offcuts of marble – he had one made for a 1920s dentist cabinet given to him by his mother.

"It's a relatively inexpensive trick to make something look much more expensive," he says.

He has also been known to have wooden furniture lacquered by a local car garage. Creating a densely pigmented, high-shine finish, traditional lacquering requires many coats, and lacquered pieces can fetch thousands. For a few hundred pounds, professional spray-painting achieves a similar transformation of an old piece.

Trust in the experts

When it comes to working with an upholsterer, "share as much as you can about how you plan to use the piece and your lifestyle: for instance, if you have children, or what the rest of the room looks like," says Zhang Ferron.

When recovering a battered armchair, she had a skinny stripe in mind, but her upholsterer suggested a chunkier alternative in a weightier finish and she is thrilled with the result.

Trust your upholsterer to guide you – they might spot details and solutions you'd never have thought of yourself - Oliver White-Smith

"I'd have never thought of it and I learnt a lot," she says.

Holland approaches the process just as collaboratively: "Let your upholsterer give you ideas; they will know the best way to execute something," he says.

What to avoid

Holland is wary of trends: "There was such a massive explosion of mid-century modern pieces a while back. If you buy into current trends, it won't look timeless," he warns.

Zhang Ferron suggests leaving leather pieces as they are, "because the cracks are part of the charm and that is hard to replicate."

Holland has first-hand experience of swapping out red leatherette fabric on a 1950s armchair for a patchwork of tapestries and isn't convinced it was a good move.

"In hindsight, the two styles were quite opposing – a graphic shape and traditional tapestry – and I'm not sure I'm as in love with it as much now," he reflects.

AYESHA ALIAugust 2, 2025 at 4:47 PM

The deadly mid-air collision at Reagan Airport in January was years in the making, the operations manager of the DCA air traffic control tower on the night of the accident told the National Transportation Safety Board on Friday.

"I don't think this accident occurred that night," Clark Allen, the operations manager, said at the investigative hearing. "I think it happened years before we've talked about, you know, resources, whether they were available or unavailable at certain time frames, folks being listened to or not being listened to at certain times. This was not that evening. It was a combination over many years that I think that built up to that evening."

The NTSB concluded three days of hearings late Friday, during which the agency's investigators questioned officials from the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Army, American Airlines regional subsidiary PSA Airlines and other parties over January's mid-air collision between an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter over Washington, D.C., that killed 67 people.

It was the nation's first major commercial airline crash since 2009.

During the hearings, the NTSB was told that the Army helicopter never heard the command from the air traffic controller to "pass behind the CRJ" as the transmission was stepped on. It was also revealed that the plane's pilots were not warned by the controller that there was a helicopter nearby or cleared to fly near the helicopter.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy also called out the FAA for not sharing a full list of who was working in the control tower the night of the crash until July 6, months after the accident.

Pilots likely didn't know how high they were flying

The NTSB's investigation found discrepancies in the altitude data shown on radio and barometric altimeters on Army helicopters after conducting test flights following January's accident.

It is likely that the helicopter crew did not know their true altitude due to notoriously faulty altimeters inside this series of Black Hawks, according to the investigation. At their closest points, helicopters and planes flew within 75 feet of each other near DCA, an astonishingly close number. During the hearings, the NTSB was told Army Black Hawks can often have wrong readings and a margin of error of +-200 feet.

"I am concerned there is a possibility that what the crew saw was very different than what the true altitude was. We did testing in May that shows concerns with the altimeters, the barometric altimeters on the 60 Lima. So we are concerned, and it's something we have to continue to investigate how significant is 100 feet in this circumstance," Homendy told reporters on Wednesday.

Army officials told the NTSB investigators that they plan to inform other military aviation officials of the altitude discrepancy by September, but NTSB board member Todd Inman criticized this for a lack of urgency.

The Army officials said they are also addressing it by mentioning it in the public testimony.

"I hope every Army aviator is not having to watch the NTSB.gov livestream to figure out if there's a discrepancy in their altitudes and planes that are flying around," Inman said.

NTSB investigators and board members noted that there seems to be a "disconnect" between the information they are getting from the FAA officials versus what the employees have shared with them during the interviews.

"What we're trying to understand is where the disconnect is because what we have is for example, reports from controllers today that are saying there were 10-15 loss of separation events since the accident," Homendy said.

Tension in the tower

Chair Homendy noted air traffic controllers crying during interviews with investigators following the crash, adding the controller whose voice is heard talking to the doomed aircraft has not returned to work. Tensions have been so high in the tower following the crash, a shouting match turned into a fist fight this spring, ending with a controller being arrested.

Some employees say they feared getting transferred or fired if concerns were brought up to their superiors.

"I hundred percent agree with you. There definitely seems to be some barrier in communication where the people that impacts it the most are not hearing the things that the FAA is moving forward on and that needs to be addressed. I agree," said Franklin McIntosh, acting chief operating officer of the Air Traffic Organization -- the operation arm of the FAA.

"I wholeheartedly agree and I will commit to you and everyone on the board in the panel that I will start working this immediately to make sure whatever those barriers are occurring, that it stops," McIntosh said. "Clearly someone in the facility doesn't feel like they're getting the help that they should be getting and quite honestly if that word's not getting down, then we need to do a better job in breaking through whatever that barrier is."

The FAA has pushed back on claims of employees being removed or transferred out of the tower as a result of the collision.

"So we didn't remove anybody as a result of an accident," said Nick Fuller, acting deputy chief operating officer with the Air Traffic Organization.

Homendy challenged that assertion saying, "I think many would disagree, since it was done pretty immediately. Also the NTSB had to weigh in several times to get people help in the tower."

NTSB investigators also pressed FAA officials over controllers who manage DCA airspace feeling pressured to "make it work" due to the large volume of aircraft in the airspace near the airport.

"We have many non-standard tools that we use in order to be able to bring a significant amount of airplanes into DCA, " said Bryan Lehman, air traffic manager at the Potomac Terminal Radar Approach Control, which manages air traffic control in the region, while also adding that they do take "pride in it," but that it gets too much after a certain point.

Lehman also testified at the hearing that controllers sent a memo to their superiors in 2023 requesting a lower arrival rate for airplanes, but the concerns were dismissed and Congress approved more flights for DCA.

Eduardo Munoz/Reuters - PHOTO: A crane retrieves part of the wreckage from the Potomac River, in the aftermath of the collision of American Eagle flight 5342 and a Black Hawk helicopter in Arlington, Virginia, Feb. 4, 2025.ADSB policy for Army

Despite calls from lawmakers and the NTSB for mandated Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADSB) -- technology that makes the aircraft more visible to the tower, other aircraft and the public -- on all aircraft, including military aircraft, it remains a point of hesitation for the Army.

All aircraft flying over 18,000 feet are required to have ADSB but certain aircraft, including military aircraft, are exempt from transmitting ADSB location when flying for security reasons.

"I'm pretty sure most people are aware of the fact that it's inherently open source," Army Lt. Col. Paul Flanigen told the hearing panel on Friday. "It has some spoofing vulnerabilities which make it non-conducive for those sensitive missions, which not just the army, but all of DOD has to operate on."

As previously reported by ABC News, the helicopter involved in the accident was not transmitting ADSB out, meaning it wasn't transmitting its location for other aircraft nearby to see where it was.

A Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) -- which detects other aircraft in close proximity -- was also not installed in the helicopter, according to the investigation.

The NTSB made a recommendation nearly two decades ago asking the FAA to require ADSB on all aircraft but it was not implemented. The point was brought up again during the hearings.

MORE: FAA administrator: 'Clearly, something was missed' that led to DC plane crash

"Does the FAA right now support requiring any newly manufactured aircraft registered in the U.S. be equipped with ADSB in?" Homendy asked.

McIntosh said yes and showed support towards requiring aircraft to be equipped with ADSB out as well.

Experts have said it's more effective when an aircraft is equipped with both ADSB in and out so they can transmit their location and also receive the location of other aircraft in its near proximity.

A bill in Congress titled the "Rotor Act" was introduced earlier this week by Sen. Ted Cruz, which would require all aircraft, including military aircraft, to transmit ADSB location when flying. Notably, the newly appointed FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy were present at the news conference and showed their support towards the legislation.

The NTSB's investigation into the cause of the accident continues and a final report is expected by January 2026.

"We do this to improve safety certainly but we all do this with each of you in mind and your loved ones that were lost tragically with you in mind not just on the CRJ but also PAT 25 so we will continue on and hope to complete this investigation within a year," Homendy said in her closing remarks on Friday.

The collapse of an amusement park ride in western Saudi Arabia has left more than 20 people injured and prompted authorities to close the park and order an investigation, state media said.

The accident occurred in the Al-Hada area of the city of Taif on Wednesday, when the "360 Big Pendulum" ride snapped in two, sending the part carrying people crashing to the ground.

Video footage posted on social media showed the pendulum swinging riders, who were strapped into their seats, in a wide arc several times before the pendulum arm snaps, sending the passenger section crashing to the ground.

The regional government said in a statement that the Taif governor, Prince Saud bin Nahar bin Saud bin Abdulaziz, had ordered an investigation and the park's closure. It said some of those injured received first aid at the amusement park, and others were taken to a hospital. It did not specify how many people were hospitalized.

State media said 23 people were injured, and that there were no fatalities.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History will once again mention President Donald Trump in an exhibit on presidential impeachments after the removal of a placard noting his two Senate trials sparked concerns this week over the White House's influence on the institution.

In a statement on Saturday, the Smithsonian detailed its decision to remove the Trump placard from the "Impeachment" section of an exhibit titled "The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden," saying the decision was not influenced by politics, but rather the conditions of the placard.

"The placard, which was meant to be a temporary addition to a 25-year-old exhibition, did not meet the museum's standards in appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation," the Smithsonian's Saturday statement read. "It was not consistent with other sections in the exhibit and moreover blocked the view of the objects inside its case. For these reasons, we removed the placard."

The "Impeachment" section of the exhibit "will be in the coming weeks to reflect all impeachment proceedings in our nation's history," the Smithsonian said.

The Washington Post was the first to report on the changes to the exhibit.

According to the Post, the Trump references were removed from the exhibit after the Smithsonian undertook a content review following pressure from the White House and accusations of partisan bias.

In its statement, the Smithsonian said it was "not asked by any Administration or other government official to remove content from the exhibit."

"The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden" exhibit was created in 2000 and hasn't been formally since 2008, a spokesperson for the Smithsonian told NBC News on Thursday. In lieu of an update, which the museum indicated would be costly, the Smithsonian in 2021 affixed a placard noting Trump's two impeachments to the exhibit.

"It was intended to be a short-term measure to address current events at the time, however, the label remained in place until July 2025," the spokesperson said Thursday.

Because the exhibit, which also covers Congress and the Supreme Court, hadn't been since 2008, the museum decided to restore the "Impeachment" section of the gallery "back to its 2008 appearance," the spokesperson said at the time.

The decision to remove the Trump label drew criticism from lawmakers, particularly as Trump has sought to exert his influence over the Smithsonian, which encompasses 21 museums, nine research centers and a zoo.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Friday accused Trump of attempting to "rewrite history."

"He is censoring the American History Museum. It's Orwellian. It's downright Orwellian. It's something you'd see in an authoritarian regime," Schumer said. "Here's my message to the president: no matter what exhibits you try to distort, the American people will never forget that you were impeached not once, but twice."

Trump has called for a reimagining of the Smithsonian, accusing the cultural institution in March of coming "under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology" and signing an executive order to "restore the Smithsonian Institution to its rightful place as a symbol of inspiration and American greatness." In that order, Trump directed Vice President JD Vance to work with the Smithsonian's Board of Regents to "remove improper ideology" from the museums.

Trump also barred spending on exhibits or programs "that degrade shared American values, divide Americans based on race or promote programs or ideologies inconsistent with Federal law and policy."

Last week, artist Amy Sherald said she withdrew her exhibit from the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery after concerns were raised about a portrait she featured of a transgender woman dressed like the Statue of Liberty.

"I was informed by the National Portrait Gallery that concerns had been raised internally about the museum's inclusion of a portrait of a trans woman titled Trans Forming Liberty. These concerns led to discussions about removing the work from the exhibition," Sherald said in a statement. "I cannot in good conscience comply with a culture of censorship, especially when it targets vulnerable communities."

A spokesperson for the Smithsonian disputed Sherald's characterization of the incident, arguing that the artist was not asked to remove the painting, but rather the museum wanted to contextualize the portrait through a video featuring differing opinions of it.

"The Smithsonian strives to foster a greater and shared understanding. By presenting and contextualizing art, the Smithsonian aims to inspire, challenge and impact audiences in meaningful and thoughtful ways. Unfortunately, we could not come to an agreement with the artist," the spokesperson said.

Authorities in Tennessee have arrested a man who threatened to kill public officials and had explosive devices in his Polk County home.

Polk County Sheriff's deputies on Friday executed an arrest warrant for 54-year-old Kevin Wade O'Neal at his house in Old Fort, an unincorporated community about an hour east of Chattanooga, for allegedly threatening to kill public officials and law enforcement personnel, according to a news release.

During the arrest, the deputies observed what appeared to be an improvised explosive device. They alerted the Chattanooga Police Department Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) for further investigation, officials said.

ATF agents, along with local authorities, searched O'Neal's residence and found 14 explosive devices, the news release said. Investigators also determined that O'Neal attempted to detonate the explosives upon the officers' arrival and while they were attempting to apprehend him.

O'Neal was charged with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder for the nine Polk County Sheriff's detectives and deputies who were present during his arrest.

O'Neal also faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder for other individuals present, and various charges for possession of prohibited weapons. He is being held at the Polk County Jail, and his bond has yet to be determined.

It wasn't immediately clear whether he had an attorney.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi exited Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa on Saturday night after suffering an apparent hamstring injury in the opening minutes.

After the match that Inter Miami won in a penalty shootout, coach Javier Mascherano indicated that Messi would undergo testing on Sunday to determine the severity of the injury.

"He felt discomfort," Mascherano said through an interpreter. "We will not be able to know until tomorrow how severe the injury is. There's probably something there. He was not in pain, but he did feel a pull."

Messi was injured around the eighth minute when he fell while being challenged by a pair of defenders near the penalty area. He fell to the ground and slammed his fist in frustration before walking toward midfield as play continued.

He walked slowly toward the Inter Miami bench before sitting down on the pitch. Trainers came out and worked on his right upper thigh area for a couple of minutes before he subbed out for Federico Redondo in the 11th and immediately walked to the locker room.

Messi has dealt with numerous hamstring injuries throughout his career and has missed time over the past couple of seasons dealing with various leg injuries — the most recent issue was with his left adductor, which sidelined him for a pair of Argentina's World Cup qualifiers earlier this year.

The injury puts his status for Inter Miami's next Leagues Cup match in jeopardy. The Herons take on Pumas UNAM on Wednesday.

Mascherano has been tasked with managing Messi's packed workload all season.

The 38-year-old star was experiencing fatigue late last month and skipped the MLS All-Star game, which led to a one-match suspension by the league for violating its rules on participation in the exhibition match.

Messi was unavailable for Inter Miami's match against Cincinnati on July 26, which allowed him a bit of rest.

"He is someone who would rather play than rest," Mascherano said on Friday, adding that Messi would tell the team if he is experiencing fatigue.

"Clearly, we talk about the situation and we manage it," he said. "But it has to be a conversation with the player. They know where they can push their body and up to which point they can't. Leo is a special case. ... Perhaps if you make him rest, he feels worse. If we see a red flag or a risk, we aim to speak to the players."

K-pop fans of all ages are flocking to the Los Angeles Convention Center this weekend for KCON, the annual three-day festival celebrating Korean music and culture.

The festival consists of all-day activities, including a vendor market of various Korean beauty and food brands, multiple stages showcasing rookie acts and meet and greet sessions. Fans then migrate over to the Crypto.com arena each evening for the M Countdown, the main concert event in which multiple K-pop artists and groups perform.

KCON, which is run by Korean media giant CJ ENM, is held in several countries, with the Los Angeles edition serving as the flagship event. The convention, presented by CJ's Korean beauty products brand Olive Young, continues through Sunday.

On Friday, fans sported white, pink and green Olive Young totes from a large pop-up space promoting the beauty retailer's upcoming U.S. storefront and some of the top brands it carries. They stopped by different booths throughout the convention hall to pick up free samples of products ranging from skincare to the popular spicy Buldak sauce, as well as coupons for a free cake slice from the bakery chain Tous Les Jours and tastings from the food brand Bibigo. Often, the samples had to be acquired through an initial step, like downloading a brand's app or spinning a raffle wheel or playing games.

The performers found themselves up against game rules as well. At the X Stage, artists like So Soo Bin sang and played challenges to help win prizes for audience members. At the Dance Stage sponsored by Jollibee, the group Newbeat competed against a Jollibee mascot to correctly match their dance moves to fast music cues.

For attendees like Prescilla Cobieye, the numerous things to do made for a distinct experience. "It's pretty different from your typical kind of concert," Cobieye, 18, said. "You could see different booths with a bunch of different sponsorships and stuff like that, and you could even see the idols walk in…you can't get that at a regular Kpop concert."

Cobieye is a fan of NCT127 and Zerobaseone, specifically, and attended a meet and greet for the latter band. The meet and greets allow fans to see their favorite artists more up close on a smaller stage within the convention center. "It was something, it was really packed," Cobieye said.

Many families also navigated KCON together like Karsen Lechner, who attended the convention with her daughter in celebration of her sweet 16. "She's pretty much been at the barricade in Artist Stage for most of the day today," Lechner said. The artists Cravity, Lee Young Ji and izna performed on that stage Friday.KCON includes a mix of established and newer acts throughout the weekend.

One buzzy subject that was much-discussed among KCON attendees: "KPop Demon Hunters," the animated movie that bowed on Netflix in June featuring numerous K-pop stars in the voice cast. The success of the film, produced by Sony Music Animation, on Netflix's global platform is seen as a sign of K-pop's enduring strength and a validation of the fandom that engrosses millions of fans who reside far outside the boundaries of South Korea.

Park Chan Uk, who is VP of live entertainment for CJ ENM, said KCON strives to curate different genres and artist types. Fans will see new idol groups but also solo artists for example. "K Con's main purpose, primary purpose, is to introduce and provide a platform for a global success for K-artists, especially the rookie artists. And I think that aim and that target will continue no matter what," he told Variety through a translator.

Of course, the M Countdown is a crucial draw for fans. Melanie Phoutthavong, a 19-year-old fan, traveled from Seattle to attend KCON with her friend. Attending that concert alone makes the whole experience worth it for Phoutthavong: "I know we saw a lot of groups in here, but that concert, it's like the big event. So I'd be happy just to be in there."

Friday night's concert included the acts like NCT127, Zerobaseone, P1Harmony, Baby DONT Cry, Lee Young Ji, NOWZ, IS:SUE and IVE. There was also recognition of Korean film and TV, through the special appearances of actors Lee Byung-hun ("Squid Game," "KPop Demon Hunters" and Park Chan Wook's upcoming "No Other Choice") and Yim Siwan ("Squid Game").

"K-pop, K-movies, K-dramas, K-beauty, K-food. We're always falling deeper in love with K-culture and at the center of it, all this, is KCON," Lee said in his remarks, which opened the concert. "For 13 years, since 2012, KCON has connected artists and fans across the globe."

Yim, who began as a K-pop singer before transitioning to acting, acknowledged his K-pop roots when he appeared later on during the show. "Maybe that's why the stage still gives me butterflies," he said. He shouted out the night's many performances, including the group izna's rendition of the song "Golden" from the Netflix film "KPop Demon Hunters" which occurred soon after Yim's speech.

NCT127, whose performances were incorporated throughout the concert, closed it with the song "Fact Check." They were joined by fans who had competed earlier to be able to dance alongside the group. For K-pop fans, the genre remains a way to be open about one's favorite artists. "I would say it's very comforting being in a community where you can just express your love for music and just your interests in general. And there's no shame here," Phoutthavong said.
