LeBron James' future with the Los Angeles Lakers beyond the 2025-26 season is uncertain. The four-time NBA MVP picked up his $52.6 million player option for the upcoming season, but notably did not negotiate a longer-team deal with the team for whom he's played seven seasons.

However, Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka said it "would be great" if James retired as a Laker. He made the remark during Saturday's news conference to announce the three-year, $165 million contract extension for Luka Dončić.

"All the interactions we've had with LeBron and his camp, Rich Paul in particular, have been very positive and supportive," Pelinka said when asked if he expected James to finish his career with the Lakers. "Very professional and Rich has been great. The dialogue with him has been open and constant.

"In terms of LeBron's career, I think the No. 1 thing we have to do there is respect he and his family's decision in terms of how long he's going to play. I think that's first and foremost. We want to respect his ability to come up with his timetable and that's really important. If he had the chance to retire as a Laker, that would be great."

James' future with the Lakers became a question after he picked up his 2025-26 option. Paul issued a statement to ESPN that appeared to put the team on notice, saying, "LeBron wants to compete for a championship" and "values a realistic chance of winning it all."

"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future," Paul said. "We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

The possibility of James leaving the Lakers as a free agent has stoked speculation a trade could be in play if the team doesn't contend for a championship this season, despite James having a no-trade clause. Insiders have circled the Dallas Mavericks as a possible destination, though previous reporting has indicated Dallas would only be interested in adding James if he were bought out from his 2025-26 contract.

Yet perhaps that stance could change midway through the season if the Mavs felt they were in the championship hunt. Such a scenario may also apply to the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and even the Cleveland Cavaliers.

What was made even clearer by the Lakers signing Dončić to an extension is that the team intends to build around him from this point forward. If that means James' chances of pursuing a fifth NBA championship — and playing a few more seasons — are better elsewhere, he might not finish his career with the Lakers. And Pelinka's remarks did nothing to dispel that notion.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell made his first start since April 2 on Saturday and gave up two home runs during a 4-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

Snell was activated off the injured list after missing the last four months with left shoulder inflammation. He had made only two starts to begin the season, allowing two earned runs and 10 hits in nine total innings. However, the left-hander only registered four strikeouts with eight walks, likely indicating something wasn't right.

On Saturday, Snell went five innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Yandy Díaz, Snell's former teammate in Tampa, took him deep twice during the Rays' win.

The Dodgers were curiously quiet at the MLB trade deadline, adding reliever Brock Stewart and outfielder Alex Call. But that may have been because the team anticipated getting pitchers like Snell back. If he's as effective as he's been during his previous nine seasons, Snell could be a more impactful addition than any trade acquisition.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced Wednesday that Snell was scheduled to start Saturday. He threw a bullpen session Thursday to get into his routine for a regular starting spot.

Snell started 108 games for Tampa Bay, compiling a 3.24 ERA and 42-30 record while averaging 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings. He was traded to the San Diego Padres before the 2021 season and pitched for the Dodgers' NL West rivals for three seasons, posting a 3.15 ERA, averaging 11.9 Ks per nine innings and winning the National League Cy Young Award in 2023.

After becoming a free agent following the 2023 season, Snell was one of the "Boras Four," clients of infamous super-agent Scott Boras who had difficulty getting lucrative long-term contracts on the open market. Ultimately, Snell settled for a two-year, $62 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. But he opted out of the deal after the first year, trying free agency again after notching 145 strikeouts in 104 innings.

Snell signed a five-year, $182 million deal with the Dodgers last November, joining what appeared to be a powerhouse rotation for one of the best teams in baseball.

Injuries have prevented that rotation — which includes Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin and Shohei Ohtani — from following through on that promise. But with nearly all of those pitchers now recovering, the Dodgers could have a formidable rotation by the end of the season and into the postseason if they remain healthy.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has "completely changed" after causing a chain-reaction crash last year on a Dallas highway that left multiple people injured, cost him more than $1 million in a settlement to victims, and resulted in a 30-day jail sentence that he will have to fulfill at some point in the future.

Rice spoke Saturday for the first time in training camp, and the first time since the 25-year-old playmaker tore a ligament in his right knee in Week 4 — an injury that wound up requiring season-ending surgery.

"I've completely changed. You have to learn from things like that," Rice said of the March 2024 accident, when prosecutors said he was driving nearly 120 mph on the North Central Expressway and made "multiple aggressive maneuvers" before striking the other vehicles.

"I've learned," Rice continued, "and taken advantage of being able to learn from something like that."

Rice pleaded guilty in July to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors said, Rice was sentenced to five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail, along with paying victims' out-of-pocket medical expenses totaling about $115,000.

He separately agreed to settle a civil case for $1,086,000, which included prejudgment interest and attorneys' fees.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs are bracing for Rice to serve an NFL suspension, though the length and time remains uncertain. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement recently that the case "remains under review."

"My legal team is handling all that," Rice said. "All I can focus on is what I can control right now and that's me doing what I do."

So far, the knee injury that robbed him of most of last season hasn't held him back.

After a standout rookie season, Rice caught 24 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns through his first three games last season. But in Week 4, after Patrick Mahomes had thrown an interception, the quarterback accidentally dived into Rice's leg as they were trying to make the tackle, tearing the lateral collateral ligament in the wide receiver's knee.

Rice had surgery and was back for summer workouts, and he's been full-go throughout training camp.

"I feel 100%. I'm excited to be back out here with the guys," Rice said. "Just kind of basically where I left off at. The only thing is get back on the field and continue to have fun doing what I do."

The Chiefs had hoped that Rice would be a focal point of the offense last season in a wide receiver corps that included Marquise Brown and then-rookie Xavier Worthy. But that triumvirate never materialized, because "Hollywood" Brown was hurt on the first play of the preseason — he didn't return until the playoffs — and Rice ultimately joined him on injured reserve.

Now, the Chiefs have all three of them healthy, Worthy has a year of experience under him, and fourth-round draft pick Jalen Royals has turned some heads in training camp. Throw in veteran Juju Smith-Schuster and Tyquan Thornton, who appears to be taking advantage of a fresh start in Kansas City, and the Chiefs are confident in their depth at the position.

Especially if Rice must serve a suspension during the upcoming season.

"I'm locked in. This is what I do," Rice said. "This is my job. This is what I love to do. So even when I'm not able to be with the team, I'm going to be working hard to get back with them as soon as possible."

After Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau sparked romance rumors, The Onion shared a faux headline about a romance between her ex, Orlando Bloom, and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel

Bloom shared his reaction to the joke on social media

Perry and Bloom officially confirmed their split in early July 2025

Orlando Bloom knows how to take a joke.

As the actor's ex Katy Perry sparks romance rumors with Justin Trudeau, satirical outlet The Onion poked fun at the singer and former Canadian prime minister by pretending to set Bloom, 48, up with another former world leader.

"Orlando Bloom Spotted At Dinner With Angela Merkel," read a headline from the satirical newspaper, which it shared in a Friday, Aug. 1 Instagram post. The headline was accompanied by what appeared to be an AI photo of the actor and former Chancellor of Germany enjoying a candlelit meal together, as well as some faux sourcing about the duo.

"Just weeks after announcing his split with fiancée Katy Perry, English actor Orlando Bloom was photographed Friday dining with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel," the newspaper's joke reporting read. "Angela kept Orlando laughing all night — he couldn't keep his eyes off her!' said an insider source who spotted the pair sipping wine, slurping oysters, and splitting a decadent piece of chocolate layer cake at a Michelin-starred restaurant."

Trudeau, 53, and Perry, 40, began sparking romance rumors after they were spotted on multiple outings in late July. On Monday, July 28, Perry and Trudeau were photographed walking a dog through Montréal's Mount Royal Park before enjoying a meal at local restaurant Le Violon. Then, on Wednesday, Trudeau was spotted in the crowd at the singer's Lifetimes Tour at Montréal's Bell Centre.

Something could be blossoming between the two, a Canadian source told PEOPLE following the Montréal sightings.

"They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes," the source told PEOPLE. "She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common."

The source added that "music is one of many things they can share," and optimism is another. "Both are idealists and still live in a world where they think they can make improvements, although it has gotten more difficult."

"Justin is a [politician] who is used to living a secret life with his personal activity, and wouldn't put on a public display at this stage," another Canadian source told PEOPLE after the pop star and former prime minister dined at Le Violon together.

"He knows they were being watched and is smart enough to play it low-key for now," the source said of Trudeau, adding that the "timing seems good for them, although a romance is in very early stages."

Trudeau split from wife Sophie Grégoire in 2023, after 18 years of marriage. They share three teenage children. Perry and Bloom confirmed the end of their engagement in early July. They share a 4-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove. (Bloom also shares son Flynn, 14, with ex-wife Miranda Kerr.)

"Due to the abundance of recent interest and conversation surrounding Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry's relationship, representatives have confirmed that Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting," reps for Bloom and Perry said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE at the time.

"They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect," the statement concluded.

Matt Rife is pivoting to the paranormal, at least when it comes to his new pad.

The stand-up comedian has bought the former house of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the ghost hunters who inspired the couple played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring franchise.

"I have officially purchased Ed and Lorraine Warren's home and Occult Museum," Rife wrote on Instagram on Friday, noting that he has become "the legal guardian, for at least the next five years, of the entire haunted collection, including THE ANNABELLE DOLL."

In a separate video on TikTok, Rife explained the significance of his decision. "This might be the most important and prominent piece of paranormal history in the world," he said. "I know a lot of you guys don't know what any of this means whatsoever, but if you follow ghost stuff, this is as big as it gets."

The comedian also clarified that while he does own the physical house, he does not own its various curios. "We are the legal guardians and caretakers of all 750 haunted artifacts and items in the Warren Museum, including the Annabelle doll," he said. "We do not legally own the items, but we are the legal guardians and caretakers of the items for at least the next five years."

Rife obtained Annabelle shortly after Dan Rivera, an investigator for the New England Society for Psychic Research, died suddenly while showcasing the infamous Raggedy Ann doll in July. The NESPR, which the Warrens founded, claims that the doll was at one point attached to "an inhuman demonic spirit."

Annabelle inspired the opening scene of The Conjuring in 2013, and eventually launched a trilogy of spinoff films: 2014's Annabelle, 2017's Annabelle: Creation, and 2019's Annabelle Comes Home, the last of which took place exclusively in the Warrens' oddity-filled family residence.

Rife said his affection for the Conjuring movies inspired his massive purchase. "If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with the paranormal and all things haunted," he wrote on Instagram. "You also may know the Conjuring films are my favorite scary movies of all time. So I'm incredibly honored to have taken over one of the most prominent properties in paranormal history."

The comedian went on to claim that the Warrens "arguably put demonology and paranormal into the mainstream" and noted that they "are the very heart of some of the most famous haunted stories of all time," including The Conjuring and The Amityville Horror.

Rife also explained that he and his friend Elton Castee, who is taking on the venture with him, intend to ensure that the Warrens' property will still host visitors. "We plan to open the house for overnight stays and museum tours, so you yourself can experience and learn all the haunted history surrounding this amazing place," he wrote.

In his TikTok, Rife acknowledged the potential supernatural risk he took by purchasing the house. "This is the most random hobby ever, but it's so f---ing cool, man," he said. "I should probably collect stamps or something — might be a little safer."

The fictional version of the Warrens will return to the big screen in The Conjuring: Last Rites, which Farmiga recently told Entertainment Weekly will be her final outing in the series. "It is the end of the road. It's got to be the end of the road," she said. "I would literally explode on camera. What Last Rites demanded of us physically, emotionally, mentally, stamina-wise... It's been a long haul, man. It's been a really, really long haul, but it's time."

The Conjuring: Last Rites hits theaters Sept. 5.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Forward Alex Laferriere has agreed to a three-year, $12.3 million deal to stay with the Los Angeles Kings.

The Kings announced the deal Saturday for Laferriere, who was a restricted free agent this summer after playing out his entry-level contract.

The 23-year-old Laferriere had 19 goals and 23 assists last year for the Kings, emerging as a dependable scorer in only his second NHL season. He largely played on the right wing alongside center Quinton Byfield, another key member of Los Angeles' young core, and high-scoring Kevin Fiala.

A third-round pick in the 2020 draft, Laferriere has 31 goals and 34 assists in 158 games for the Kings.

New Los Angeles general manager Ken Holland has taken care of his most pressing summer contract issues after the signing of Laferriere, but Holland said last month that he would be eager to sign Adrian Kempe to a long-term deal as the Swedish forward heads into the final season of his current contract.
