Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) thinks he has New York City under his thumb on *Daredevil: Born Again*, but the Kingpin is about to meet his political match in Matthew Lillard's new character.
* *has learned that the *Scream* legend will play political power player Mr. Charles in season 2, who will be working in direct opposition to the corrupt Mayor Fisk.
Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum revealed the character details in an exclusive interview with EW at New York Comic Con on Thursday, after Lillard's casting was first announced in February of this year in an undisclosed role.

"The story is about power," Winderbaum says. "When Wilson Fisk takes over New York, not just as a mayor but as a king in a way, it puts him in a new class of power players on the international stage. Matthew Lillard's character represents that."
The exec describes Mr. Charles as "a bit of a new antagonist on the field."
"But he's as influential, in many ways, as Fisk is," Winderbaum adds. "That power negotiation at a very high level of politics and international diplomacy is also fun to watch. [Fisk] is dealing with Mr. Charles up here and Daredevil [Charlie Cox] down here for different reasons. So he's getting squeezed a little bit."
*Daredevil: Born Again* debuted in March of this year on Disney+, reviving characters and story from Netflix's original *Daredevil*, which starred Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil for three seasons from 2015-2018. The first season of *Daredevil: Born Again *picked up years later, with Cox's titular blind lawyer vigilante battling D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, who became mayor of New York and used his power for — what else? — evil.

The brutal season 1 finale saw Fisk take over the city's government, lock away anyone he deemed a threat to his power in a secret prison, installed his own force of corrupt cops acting under his control, outlawed vigilantism, and declared martial law. Matt teamed up with Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), who ultimately got caught but, of course, escaped his prison — setting up Bernthal's standalone Punisher TV special for Disney+ as well as season 2, which finished filming this summer.
*Daredevil: Born Again* has already been renewed for a third season.**
Dario Scardapane, who worked on Netflix's *The Punisher* show with Bernthal and now serves as the showrunner of *Born Again*, previously teased to EW that the eight-episode season 2 is "really kind of part 2 of season 1, so it allows us to go into bigger and different places." He also prefaced that season 1 serial killer Muse (the casting for which is under wraps at the moment) will cause "a ripple effect that extends beyond" the first batch of episodes.

Beyond that, the world of the Defenders of Hell's Kitchen continues to grow as Krysten Ritter will reprise her role as Jessica Jones in season 2. Her super-powered private detective first appeared on Netflix's *Jessica Jones* — the streamer's second Marvel series after the original *Daredevil* — in 2015. The series ran for three seasons before finishing in 2019. She then reprised her role on Netflix's 2017 Marvel crossover show *The Defenders*, where she joined forces with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.
Meanwhile, Lillard will also be seen in his return to the *Scream* franchise for the highly anticipated seventh movie, as well as the *Five Nights at Freddy's* sequel.
