Richard Gadd spoke about a mysterious, unseen eighth episode of Baby Reindeer while at Future Vision 2025 in Melbourne, Australia, on July 14

He revealed that he pushed network executives not to include the episode, which would have provided audiences with some "light relief" from the stalking storyline

"I felt you miss her every time she's not on screen, and I felt in a lot of ways, the sooner you get back to her, the better," Gadd said of the tension created by Martha Scott's character, per The Sydney Morning Herald

Baby Reindeer is one episode shorter than it should have been, according to the Netflix series' creator Richard Gadd.

During an appearance at Future Vision 2025 in Melbourne, Australia, on Monday, July 14, Gadd, 36, revealed to attendees that he was behind the removal of an eighth episode in which his character Donny Dunn visited family in Scotland, The Sydney Morning Herald and Variety reported.

He explained that the episode was created after network executives suggested that audiences needed some "light relief" from stalker Martha Scott (Jessica Gunning) relentlessly pursuing Donny.

"I remember when we were developing it, there was the note [from Netflix] that kept coming in – and probably rightfully so – that the show was just too dark, you need to give the audience a respite from it all," Gadd told interviewer Tony Ayres, according to the outlets.

"And so there was an episode where I escape London to get away from Martha and everything, and I go and visit my parents [in Scotland]," Gadd continued, as noted by The Herald. "There's a whole episode where I go to the football with my dad [played by Mark Lewis Jones], I spend a day with my dad, and stuff kind of happens."

While Donny's break from former lawyer Martha — whom he met while working in a London bar — seemed like a reasonable inclusion in the series, Gadd said he "fought hard" to have the scenes removed after watching the edit.

"I felt you miss her every time she's not on screen, and I felt in a lot of ways, the sooner you get back to her, the better," Gadd said of his decision to eliminate the episode and keep tensions high, per The Herald.

He explained that a scene from the missing episode, which showed Martha infiltrating Donny's kitchen, was repurposed for a revised version of episode three, according to Variety.

Baby Reindeer is an Emmy, Golden Globes, and BAFTA-winning series loosely inspired by Gadd's real-life experiences. Before Netflix brought the story to life, Gadd recounted the grooming, harassment, and sexual assault he was allegedly a victim of in a one-man show.

Legal complications have arisen since his version of events became a hit TV show.

Scottish lawyer Fiona Harvey, who Martha was allegedly based on, filed a $170 million lawsuit against Netflix in June 2024, accusing the network of defamation and inaccuracy.

"The Complaint is self-explanatory," Harvey's attorneys said in a statement shared with PEOPLE at the time. "Netflix destroyed a woman, claiming, among many allegations, that she was a convicted woman. It never contacted her. It never checked the facts. It never made any effort to understand the truth of its 'true story!' "

"We intend to defend this matter vigorously and to stand by Richard Gadd's right to tell his story," a Netflix spokesperson told PEOPLE.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Gadd is unable to speak about the case for legal reasons despite not being named as a defendant.
