Stranger Things season 5 premieres on Nov. 26, 2025

The Netflix show, which first debuted in 2016, combines elements of horror, mystery and science fiction

Shows like Sense 8 and The Umbrella Academy similarly follow characters with otherworldly powers

Stranger Things is finally coming to a close.

Since 2016, the Netflix series has dominated pop culture, becoming the streamer's third-most popular series of all time (per Tudum) and launching the careers of Millie Bobby Brown, Sadie Sink and more.

The series follows a group of kids from a small Indiana town who get caught up in a massive battle between Eleven (Brown), a young girl with superpowers, and the secret government agency that created her. On top of that, the group must also deal with the vicious, monster-filled parallel world that Eleven accidentally opened up.

Fans of the series will get a fifth — and final — season of the show, where stars like Winona Ryder and David Harbour will return to give Stranger Things a proper send-off. The first batch of episodes debut on Nov. 25, 2025, the next three premiere on Dec. 25 and the final episode releases on Dec. 31.

Until then, fans can check out tons of other great shows that have the same vibes as Stranger Things.

From superhero hits like The Umbrella Academy to shows about a group of kids taking on monsters like Goosebumps, here are 15 shows similar to Stranger Things.

The Umbrella Academy

Just as Eleven was given superpowers, The Umbrella Academy follows a group who were born with special abilities, all thanks to a substance known as Marigold.

The group — who are adopted and become a family — are sometimes even referred to by their number. Sound familiar? Anyone who loves Stranger Things' superpowered mayhem will love the comedic spin that The Umbrella Academy presents.

Goosebumps

Stranger Things follows a group of friends who battle otherworldly monsters and discover a massive cover-up. Replace the word "otherworldly" with "supernatural," and that description is pretty close to what viewers get in Disney+'s 2023 Goosebumps.

Aimed at an older audience than the original kids show, the new series has an action-packed story that brings many of the classic books to life. The show also has some acting veterans joining the young cast, like Justin Long, Rachael Harris and Rob Huebel.

For fans who love The Upside Down in Stranger Things, check out Alice in Borderland. In the series, a group finds themselves mysteriously transported to another realm that functions like a video game. The problem? Dying in the game actually kills you. It's a great series for Stranger Things fans who are looking to turn up the intensity a bit.

In this series, a mysterious hole opens up on a rural ranch in Wyoming, bringing with it a series of bizarre events.

However, despite the extraterrestrial happenings, the show remains heavily focused on land squabbles and personal conflicts. For anyone who loves the soapy drama of Yellowstone but wants a bit of Stranger Things science fiction thrown in, Outer Range is a sure bet.

Created by the producers of Stranger Things, Netflix's I Am Not Okay With This is Stranger Things meets The Secret Life of an American Teenager.

In the show, a teenage girl (Sophia Lillis) grows up in a small town and deals with all the normal problems of a high schooler, like relationships, friendships and feeling like an outcast. Along the way, she also develops superpowers.

In Silverpoint, a group of campers discover a portal to another realm that brings in madness, like robots and dinosaurs. It also attracts the attention of a government agency that needs to keep the situation secret.

However, Silverpoint is a kids show, so some of the language and thrills from Stranger Things aren't included, making it great for younger viewers.

Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons.

Many Stranger Things fans know that the series was heavily inspired by the Duffer Brothers' love of Dungeons & Dragons. In a May 2022 interview with Netflix's Tudum, the creative duo even said, "In some ways, we and our writers are the Dungeon Masters of Stranger Things."

To really see what the Duffers are talking about, fans should check out the original Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. It aired from 1983 to 1985, which means the show was on TV during the period that Stranger Things is set in.

For a more modern take on Dungeons & Dragons, check out The Legend of Vox Machina. Based on the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role, the animated series follows a ragtag group as they venture through the world of Exandria, taking on quests and fighting bad guys.

Even dedicated Dungeons fans will be impressed by this animated series, which closely follows the campaign.

Before creating Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers wrote for the mystery series Wayward Pines. Based on the book series of the same name, the show takes place in an idyllic Idahoan town.

But soon, little clues begin to reveal that this utopia might actually be more of a dystopia. For Stranger Things fans, Wayward Pines shows how, exactly, the Duffers learned to hook viewers.

So Weird

Patrick Levis, Cara DeLizia and Eric Lively in So Weird.

For anyone who loves the "stranger" part of Stranger Things, Disney's So Weird just as fun. Like Stranger Things used Dungeons & Dragons to inspire its world, So Weird relies on mythology, the supernatural and cryptozoology.

In each episode, a young girl traveling with her musician mother encounters mysterious entities, including sirens, banshees, werewolves and more.

Yellowjackets

Jane Widdop as Laura Lee, Alexa Barajas Plante as Mari, Mya Lowe as Yellowjacket #1, Courtney Eaton as Lottie, Sophie Thatcher as Natalie, Princess Davis as Yellowjackets #2 and Sophie Nélisse as Shauna in YELLOWJACKETS.

While there's technically no Upside Down in Yellowjackets, the forest setting comes close. The hit Showtime series follows two timelines — one where a girls' soccer team is stranded in the wilderness in the 1990s, and another set a few decades later, when the girls (who are now adults) are forced to live with the trauma of their experience.

But in the forest, something otherworldly seems to be lurking — or is it just the girls' delusion? Yellowjackets does a fantastic job of keeping audiences guessing.

Like Stranger Things, the ninth season of American Horror Story also went back to the 1980s with 1984. Largely inspired by Friday the 13th, the season centers around camp counselors at a recently reopened summer camp. Horror fans can probably guess what happens next.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is great for anyone who loves the spooky side of Stranger Things. In each episode, a group known as The Midnight Society tells a scary story — and viewers never quite know what they're in for. For the scariest entries, check out "The Tale of the Dead Man's Float" and "The Tale of Laughing in the Dark."

Sense 8

Netflix

Sense8 Finale.

One of the coolest parts about Eleven's powers is her ability to go inside the minds of others. But what if an entire group found themselves connected by telepathy? That's what happens in Sense 8. The hit series spans the globe, crisscrossing cities like Chicago, Berlin, Seoul and Mexico City to explore how a seemingly random group becomes suddenly intertwined.

Beyond Stranger Things.

To go even deeper into Stranger Things, check out the companion series Beyond Stranger Things. The show combines behind-the-scenes footage with interviews and roundtable discussions from the cast and crew to explore how the series comes to life. It's not quite a reality show and it's not quite a documentary, instead blending elements of both.
