Senegal PM says party could quit government if president diverges from vision

Senegal PM says party could quit government if president diverges from vision

By Portia Crowe and Ngouda Dione

Reuters

DAKAR, March 2 (Reuters) - Senegal's Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said he was willing to take his party out of the government ‌and return to opposition if President Bassirou Diomaye Faye breaks from its vision ‌amid rumours of a power struggle between the two party colleagues.

Tensions have been high in the West African country following violence at universities and long drawn-out talks with the International Monetary Fund as Senegal battles to raise cash and negotiate a new lending programme with the IMF.

The Fund froze a $1.8 billion programme in 2024 after Sonko's government uncovered misreported debts by the previous administration that ‌have been estimated at more than $11 billion.

Asked by a supporter about the relationship between the two men, Sonko said in a live broadcast on Sunday that the "debate" would be moot "if the president is aligned with his party".

"If the president is not aligned with his party, even though we all govern together, we're in what I call a 'soft power-sharing' situation," he said. "We would manage our differences accordingly, and we would also seek common ground to move forward ‌together."

But if there is a clearer break, he said, they would either have a "more difficult cohabitation" or the Pastef party, which Sonko leads and which holds a majority in parliament, would revert to being an opposition party.

"Pastef has no problem with either of these options," he said.

Sonko was a popular opponent under the previous administration. He was barred from running ‌in the 2024 presidential election due to a legal conviction and chose little-known Faye, a longtime aide and Pastef member, as his replacement candidate.

Faye then appointed Sonko as prime minister.

Since then, signs of dissension have begun ‌to appear between the two men. In November, their camps issued conflicting statements over the leadership of the ruling coalition.

That followed an announcement by Sonko that the IMF had proposed a debt restructuring, which he said Senegal would not accept. The comments sent ‌the country's international bonds sharply lower at the time.

Any suggestion of discord raises the possibility of further delays in negotiations with the IMF.

US on high alert for homeland attacks by Iran. What to know.

US on high alert for homeland attacks by Iran. What to know.

WASHINGTON – Federal counterterrorism agencies are on high alert for a potential retaliatory attack on U.S. soil afterU.S. and Israeli forceslaunched strikes on Iran thatkilled the nation'ssupreme leader,Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other top officials.

USA TODAY

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have both announced they are on war footing, as theyhave been in the pastover whether U.S. strikes, ordered by PresidentDonald Trump, on Iranian targets would prompt the Tehran regime and its proxy forces to seek revenge.

And while officials from both agencies declined comment to USA TODAY on March 1 about their heightened operations, veteran Iran watchers said there is good reason for them to be worried.

"Iran has developed this capability to carry out attacks abroad over many years," including in the United States, former FBI and Treasury Department counterterrorism official Matthew Levitt said. "If there was ever a time the regime would want to act on it, it would be now."

Already, Iran has responded with awave of retaliatory strikesacross the Middle East, including targeting countries hosting U.S. military bases like Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. IranianPresident Masoud Pezeshkianvowed March 1 that "bloodshed and revenge" is Iran's "legitimate right and duty."

ThreeAmerican service membershave been killed and five others have been seriously injured in the ongoing conflict.

The Iranian regime has a long history –dating back at least 46 years– of assassinations and other terrorist plots on U.S. soil and against Americans overseas.

Those include plots disrupted by the U.S. against Iranian dissidents, andagainst Trumpand his former National SecurityAdviser, John Bolton, in response to a 2020 military strike that killed Iranian military leaderGen. Qassem Soleimani.

The United States wenton high alertlast June 22 overconcerns of retaliationfrom Tehran after the bombingof three Iranian nuclear sitesa day earlier.

Major U.S. cities from New York to Los Angelesstepped up their security, and the U.S. government issued warnings to U.S. citizens at home and abroad.

More:US sanctions Iranian officials for plot to kill John Bolton, other Trump officials

Washington's intervention in the so-called "12-day war" last year between Iran and Israel prompted the FBI and Department of Homeland Security toissue terrorism advisory warningsof potential Iranian attacks in the U.S.

And it spurred the FBI to pull many agents from one of Trump's top priorities, immigration and mass deportation efforts, back to counterterrorism in anticipation of potential attacks, Levitt wrote in an article for theU.S. Army's Combating Terrorism Centerin August.

At the time, federal officials advised their state and local government counterparts to be especially vigilant for potential domestic plots in the United States. One DHSNational Terrorism Advisory System bulletinwarned that the "Iran conflict is causing a heightened threat environment in the United States."

The bulletin warned that terror plots weren't the only concern.

Cyberattacks against U.S. networks "by pro-Iranian hacktivists are likely," with other attacks possible by the Iranian government, the bulletin said.

Citing Iran's "long-standing commitment to target U.S. Government officials," the bulletin said "the likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland."

What are the FBI and DHS doing now?

On Feb. 28, FBI DirectorKash Patelsaid the bureau is "fully engaged on the situation overseas,"  and that he has instructed the FBI's Counterterrorism and intelligence teams, including its 200-plusJoint Terrorism Task Forcesacross the country, to be on high alert and to "mobilize all assisting security assets needed."

"Our JTTFs throughout the country are working 24/7, as always, to address and disrupt any potential threats to the homeland," Patel saidin an X post. "While the military handles force protection overseas, the@FBIremains at the forefront of deterring attacks here at home - and will continue to have our team work around the clock to protect Americans."

Patel called on "everyone to please report anything that may seem suspicious to law enforcement" via the FBI's  1-800-CALL-FBI tip line andtips.fbi.govwebsite.

Homeland Security SecretaryKristi Noemsaid the Department of Homeland Security is on similar heightened alert for potential U.S.-based attacks.

"I am in direct coordination with our federal intelligence and law enforcement partners as we continue to closely monitor and thwart any potential threats to the homeland," Noemsaid in an X post.

Officials from both agencies told USA TODAY they could not comment beyond what Patel and Noem announced.

Decades of plots, assassinations and attacks

In 1980, Iranian operative David Theodore Belfield, who had changed his name to Daoud Salahuddin, allegedly assassinated a former aideto the recently deposed Shah of Iranin the Washington, D.C. suburbof Bethesda.

Ali Akbar Tabatabai, 49, the Shah's aide, had organized the Iran Freedom Foundation, a vocal group opposed to the new religious government led by the then-supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Dozens of other plots over the years followed, both in the U.S. and against American targets oversea, according to congressional investigators.

U.S. prosecutors say those efforts ramped up significantly in the years following the Trump-ordered assassination of Soleimani, a major general in Iran's feared Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and commander of the IRGC international attack unit known as the Quds Force.

Since Soleimani's death in 2020, Iranian operatives have plottedattacks on Trump,Bolton, other U.S. officials and prominent Iranian dissidents, either alone or in concert with the IRGC's many proxy organizations including the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.

In all, U.S. authorities have disrupted at least 17 Iranian plots in the homeland since Soleimani's death, Levitt wrote in his West Point article.

A murder-for-hire plot against Trump

In November 2024, federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York charged three men in amurder-for-hire plotagainst a U.S. citizen of Iranian origin. One of them,Iran-based operative Farhad Shakeri, was also charged with being directed by Iran and the IRGC with "surveilling and plotting to assassinate" Trump in revenge for Soleimani's assassination, according to a Justice Department criminal complaint.

Also indicted wereCarlisle "Pop" Rivera, 49, and Jonathon Loadholt, 36, both of New York.

Another man withties to Iran, Asif Merchant, is currently on trial in New York, and accused of taking part in a 2024 terrorism attempt and plot to kill Trump.

Bolton, the former top Trump aide who has been one of Iran's top U.S. targets, said March 1 he could not comment on whether he is receiving special protection from the FBI or Secret Service as he has in the past.

"I just probably shouldn't get into anything about that," Bolton told USA TODAY. "I just have no comment on all that sort of thing."

Bolton said he was given numerous "duty to warn" intelligence alerts by the FBI in recent years following confirmed Iranian threats to his life because of his role in the Soleimani assassination.

Those were deemed so serious that the FBI asked the Biden administration for special Secret Service protection for Bolton beginning at Thanksgiving 2021. It lasted until Trump ordered it cancelled on his first day back in office in January 2025 because of a falling out between the two after publication of Bolton's tell-all memoir of his time in Trump's first administration.

But, Bolton said, "The whole counterterrorism apparatus ought to be on high alert at this point in the U.S., and in contact with our friends and allies around the world, because there's no doubt that Iran will – the regime will – try and use every mechanism they've got to retaliate for what's happening."

Rev. Jesse Jackson returns home to South Carolina to lie in state

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — After a long career of fighting for civil rights, the Rev.Jesse Jackson Sr.is visiting his home for one last time tolie in stateat the South Carolina capitol on Monday.

Obit Jesse Jackson

The final full honors from the state where he was born is a far cry from his childhood in segregated Greenville, where in 1960 he couldn't go inside the local library's much better funded whites-only branch to check out a book he needed.

Jackson led seven Black high school students into that segregated branch, where they sat down and read books and magazines until they were arrested. The branches closed, then quietly reopened for all.

With that action, Jackson launched his career — and crusade — fighting for equality for all. He would catch theattention of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.and join the voting rights march King led from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

Jacksondied Feb. 17at age 84 after battling arare neurological disorderthat affected his mobility and ability to speak in his later years.

The South Carolina services are part oftwo weeks of events. It began with Jackson's bodylying in reposeand the public invited last week to his Rainbow PUSH Coalition's Chicago headquarters.

After South Carolina, Jackson will be returned to Chicago for a large celebration of life gathering at a megachurch and the final homegoing services at the headquarters of Rainbow PUSH. Plans for a service in Washington, D.C., to honor him have been postponed until a later date.

Nationally, Jackson advocated for the poor and underrepresented for voting rights, job opportunities, education and health care. He scored diplomatic victories with world leaders.

Trough his Rainbow PUSH Coalition, he channeled cries for Black pride and self-determination into corporate boardrooms, pressuring executives to make America a more open and equitable society. He stepped forward as the Civil Rights Movement's torchbearer after King's assassination, and would run for theDemocratic presidential nominationin 1984 and 1988.

Jackson continued to be active in his home state, pushing in 2003 for Greenville County to honor King by matching the federal holiday in his honor and in 2015 by advocating for removing the Confederate flag from South Carolina Statehouse grounds after nine Black worshipers were killed in a racist shooting at a Charleston church.

Jackson is just the second Black man to lie in state at the South Carolina capitol. State Sen. Clementa Pinckneywas honoredin 2015 after he was shot and killed in the Charleston church shooting.

NEED TO KNOW

  • Episode 1 introduced a slew of characters new to the Taylor Sheridan universe

  • The cast includes Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel and Tatanka Means

Taylor Sheridanhas assembled a wave of new stars to saddle up for theYellowstonespinoff,Marshals.

The Paramount+ series, which premiered on March 1, follows an elite team of U.S. Marshals in Montana led by Pete "Cal" Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) as they hunt down fugitives and battle rising threats across Big Sky Country.

Cal's team is comprised of three members — Andrea Santos (Ash Santos), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) and Tatanka Means (Miles Kittle) — before he convinces Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) to join their ranks.

During an interview with PEOPLE in November 2025, Kebbel had nothing but praise for Grimes, even dubbing him a "badass" on set.

"It's so cool to work alongside him, but also see him in action, because it really is a totally different side to his character," she added. "I know you got pieces of it inYellowstone, but because this is picking up where that started so long ago, it's exciting. I think people are gonna like it."

Here's everything to know about the characters inMarshalsseason 1.

Spoilers ahead forMarshalsseason 1!

Logan Marshall-Green as Pete "Cal" Calvin

Marshall-Green stars as Cal, Kayce's former Navy SEAL teammate and now the team leader of Montana's U.S. Marshals unit.

But life after the Navy was far from easy. Cal's post-military years were anything but "smooth," marked by "crushing pills and throwing hands" — a destructive spiral that may have cost him his marriage, with his wife leaving and taking their daughter with her.

His move to Montana brings him face-to-face with Kayce for the first time in years, instantly reigniting the hard-earned, battle-tested brotherhood they once shared.

Ash Santos as Andrea Santos

Santos plays a character with the same last name — Santos — a sharp U.S. Marshal who finds herself far outside her comfort zone in Montana, viewing the posting as little more than a temporary "detour" on her path to bigger ambitions.

She's never ridden a horse, can't stand country music and has little patience for the state's rugged traditions — putting her instantly at odds with the local culture. She even needs a crash course on the Dutton dynasty, much to her teammates' disbelief.

Santos joined the Marshals to "avenge" her father, a police officer killed in the line of duty.

Arielle Kebbel as Belle Skinner

Kebbel portrays Skinner, a former undercover specialist with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who's just two months into her tenure with the U.S. Marshals.

Though she's new to the unit, it doesn't take long for Kayce to clock her horse riding skills. He soon pieces together that she comes from a well-known family of cutting horse breeders.

When he connects the dots, Skinner quietly asks him to keep it to himself, signaling that her past — and her family name — is something she'd rather not be made public.

Tatanka Means as Miles Kittle

Means stars as Kittle, a member of the U.S. Marshals team who also hails from Broken Rock Reservation.

Kittle was discharged from the Marine Corps before ever being deployed, making this assignment his first real taste of high-stakes action.

Brett Cullen plays Harry Gifford, the head of Montana's U.S. Marshals division and a member of the sitting president's cabinet.

10 songs you didn’t know were written by the Beatles

10 songs you didn't know were written by the Beatles

The Beatles penned hit after hit, all of which demonstrated their mastery of the songwriting form. But while they racked up classic songs for themselves beyond counting, they still found the time to write songs for other musicians.

MediaFeed

Songs you didn't know were written by the Beatles

Not everyone was aware that the song they were hearing on the radio had been written by John, Paul, George, or Ringo, especially if the song had been credited to a pseudonym. Here are some examples of songs that were recorded by other artists but dreamed up by the world's favorite Liverpudlians.

1. "I Wanna Be Your Man" by The Rolling Stones – 1963

Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, this song became one of The Rolling Stones' early hits. In fact, it was such a good tune that Lennon and McCartney borrowed it back so they could record their own version of it on their 1963 sophomore album, "With the Beatles."

2. "Come and Get It" by Badfinger – 1969

Written and produced by Paul McCartney, this song became a top 10 hit for Badfinger, a band signed to the Beatles' Apple label. The band had several big hits of their own, so they didn't necessarily need Macca to write material for them. But hey, when you're signed to the Fab Four's label, it doesn't hurt to ask if they have potential hits lying around that they're not using.

3. "Bad to Me" by Billy J. Kramer With the Dakotas –1963

"Bad to Me" was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for British pop singer Billy J. Kramer. His recording of the song topped the U.K. charts. It was covered by other artists, most notably Graham Parker, but the Beatles themselves never took a crack at it. The only known Beatle-adjacent recording of "Bad to Me" emerged in 2013 on iTunes in the form of a John Lennon demo that was part of the compilation, "The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963."

4. "Love of the Loved" by Cilla Black –1963

"Love of the Loved" is a song credited to John Lennon and Paul McCartney and was recorded as part of their unsuccessful audition sessions for Decca Records. While that recording was never officially released by the Beatles, pop singer Cilla Black recorded the song and got a top 40 U.K. chart hit out of it.

5. "Step Inside Love" by Cilla Black –1968

Five years after "Love of the Loved," Cilla Black's career had progressed to the point where she had her own musical television show, simply called "Cilla." For its theme, another Lennon-McCartney composition was used, "Step Inside Love." The Beatles recorded the song during sessions for their 1968 self-titled album, but it didn't see an official release until its inclusion on the "Anthology 3" compilation in 1996.

6. "A World Without Love" by Peter and Gordon –1964

"A World Without Love" was a U.K. chart-topper for the pop duo Peter and Gordon. Despite being credited to "Lennon-McCartney," it was written solely by a teenaged Paul McCartney. While it was a hit for Peter and Gordon, the Beatles never recorded it themselves as its author didn't think it was good enough for the band.

7. "Woman" by Peter and Gordon –1966

Perhaps because he and the pop duo Peter and Gordon had been successful with "A World Without Love," Paul McCartney wrote "Woman" under the pseudonym "Bernard Webb." He wanted to know if the song could still become a hit on its own merits rather than on the famous "Lennon-McCartney" songwriting credit. The ruse collapsed pretty quickly, and the song eventually peaked at number 14 on Billboard Hot 100.

8. "Goodbye" by Mary Hopkin –1969

Folk singer Mary Hopkin recorded this Lennon-McCartney song in 1969 and it quickly skyrocketed up the charts. Sadly, it could never get past the number two spot on the U.K. singles chart, as there was a song firmly lodged there. The song was another Lennon-McCartney single, "Get Back."

9. "Sour Milk Sea" by Jackie Lomax –1968

Written by George Harrison, this song was taped by singer Jackie Lomax, who recorded for the Beatles' Apple label. Harrison plays guitar on it, and both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr appear on it as well. Even with all of that going for "Sour Milk Sea", it failed to meet sales expectations and is considered a disappointment. That's a shame, because the song itself is a banger that deserved to be a hit.

10. "Badge" by Cream –1969

Featuring Eric Clapton on guitar, Cream was a massively successful British supergroup whose members had all the talent in the world. However, the band couldn't stand each other personally, leading them to break up after two extremely tumultuous years. George Harrison co-wrote "Badge" with Clapton and it appeared on their aptly named final album, "Goodbye."

Man killed by state trooper after fatally stabbing a woman and a dog in road rage incident near DC

Man killed by state trooper after fatally stabbing a woman and a dog in road rage incident near DC

A man stabbed four people, one fatally, before he was shot and killed by a Virginia trooper on a busy interstate near Washington, DC, authorities said.

CNN Police rerouted traffic on the I-495 Beltway in Fairfax County, Virginia. as they investigated a stabbing incident. - WJLA

The incident Sunday afternoon on the Interstate 495 Beltway was described as road rage and is not believed to be terrorism-related, officials said.

According to Virginia State Police, a trooper was called to the scene in Fairfax County around 1:17 p.m. for a reported road rage incident following a car crash.

"When the trooper arrived on scene, he was confronted by a male suspect carrying a knife," police said in a statement. "The trooper then shot the suspect in self-defense."

The suspect was transported to hospital and later succumbed to those injuries, the statement said.

The victim who died was a 39-year-old woman, according to police. A dog was also stabbed to death.

The condition of the other victims is unknown.

A preliminary investigation indicates the stabbings occurred following a crash on I-495 southbound, police said, adding the crash is under investigation.

Several lanes of the interstate were closed for hours as authorities investigated, slowing traffic to a standstill.

One witness told CNN he was driving with his wife when traffic slowed significantly and he saw two cars "kind of banged up." He then spotted two people covered in blood and a man with a knife.

A woman appeared to be trying to stop the assailant, but the man kept swinging his knife, the witness said.

"I just kept driving with the traffic," he said. "It was really, it was really scary."

A second witness also described seeing a woman covered in blood trying to defend herself from a man.

Another witness, on his way home from a weekend with family, told CNN he saw a scuffle he now believes was a stabbing. He then saw a state trooper pull up and fire at least two to three shots at the man.
