She then went on to note how the design process first started in 2020, and that alone took "a year to complete." After waiting "a while" for approvals from the Homeowners Association (HOA), they were able to finally break ground at the site in February 2022.

After almost three years of construction, the home was finally finished on Tuesday, Nov. 11, she shared.

The Gist

  • John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy had a high-profile relationship throughout the '90s.

  • Their romance is the focus of Season 1 of Ryan Murphy's 2026 series Love Story.

  • JFK Jr. and Bessette Kennedy, as well as her sister Lauren Bessette, died in a plane crash on July 16, 1999.

Few couples captured the public imagination like John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Before the 1999 plane crash that ended their lives, they were the glamorous American counterpart to Britain's royal family. What they wore, where they went, how they celebrated their ultra-private nuptials—every detail of their romance became fodder for an invested public. After the crash, which also claimed the life of Bessette's sister, Lauren, the spouses were immortalized as doomed lovers and victims of the so-calledKennedycurse.

The first season of Ryan Murphy's newanthology series,Love Story, puts their relationship in the spotlight once more. Paul Anthony Kelly plays the dashing attorney born into America's foremost political dynasty, while Tony nominee Sarah Pidgeon brings stylish publicist Bessette Kennedy to the screen.

"John and Carolyn were incredibly unique," Bessette's friend, RoseMarie Terenzio, toldPeoplein 2017. "They were a warm and loving couple who handled their fame with humility and grace."

Love Storyis the latest in a series of books, documentaries, and essays retreading the lives of one of the 20th century's most beloved golden couples. Here's everything to know about JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's relationship.

They met at the VIP section of Calvin Klein.

It's not every day a fashion designer plays matchmaker—in fact, romance wasn't onCalvin Klein'smind when he and his wife, Kelly Klein, tapped Bessette to show JFK Jr. a selection of clothing on a spring day in 1991 or 1992 (accounts vary). Bessette was chosen because she was "the most effervescent person on the sales floor" and regularly handled the NYC store's VIP clientele, according to Elizabeth Beller's 2024 bookOnce Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy(excerpted inPeople).

The attorney and publisher found himself leaving with more than new clothes, however. "He came out of the meeting smitten, with a few suits and Carolyn's number," Beller wrote. The wheels of their love story were set in motion.

Their first date had a romcom-worthy miscommunication.

Manyrom-comsemploy miscommunication as a plot device to keep the two leads apart a little longer. The trope went from fiction to fact when Bessette and JFK Jr. had their first date at a gala dinner in early 1992. Calvin Klein's assistant, MJ Bettenhausen, told Beller in her book that when Bessette arrived at the gala, "Sitting next to him [JFK Jr.] was another woman that Carolyn either mistook as his date, or actually was his date." As a result, the publicist reportedly turned down his invite to an after-party. By May 1992, however, the pair had reconciled, as they were seen in "deep conversation" at a fundraiser.

He proposed in July 1995 with an engagement ring inspired by his mother Jackie.

Once they hit it off in 1992, the couple dated on and off for the next three years. Beller toldPeopleone of the sources of tension in their relationship was JFK Jr.'s reluctance to introduce his girlfriend to his mother, former first lady Jackie Kennedy.

"The on, off-ness of their relationship between '92 and '94, partially, was ... because [Carolyn] would break up with him over the fact that he wasn't introducing her to Jackie. [She was] thinking, 'This can't be serious if he's not really introducing me to his mother.'"If Carolyn met Jackie, I think [JFK Jr.] knew that that would sort of become a life of its own," the author continued. "Maybe he wasn't quite ready for that."

Nevertheless, Jackie had a connection to one of the most significant moments in their relationship: their engagement. JFK Jr. took inspiration forBessette's engagement ringfrom a ring belonging to his late mother, who died of cancer in May 1994. Per Beller's book, he proposed to Bessette over the Fourth of July weekend in 1995, when the couple were on a fishing trip in Martha's Vineyard. She told him she'd think about it.

"She [Carolyn] held the proposal off for about three weeks, which I think just made him all the more intent on marrying her," a friend of JFK Jr.'s toldPeoplein 2017.

Although their relationship attracted constant attention from the public and the media, the couple managed to keep their September 21, 1996 wedding private. The couple wed on Cumberland Island in Georgia, saying their vows by candlelight in a church.

The newly styled Mrs. Bessette Kennedy famously chose a $40,000white slip dressfor the ceremony, designed by her friend Narciso Rodriguez and epitomizing the '90s minimalism she'd helped make famous through heraspirational personal style. It would go on to inspire Meghan Markle's halter-neckreception dressworn following her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.

They faced a series of challenges in the final months of their lives.

Three years after their wedding, JFK Jr. and Bessette Kennedy faced a string of trials that tested their relationship. His cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill, was battling cancer. The paparazzi continued to hound the newlyweds wherever they went. They'd entered marriage counseling in early 1999, a few months before their deaths, per Beller's book. Friends' accounts that they were working on their relationship refute media claims that they were barreling toward a divorce before the fatal plane crash."To say their marriage was on the rocks is just inaccurate," Anthony's wife, Carole Radziwill, toldPeoplein 2017.  "Anthony's impending death was a strain on their marriage, no doubt. But it was a difficult time for all of us. If it weren't, we would be inhuman."

JFK Jr., Bessette Kennedy, and her sister Lauren departed from a New Jersey airport on the evening of July 16, 1999, headed to the wedding of his cousin Rory Kennedy. JFK Jr. piloted the plane. Their aircraft crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Martha's Vineyard, with theNational Transportation Safety Boardconcluding that JFK Jr. experienced spatial disorientation and lost control of the plane (viaThe Washington Post).

Bessette Kennedy's family released a statement of grief recorded inThe New York Times, writing, "Each of these three young people, Lauren Bessette, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr., was the embodiment of love, accomplishment and passion for life. John and Carolyn were true soul mates, and we hope to honor them in death in the simple manner in which they chose to live their lives. We take solace in the thought that together they will comfort Lauren for eternity." The families of the crash's three victims scattered their ashes in the ocean.

Rory, who postponed her wedding following the crash, remembered Bessette Kennedy in a 2017Peopleinterview. "I loved Carolyn," she said. "John was so in love with her and she played a significant role in our family. She was really loved by everybody. She continues to be sorely missed by all of us."

Investigators fan out in search of Nancy Guthrie, analyze discarded glove

Investigators fan out in search of Nancy Guthrie, analyze discarded glove

By Erica Stapleton and Jana Winter

TUCSON, Arizona, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Sheriff's deputies and FBI agents fanned out along highways, vacant lots and remote dwellings of southern Arizona on Wednesday, combing the desert landscape for clues to the fate of U.S. television journalist Savannah Guthrie's abducted elderly ‌mother.

As the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie stretched into its 11th day, a law enforcement official briefed on the case told Reuters that investigators ‌were running forensic tests on a newly discovered black latex glove, looking for fingerprints and possible DNA samples.

The New York Post on Wednesday posted video and photos of FBI personnel taking possession of a glove they had found discarded on a roadside about 1.5 miles from the elder Guthrie's home, where she was presumed kidnapped for ransom.

It was not clear whether the glove collected as evidence matched the pair worn by an armed man in a ski mask seen in video footage authorities released on Tuesday showing the unknown intruder tampering with Guthrie's doorbell camera at about the time police say she was taken.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 when family dropped her off at her home following ‌an evening dinner with them, and relatives reported her missing the following day, authorities said.

PEERING THROUGH THE MASK

As police and forensic analysts on foot scoured a search zone on the outskirts of Tucson seeking more physical evidence, the law enforcement official said the newly released video was undergoing "advanced analytics" in an effort to produce a better glimpse of the masked stranger in the images.

Investigators are "likely attempting to identify facial features/markers through the fabric" of the ski mask, a former FBI agent explained. "This can be done using special mathematical techniques and potentially AI given recent advancements in the field."

Techniques involve measuring the shape of and distance between a person's eyes, ears, mouth, nose, jaw, cheeks and forehead to establish a facial geometry that can be fed through databases in search of a match.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said the ‌elder Guthrie had extremely limited mobility and could not have wandered off far from home unassisted, leading investigators to conclude early on that she had been abducted by force.

THOUSANDS OF TIPS

Traces of blood found on her front porch were confirmed by DNA tests to have come from Guthrie, officials said last week. Law enforcement and family members have described her as being in frail health and in need of daily medication to survive.

At least two purported ransom notes have surfaced since Nancy Guthrie vanished, both of them delivered initially to news media outlets and setting two deadlines that have come and gone. But no proof of life is known to have surfaced ‌following her abduction.

Guthrie, 54, co-anchor of the popular NBC News morning show "Today," has posted several video messages with her brother and sister, appealing to their mother's captors for her return, pleading for the public's help in solving the case, and even asserting a willingness to meet ransom demands.

An apparent break in the case came late on Tuesday when the sheriff's office announced that a "subject" of ‌the investigation had been detained for questioning following a traffic stop in Pima County. But the person taken into custody was later released without being charged.

The sheriff's department also said that its deputies and an FBI forensic team conducted a court-authorized search of a "location" in Rio Rico, Arizona, about 60 miles south of Tucson near the Mexico border. The man who said he was detained told reporters he lived at the address that was searched.

Hundreds of sheriff's ‌deputies and FBI agents have been assigned to the case, receiving nearly 18,000 phone tips since February 1, more than a quarter of those within the last 24 hours, the sheriff's office said on Wednesday.

Democratic-led states sue to stop Trump from withholding $600M in health grants

February 11, 2026
Democratic-led states sue to stop Trump from withholding $600M in health grants

Four Democratic-led states that have become frequent targets of President Donald Trump sued Wednesday to try to block his administration from cutting off hundreds of millions inpublic health grants.

The Department of Health and Human Services told Congress on Monday that it planned to withhold about $600 million in grant funding allocated to the four states: California, Colorado, Illinois and Minnesota. Their attorneys general argue the cuts are backlash for the states' opposition to Trump'simmigration crackdown.

The lawsuit says the cuts violate the Constitution by imposing retroactive conditions on funding and asks a federal court in Illinois to block them from taking effect.

Some grants could be terminated as soon as Thursday, and others in the coming weeks, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said.

Health officials have said the grants — several focused on LGBTQ+ people and communities of color — are "inconsistent with agency priorities" as the Trump administration has shifted away from supporting programs for specific populations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised its priorities in September, dubbing health equity an "ideologically-laden" concept that "has undermined core American values."

Health department officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit.

The administration also plans to pull hundreds of millions in transportation funding from the same four states.

Courts have temporarily blocked similar efforts by the administration to restrict federal funds.

A judge last week ruled that, for now, the administrationcannot cut off billions in child care subsidiesand other social service programs for lower-income people in those four states plus New York.

Several of the largest planned health funding cuts are to programs aimed at preventing the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in Chicago and Los Angeles, with a focus on adolescents, ethnic minorities and gay men.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker called the funding cuts "a slap in the face" to public health leaders who have stepped up as the Trump administration "takes a sledgehammer to public health infrastructure."

The administration is also targeting a $7.2 million grant for the Chicago-based American Medical Association, noting its support for gender-affirming care for minors, which aTrump executive order opposes.

Other grants help the states track disease outbreaks and collect public health data that the CDC also uses.

California faces the largest share of the planned cuts, which Attorney General Rob Bonta said will "irreparably harm" public health in the state.

"President Trump is resorting to a familiar playbook. He is using federal funding to compel states and jurisdictions to follow his agenda," Bonta said. "Those efforts have all previously failed, and we expect that to happen once again."

Ohio State professor placed on leave over alleged assault on cameraman

An Ohio State University professor has been placed on administrative leave pending a campus police investigation into an allegation of assault on an independent journalist.

Videopublished Tuesdayby a local newsletter writer shows Luke Perez, an assistant professor who studies the ethics of war and international religious freedom, in a hallway while a local journalist and filmmaker, whomlocal news outlets identifiedas Mike Newman, holds up a camera and a smartphone.

Shortly after the video starts, Newman steps forward and Perez steps in his way. Perez then suddenly knocks the phone out of Newman's hands and grabs at him. Perez appears to put one of his arms around Newman's head, knocking Newman to the ground.

"I told you not to put that into my face," Perez tells Newman as he stands over him on the ground. Perez then shouts that Newman assaulted him, though the video doesn't show that. Newman didn't respond to a LinkedIn message, and NBC News was unable to find a working phone number for him.

Perez directed a request for comment to the university's media relations office.

"We are aware of the incident, and it is very concerning," Benjamin Johnson, an Ohio State spokesman, said in a statement. Perez has been placed on administrative leave pending a university police investigation.

The incident is an unusual confrontation on a college campus that both conservative and liberal critics online said called into question the university's commitment to free speech, given that the faculty members present are all affiliated with a new academic center focused on "free, open, and rigorous intellectual inquiry." Faculty members have criticized the centerbecause legislators who created itsaid they wanted to combat "leftist ideology" on campus.

The writer who posted the video, DJ Byrnes, explainedin his newsletter The Roosterthat he and Newman had been trying to ask questions of E. Gordon Gee, the former Ohio State president, in the hallway of a campus building Monday. He included an additional video showing Gee answering several of his questions aboutRichard Strauss, a former university physicianwho is accused of sexual abuse by over 200 former Ohio State wrestlers in the 1990swhen Gee was president.

According to Byrnes, Newman wanted to ask Gee questions about Ohio State graduates with student loan debt.

Perez is affiliated with Ohio State's Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture and Society, which the Legislature created last year to foster intellectual diversity. Byrnes, a self-described Ohio political gadfly, said they didn't know who Perez was before that encounter.

Gee, the former chief executive of Brown University, Vanderbilt University and West Virginia University, is a consultant for the Chase Center. Herecently saidcalls to remove Ohio billionaire Les Wexner's name from campus buildings — over Wexner's yearslong association with Jeffrey Epstein — are "cancel culture gone wild."

Byrnes included additional videos in which he tried to continue questioning Gee in an elevator, but another professor, Christopher Green, tried to block him while shouting "you are assaulting me." Green didn't respond to an email and phone calls Wednesday.

Byrnes wrote that he and Newman, whom he referred to by a pseudonym, filed a report with the university's Public Safety Department. The campus police agency hasn't yet released a copy.
