Emmitt Smith's contract holdout was more than three decades ago, but it's still memorable. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn't forgotten about it.

In 1993 Smith was coming off his second straight rushing title and held out, wanting a new contract. The holdout lasted two games into the regular season, and the Cowboys started 0-2. The two sides then came to an agreement on a deal that made Smith the highest paid running back in NFL history (four years and $13.6 million ... contracts have gone up a bit). Smith ended up winning NFL MVP and the Cowboys won a Super Bowl.

Jones remembers that holdout and others in which the Cowboys waited it out, which indicates he isn't going to panic about the Micah Parsons situation.

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

"It took a long time with Emmitt Smith," Jones told Jarrett Bell of USA Today. "Same thing with [Zack] Martin two years ago. [CeeDee] Lamb last year."

It's a theme for the Cowboys. Parsons requested a trade, but Jones probably isn't going to speed up negotiations that much.

Jerry Jones explains Micah Parsons situation

The tone of the pace of negotiations was summed up by a Jones quote over the weekend, after the trade request, in which he advised Cowboys fans: "Don't lose any sleep over it."

Jones is a shrewd businessman and it seems that while the rest of the NFL world and especially Dallas is worried about what happens next with Parsons, the Cowboys owner seems like he's enjoying the standoff.

"This is a negotiation," Jones said, via the team's site. "Does it blow me up? Somebody to say, 'Look, trade me.' That's just not a flare sign for me at all in any way."

[Get more Cowboys news: Dallas team feed]

Jones has reasons to not worry too much. Parsons can request a trade all he wants but that doesn't force the Cowboys into dealing him. Parsons has a year left on his rookie deal and Jones referenced in his interview with USA Today the two franchise tags the team used on DeMarcus Lawrence and Dak Prescott before signing them to long-term deals.

Theoretically, if the Cowboys wanted to dig in, they could use back-to-back franchise tags on Parsons, too, and drag it out until after the 2027 season.

Parsons' leverage is that the Cowboys would be at a significant competitive disadvantage if he sat out games during his holdout. Jones doesn't seem too worried though.

Generally, the Cowboys have gotten deals done. They did with Smith; they got a long-term deal with Dez Bryant done right at the deadline for extending franchise-tagged players; Prescott and Lawrence got long-term deals after franchise tags; Martin and Lamb got their contracts too after some August drama.

People can criticize Jones for waiting, and often paying more, but it's not changing. Jones has argued that doing a deal early has its drawbacks too, and he keeps doubling-down on that approach.

"Let me say this just right," Jones told USA Today. "I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't do it that way. I should be trying to get the most value for the Cowboys. I've seen players I wish we had renegotiated their contracts earlier and I've had several that I was sorry I renegotiated their contract earlier. The idea that if you wait there's more money (spent) forgets that in between that wait, you get to evaluate and you frankly get to see if you're dealing with the same physical elements of it."

So everyone is in a holding pattern. There's more than a month before the Cowboys' first regular-season game. The Cowboys don't seem inclined to entertain trade calls for Parsons. He will continue to hold out as he looks for a deal that will likely make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

And Jones will keep waiting. He has made that clear.

AJLT Fans Have a Theory About How Show Will End HBO

And just like that, it's time to say goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw and the girlies. After three series, it's been confirmed that And Just Like That... will wrap up for good this month, with showrunner Michael Patrick King announcing that the "Sex and the City universe" is coming to an end. RIP.

Despite the (very!) mixed reviews the SATC spin-off has received since it started airing in 2021, fans have understandably been quite cut up about bidding farewell to these iconic characters—more on their reactions in a moment.

That being said, after decades in the SATC universe, it's only natural that viewers are theorizing about how the show will close, and one theory seems to be pretty prominent, especially among Samantha Jones fans.

"And Just Like That needs to end with Samantha waking up and saying 'What a horrible dream!?'" one fan suggested on X, referencing the absence of Kim Cattrall's legendary character.

But for real, And Just Like That should end with Samantha waking up from a three year long coma and going "I just had the worst dream". And then smash to black.

"But for real, And Just Like That should end with Samantha waking up from a three year long coma and going: 'I just had the worst dream'. And then smash to black," another fan agreed, as someone else shared: "It should end with a Samantha scene!! She was the show!!"

Other viewers hope that we'll see the show switch to Samantha's life in London, although, given the wording that the entire SATC "universe" is coming to an end, that might be unrealistic. "It'd be even better if they could pass the baton over to Samantha in London for the last hour of show – we get a tiny glimpse into her wonderful sex life with a younger man, her social life with Black and gay friends, her office fling with an older man coz duh, she trying poly!" one fan suggested, as another wrote, "I'd like a Samantha spin off."

Elsewhere, another viewer pointed to how relieved the actress who played her must be feeling. "Kim Cattrall after seeing this news, realizing no one will ever bother her about playing Samantha Jones again," they posted.

Collier John, Jr. / Library of CongressThe sound that defined summer (1942)

Long before smartphones and video games captured people's attention, there was the unmistakable jingle of the ice cream truck. From the 1920s through the 1980s, these mobile vendors weren't just selling frozen treats; they were creating the soundtrack to American childhood, turning ordinary neighborhoods into wonderlands of anticipation and delight with nothing more than a simple melody and the promise of something sweet.

John Ferrell / Library of CongressThe Great Depression: Sweet relief (1942)

During the 1930s, ice cream trucks offered affordable relief during America's most challenging economic times, when a nickel could buy a small cup of happiness and vendors understood their role went beyond selling ice cream to bringing smiles to people who had little else to celebrate in families facing unprecedented hardships.

John Ferrell / Library of CongressPost-war boom: The Golden Age begins (1942)

The 1940s and 1950s brought prosperity and innovation to the ice cream truck industry, with improved refrigeration technology, sophisticated truck designs, and an explosion of frozen treat varieties that captured the optimism of the era in shiny new trucks with uniformed vendors serving crowds of excited suburban children and adults who had pocket change to spend on the American dream one ice cream at a time.

Collier John, Jr. / Library of CongressThe birth of the jingle (1942)

The 1950s brought a groundbreaking change that would forever define ice cream trucks: the musical advertising systems that played catchy tunes like "Turkey in the Straw."

These melodies could be heard from blocks away, triggering an immediate response in children who learned to recognize their local vendor's unique sound. As soon as they listened to that delightful jingle, they would start asking for money, turning the experience of buying ice cream from a random chance encounter into a much-anticipated event.

PPDW / Library of CongressNeighborhood institution (1918)

By the 1960s, ice cream trucks were a common sight in American neighborhoods, following regular routes and cultivating loyal customers. Vendors got to know their customers by name, remembered their favorite flavors, and would often extend credit to families they trusted. These vendors served as informal community connectors, transforming their truck stops into lively neighborhood hubs. Children would gather to compare their selections, while neighbors shared the latest news, all while enjoying a delightful assortment of treats, from Popsicles to push-up pops.

National Photo Company Collection / Library of CongressSummer jobs and entrepreneurship (1926)

For many young men in the 1960s and 1970s, driving an ice cream truck was more than just a job; it was a rite of passage and their first authentic taste of being an entrepreneur. It took a lot more skills than most people might think, including route planning, managing inventory, providing excellent customer service, and keeping a positive attitude even when their ice cream started to melt. They learned the basics of American business one ice cream cone at a time, guided by entrepreneurs who took pride in keeping their trucks clean and building relationships within their communities.

Russell Lee / Library of CongressThe end of an era (1942)

By the 1980s, neighborhoods were changing, new regulations were coming into play, and consumer habits were shifting, all of which began to reshape the ice cream truck industry. As suburban areas expanded, routes grew longer, safety concerns prompted stricter rules, and convenience stores made frozen treats available all year round. This slowly ended the special magic that ice cream trucks once had during childhood summers.

Rfranca / iStockConclusion

Today, you might still spot modern ice cream trucks cruising through neighborhoods, but these vintage photographs take us back to a simpler time. Back then, the arrival of the ice cream man was the highlight of every summer day. It's more than just a business; it's a reminder of American childhood, where vendors offered much more than just a cold treat. They created lasting memories and fostered community bonds. This tradition turned ordinary streets into enchanting places, with children eagerly rushing toward that perfect summer moment of picking their favorite ice cream treat.

Key Points -

President Trump announced 15% tariffs on Japan last week.

Nintendo responded by warning of a price increase on its Nintendo Switch products Friday.

On Monday, the price change took effect.

These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires ›

Nintendo (OTC: NTDOY) stock jumped in Monday trading, rising 7.1% through 11:20 a.m. ET in response to a press release the Japanese video game company put out just before the weekend began.

Pricing for the company's various Nintendo Switch gaming consoles and related products will change in the United States "based on market conditions," said the company, "effective August 3, 2025." And by "market conditions" it seems the company means President Trump's tariffs on Japanese imports.

What's changing at Nintendo

Nintendo clarified that Nintendo Switch 2 prices and prices for physical and digital Switch and Switch 2 games "will remain unchanged at this time," although the company gave no guarantee that prices won't change in the future in response to U.S. tariff policy on Japanese imports.

What may change are prices for:

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch (OLED Model)

Nintendo Switch Lite

Select Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 accessories

Is this good or bad news for Nintendo?

When we compare current product prices to those from Monday of last week, the effect becomes clear. A Nintendo Switch Lite unit that cost $199.99 a week ago now costs $229.99 (up 15%). The OLED Model, which cost $349.99 last week, now costs $399.99 (up a bit more than 14%). The ordinary Nintendo Switch, which cost $299.99 last week, costs $339.99 today (up 13%).

All these price changes resemble the 15% tariff on Japanese imports announced by President Trump July 31 just a bit too closely for it to be a coincidence. It seems pretty clear that Nintendo is passing the cost of higher tariffs directly to consumers, preserving its profit margin in the process.

This might hurt sales a bit, but so long as profit margins remain intact, investors seem happy today.

American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) stock rose over 20% Monday after President Trump waded into the discussion about the company's viral ad campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney.

"Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, the social media platform he owns. "It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em Sydney!"

The campaign features a play on homophones — "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans" and "Sydney Sweeney has great genes" — that quickly generated controversy around the potential ambiguity of the ad's message.

American Eagle responded to the accusations on Sunday in a post on its Instagram page: "'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans' is and always about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story."

Read more about American Eagle's stock moves and today's market action.

Shares of the retailer have been volatile since the ad campaign was rolled out in late July. Late last month, the stock was lumped in with other meme plays, a trade that has begun to fizzle out over the past week.

Trump's post on Monday also alluded to recent advertising campaigns from companies including Jaguar and Bud Light, which saw both brands embroiled in controversies around messaging derided by critics as "woke."

Last week, Jaguar Land Rover announced its CEO Adrian Mardell would step down from the top job after three decades with the company, attributing the move to Mardell's wish to retire. A successor has not yet been announced.

"The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be," Trump wrote.

- - Tropical trouble: After Dexter, could 'Erin' and 'Fernand' be next?

Doyle Rice, USA TODAY August 5, 2025 at 12:27 AM

As Tropical Storm Dexter races out to sea away from the United States, hurricane forecasters Aug. 4 were watching two other areas of potential concern in the Atlantic, which if they form, could be named Erin and Fernand.

One, a tropical wave that's just recently moved off the coast of Africa, could develop into a named storm in the central Atlantic by later in the week, some forecast models show.

The second is a developing area of low pressure much closer to home, off the Southeast U.S. coast ‒ a system that promises a dreary week of weather for hordes of beachgoers.

"We are now moving into a more active period (of the) Atlantic hurricane season," said Weather Trader meteorologist Ryan Maue in an Aug. 4 email to USA TODAY.

Dexter heads out to sea

"Dexter is already exiting stage right, moving east northeast around 10 to 15 mph," said Houston-based meteorologist Matt Lanza in an Aug. 4 newsletter post. "By the end of the week, Dexter should be post-tropical. Eventually, this will probably end up in the British Isles, either as part of another typical European storm or as a passing disturbance. Either way, it's mostly just a curiosity than anything else."

WPLG-TV hurricane specialist Michael Lowry, in an email to USA TODAY, said that "Dexter, while posing no threat to land, is the opening act for the show the Atlantic's threatening to put on behind it."

In addition to Tropical Storm Dexter, the National Hurricane Center is also monitoring two other areas of tropical concern in the Atlantic (yellow and orange areas.)Out of Africa

Exiting the coast of Africa late on Aug. 3 was a robust tropical wave that models suggest has a good chance of becoming a named storm (likely Erin) and possibly our first hurricane by Aug. 9 to 11 over the central Atlantic, Lowry said.

"In a few days, environmental conditions are forecast to become favorable for gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form by the latter portion of this week as it moves generally west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic," the National Hurricane Center said.

Beyond Aug. 11, forecast models diverge, with the Euro curling the system out to sea and the American GFS continuing a track west-northwestward toward the U.S. East Coast, Lowry reported.

"We won't have much confidence in a forecast for this one till we see if something actually develops and where," said University of Miami meteorologist Andy Hazelton in a post on X.

More: A key sign of hurricane activity has flipped into high gear

Soggy Southeast

The National Hurricane Center has also highlighted an area of concern off the Southeast U.S. coast.

The hurricane center has given the system a 30% chance of development, and models support "something" weak developing and then moving westward, which equals more rainfall for drenched Georgia, Florida, and Carolinas, but the upper-level environment (for full tropical development) is hostile, said Maue.

Later in the first week of August, we're probably going to see a weak area of low pressure develop along a remnant stationary front off the Southeast U.S. coast, Lanza said. "Unlike Dexter, this won't get whisked out to sea. Rather, it looks likely to just kind of sit and spin for a bit."

If it gets a name, which seems unlikely at this point, it might be Fernand, depending on when Erin gets named.

Regardless of whether it gets a name, "this may make for a somewhat dreary week along the Carolina coast," Lanza said. "Rain totals may begin to add up some in this area as well through the week."
