Starbucks customers may soon notice some changes when they go pick up their favorite morning beverage – a redesigned coffeehouse.

The coffee chain announced on Sept. 5 that by the end of 2026, more than 1,000 of its locations will be redesigned, with plans for more in the years to come.

Starbucks said it is bringing the "coffeehouse vibe" back into its stores as part of its Back to Starbucks plan announced by chairman and CEO Brian Niccol when he joined the company a year ago.

"We're refocusing on what has always set Starbucks apart — a welcoming coffeehouse where people gather, and where we serve the finest coffee, handcrafted by our skilled baristas," Niccol said at the time, according to a news release.

Starbucks says the focus of the redesign is to create "physically welcoming spaces that bring back familiar comforts and are intentionally designed."

What will the redesigned coffeehouses look like?

Starbucks said that while all stores won't look the same since there will be a range of designs and coffeehouses sizes, some of the features customers will see include:

Cozier, softer seating

Warmer colors, textures and layers that feel more inviting

A redesigned espresso bar

Redesign for ease of pick up

A local look that will help coffeehouses reflect the "unique character of the communities where they are located"

Starbucks said its intention is to create a "welcoming coffeehouse" that makes it a place where people want to gather.

"Think of it as a living room outside your home," Starbucks said in the news release.

Some coffeehouses have already been refreshed in places like New York City and Southern California, according to Starbucks. Here's a look at some photos of the redesigned coffeehouses.

Starbucks will be doing away with its pickup-only store model in 2026, CEO Brian Niccol announced on an earnings call in July.

Niccol, who has been at the helm since September 2024, said the venture was no longer compatible with the Seattle based coffee chain's plan to get "back to Starbucks."

"We found this format to be overly transactional and lacking the warmth and human connection that defines our brand," Niccol said July 29.

Introduced in New York in 2019, "Starbucks Pick Up" was designed to simplify coffee runs. Customers would (and still can) place mobile orders, pick them up and move on with the day.

Approximately 80 to 90 Starbucks "Pick Up" stores across more than 20 states will be impacted, with some locations facing permanent closure while others will be converted into traditional coffeehouses at a later date, according to Niccol and the chain's website.
