- Former Vice President Kamala Harris' pre-election appearance on *The View *is widely seen as a campaign derailment.
- "I thought it was obvious," Harris said of the differences between her and President Joe Biden.
- Harris drew criticism after telling Sunny Hostin on the air that "not a thing comes to mind" with regard to something she'd do different than Biden.
While many believe that former Vice President Kamala Harris' October 2024 appearance on *The View* dealt a devastating blow to her election campaign against Donald Trump, the politician defended the moment — and partially absolved cohost Sunny Hostin for asking the question that conservatives used as fodder for attack ads.
During the prior, highly publicized live pre-election discussion on the talk show, Harris responded to one of Hostin's questions about differentiating herself from then-President Joe Biden's policies, telling the legal expert that there was "not a thing that comes to mind" that she'd do differently than him.
"I didn't fully appreciate how much people wanted to know there was a difference between me and President Biden," Harris admitted Tuesday during a return appearance on *The View*, in response to Hostin asking about the moment and pointing out that Biden was "deeply unpopular" heading into the election. "I thought it was obvious. I didn't want to offer a difference in a way that would be received or suggested to be a criticism. In the campaign, full time, I was pointing out the differences."
Hostin also read aloud a passage from Harris' new book, *107 Days*, in which the former VP wrote that "everything about my appearance on *The View* was going well until it wasn't," and compared it to pulling "the pin on a hand grenade" that led to an explosion of right-wing backlash.

Responding to speculation that the moment was a tipping point leading to her downfall in the race, Harris said, "No, no," to which panelist Joy Behar quipped, "Good, because Sunny doesn't want to take the blame."
The camera cut to Hostin as her facial expression leaned into Behar's bit.
Still, Harris elaborated to the audience, maintaining that "there were many things" that led to her loss.
"I do believe one of the biggest deciders of the outcome of that election was that the American people were sick of things being so expensive and wanted prices to come down," observed Harris. "This is part of why I wrote the book, which is, let's remember during those *107 Days* [of my campaign] what Donald Trump talked about."

Kamala Harris reflects on 'traumatic' election loss: 'Grieved in a way I have not since my mother died'

She pointed to his priorities being attempts to "bring down costs," and that she believed "there are a lot of people who voted for him believing that's what he would do," though she has yet to see evidence of lower costs herself.
Harris then said she felt there are "certain promises he did keep, which is that he was going to weaponize the Department of Justice" to "fulfill whatever his fragile ego needed" through the government.
The interview ended with Behar asking about Harris' ties to Biden, with Harris telling her that they currently have a "good relationship" and that "it's sincere" on both ends.**
Harris' words came months after Biden, who stepped aside during the 2024 election after mounting pressure from Democrats over his fitness to hold office, told *The View* cohosts in May that he "wasn't surprised" Harris lost.

"Not because I didn't think the vice president was qualified to be president," explained Biden on the air. "She is, she's qualified to be president of the United States of America. I was surprised because they went the sexist route, the whole route. 'This is a woman,' she's this, she's that, really, I've never seen as successful and consistent [of a] campaign undercutting the notion that a woman couldn't lead the country — and a woman of mixed race."
Harris' interview on *The View *also fell one day after the show's parent company, Disney, announced that talk show host Jimmy Kimmel would return to ABC on Tuesday following days of criticism and calls for company boycotts. Outrage grew after Kimmel's suspension over comments he made on *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* about the Sept. 10 assassination of controversial right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk.

The cohosts did not address the development with Harris, after ignoring the issue on the show altogether last week. Moderator Whoopi Goldberg finally introduced a Hot Topic about the subject on Monday, with Ana Navarro thanking viewers for "demanding truth and courage from us" amid the show's silence.
*The View* airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
