Chandra West was set to be a major part of a fledgling police procedural called *CSI *when it debuted on CBS in 2000. But after only two episodes, West was fired. Now, series creator Anthony Zuiker is opening up about the shocking casting decision and its lasting consequences.
"The whole Chandra of it all was challenging because we brought her in for casting for names that shall go unnamed who are making decisions. And this individual said, 'What is this, *Playboy*? Is someone this good looking going to really be a CSI?'" Zuiker recently reflected to TV Insider in an interview commemorating the 25th anniversary of the influential drama's premiere.
Zuiker claimed that the unidentified executive "got their back up pretty bad" about West's casting, and though *CSI*'s original production team fought for their star ("We try to bring her back and we kind of try to dirty her up and not make her as attractive"), it wasn't enough to save her.
"She still got hired, but it was still an ax to grind with who said yes for Chandra. So we brought her back for the pilot. She did a nice job, and then we got the direction, 'Get rid of her.' So that's why I had her killed in 'Cool Change, Episode 2,'" Zuiker remembered.**

Indeed, the close of *CSI*'s pilot episode saw West's Holly Gribbs, a new hire to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's team of crime scene investigators, shot at the scene of a grisly crime, with little hope of survival. In the following episode, CSI supervisor Gil Grissom (William Petersen) taps a San Francisco-based CSI named Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) to join the team, and by episode's end, Gribbs is gone.
Zuiker noted that Gribbs' death and Sidle's recruitment weren't coincidental, but in fact closely related. The Sara character "was born the second Chandra got fired," Zuiker claimed, adding that her "firing allowed us to hire Jorja Fox."**

While West moved on to series like *NYPD Blue*, *The Gates*, and *Played*, Fox stayed put — for the most part.
Fox appeared on all 15 seasons of *CSI*, from 2000 to 2015. But she found herself at the center of a major casting shakeup in 2007, just as season 8 was heading to air. Fox told * *that October that she was quitting the series after both she and costar George Eads were fired, then sloppily rehired amid salary negotiations.
"It came completely out of the blue to be fired, and there were no rumblings of it. I didn't feel like I was on thin ice with anybody. All the actors had asked for a raise. It's traditional if a show is doing well, and because our contracts are so very long," she explained. "I think CBS wanted to make a point at that time, and I think they made it really successfully."**

Fox subsequently quit after being rehired, but didn't stay gone for long. She appeared in a guest role throughout season 9, and rejoined the full series cast through seasons 10-15.
The actress' employment drama was far from the only scuffle of its kind across *CSI*'s 15 seasons (not to mention its legion of spinoffs), but Zuiker did reflect that Fox "got caught up in the politics of casting, and it worked out for us in the end, but she kind of got a raw deal."**
